GaAs phototransducers with 5 to 12 p/n junctions are shown to demonstrate breakthrough performance in optical conversion efficiency ranging from 65% to just under 70%. In particular, for a current-matched 12 junction device we have recorded an efficiency of 66.5% at voc = 14.46v (open circuit voltage) with an approximately 650 suns / 841nm monochromatic source. Our simulations reproduce the Pv characteristics of the physical devices with good (∼ %) accuracy for voc and Isc (short circuit current), which allows us to numerically study the influence of experimental conditions and design factors on device performance. Moreover, our simulations suggest that measured efficiencies are very close to the theoretical limits of the heterostructures under consideration. Our focus in these proceedings is twofold: a) to present an overview of the results of these experiments as well as b) study the factors which limit simulated device performance with the objective of attaining monochromatic conversions efficiencies exceeding 70%. © 2017 IEEE.

In the European Fusion Roadmap, one of the main challenges to be faced is the risk mitigation related to the impossibility of directly extrapolate to DEMO the divertor solution adopted in ITER, due to the very large loads expected. Thus, a satellite experimental facility oriented toward the exploration of robust divertor solutions for power and particles exhaust and to the study of plasma-material interaction scaled to long pulse operation, is currently being designed. Clearly, design requirements for this experiment are quite challenging, to account for the extreme operation conditions, which shall be as representative as possible of the DEMO ones, but in a much smaller device and at lower costs. A feasibility assessment has been carried out for the fully superconducting magnet system of the compact Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility project. The overall magnet system is based on NbTi and Nb3Sn Cable-in-Conduit Conductors, and it adopts some of the most recent developments in this field. It consists of 18 Toroidal Field (TF), 6 Poloidal Field (PF) and 6 Central Solenoid (CS) module coils. In order to cope with the machine requirements such as plasma major and minor radii, magnetic field on plasma axis, plasma current, and inductive flux requirement, the Nb3Sn TF coil is characterized by a peak field of 11.4T on the conductor, operating at 46.3 kA;the Nb3Sn CS modules are characterized by a peak field of about 13 T, with a conductor operating current of 23 kA;the PF coils are wound using NbTi conductors operating at a maximum peak field of 4.0T, with operating currents in the range 21 kA to 25 kA, depending on the PF coil. Profiting of the compact machine size, and thus of relatively short conductor lengths, the TF coil winding pack is conceived as layer wound and made of two distinct sections, a low-and a high-field one, employing different superconductor cross-sections, and electrically connected through an embedded "ENEA-type" joint. Earth Observing instruments that are used to monitor the incoming solar and outgoing longwave radiation from low-Earth orbit, have been a crucial part of studying the Earth's radiation budget during the past three decades. Instruments such as these go through several robust design phases followed by vigorous ground calibration campaigns to set their baseline characterization spectrally, spatially, temporally and radiometrically. The knowledge gained from building and calibrating these instruments has aided in technology advancements as the need for developing more accurate instruments has increased. In order to understand the instrument prelaunch performance, NASA Langley Research Center has partnered with the Thermal Radiation Group at virginia Tech to develop a first-principle, dynamic electro-thermal, numerical model of a scanning radiometer that can be used to enhance the interpretation of an Earth radiation budget-like instrument on orbit. This contribution summarizes the current state of efforts to develop this high-fidelity end-to-end model and while highlighting its possible application to an Earth radiation budget instrument.

The increasing interest on space telescopes for scientific applications leads to implement the manufacturing technology of the most critical element, i.e. the primary mirror: being more suitable a large aperture, it must be lightweight and deployable. The presented topic was originally addressed to a spaceborne DIAL (Differential Absorption LIDAR) mission operating at 935.5 nm for the measurement of water vapour profile in atmosphere, whose results were presented at ICSO 2006 and 2008. Aim of this paper is to present the latest developments on the main issues related to the fabrication of a breadboard, covering two project critical areas identified during the preliminary studies: the design and performances of the long-stroke actuators used to implement the mirror active control and the mirror survivability to launch via Electrostatic Locking (EL) between mirror and backplane. The described work is developed under the ESA/ESTEC contract No. 22321/09/NL/RA. The lightweight mirror is structured as a central sector surrounded by petals, all of them actively controlled to reach the specified shape after initial deployment and then maintained within specs for the entire mission duration. The presented study concerns: a) testing the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) backplane manufacturing and EL techniques, with production of suitable specimens;b) actuator design optimisation;c) design of the deployment mechanism including a high precision latch;d) the fabrication of thin mirrors mock-ups to validate the fabrication procedure for the large shells. The current activity aims to the construction of an optical breadboard capable of demonstrating the achievement of all these coupled critical aspects: optical quality of the thin shell mirror surface, actuators performances and back-plane - EL subsystem functionality. © Copyright SPIE.

Mode-locked lasers are useful for a variety of applications, such as sensing, telecommunication, and surgical instruments. This work focuses on integrated-circuit mode-locked lasers: those that combine multiple optical and electronic functions and are manufactured together on a single chip. While this allows production at high volume and lower cost, the true potential of integration is to open applications for mode-locked laser diodes where solid state lasers cannot fit, either due to size and power consumption constraints, or where small optical or electrical paths are needed for high bandwidth. Unfortunately, most high power and highly stable mode-locked laser diode demonstrations in scientific literature are based on the Fabry-Perot resonator design, with cleaved mirrors, and are unsuitable for use in integrated circuits because of the difficulty of producing integrated Fabry-Perot cavities. We use silicon photonics and heterogeneous integration with III-v gain material to produce the most powerful and lowest noise fully integrated mode-locked laser diode in the 20 GHz frequency range. If low noise and high peak power are required, it is arguably the best performing fully integrated mode-locked laser ever demonstrated. We present the design methodology and experimental pathway to realize a fully integrated mode-locked laser diode. The construction of the device, beginning with the selection of an integration platform, and proceeding through the fabrication process to final optimization, is presented in detail. The dependence of mode-locked laser performance on a wide variety of design parameters is presented. Applications for integrated circuit mode-locked lasers are also discussed, as well as proposed methods for using integration to improve mode-locking performance to beyond the current state of the art.

Using complexity management to address the product-production system has become a substantial competitive factor for manufacturing companies. As the industry is facing various challenges, which are structured in the so called complexity radar, scientific research has been intensified. This paper analyzes the current state and opportunities in the research area of product-production complexity by evaluating a total of 372 publications. The associated evaluation methodology was developed by using statistical methods to allocate publications to the complexity radar's objectives and effects. The identification of addressed areas as well as progress in complexity management research allows for a deduction of further research opportunities. Furthermore, interdependencies between currently pursued research areas are analyzed, targeting at the exploration of multi-objective research topics. The extensive literature review comprehensively reveals the current state of complexity management research as well as further research opportunities. (C) 2017 The Authors. Tungstated zirconia (WO3/ZrO2) is one of the most well studied solid acid catalyst systems and continues to attract the attention of both academia and industry. Understanding and controlling the properties of WO3/ZrO2 catalysts has been a topic of considerable interest over almost the past three decades, with a particular focus on discovering the relationship between catalytic activity and the molecular structure of the surface acid site. Amorphous tungsten oxide (WOx) species on ZrO2 surfaces were previously proposed to be very active for different acidic reactions such as alcohol dehydration and alkane isomerization. Recent developments in electron optical characterization and in situ spectroscopy techniques have allowed researchers to isolate the size, structure, and composition of the most active catalytic species, which are shown to be three-dimensional distorted Zr-WOx clusters (0.8-1.0 nm). Complementary theoretical calculations of the Bronsted acidity of these Zr-WOx clusters have confirmed that they possess the lowest deprotonation energy values. This new insight provides a foundation for the future characterization and theory of acidic supported metal oxide catalytic materials that will, hopefully, lead to the design of more active and selective catalysts. This perspective presents an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the leading models of W03/ ZrO2 solid acid catalysts.

Today, both CCD and CMOS sensors can be envisaged for nearly all visible sensors and instruments designed for space needs. Indeed, detectors built with both technologies allow excellent electro-optics (EO) performances to be reached, the selection of the most adequate device being driven by their functional and technological features and limits. The first part of the paper shortly recalls how far CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) EO performances have been improved these last years. The second part reviews the advantages of CMOS technology for space applications, illustrated by examples of CIS developments performed by EADS Astrium and Supaéro/CIMI for current and short term coming space programs. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. We propose a series of ultra-high-current triple-heterojunction (3HJ) tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) designs based on InGaAs/InP materials. Such materials are Sb- and Al- free for ease of processing and to permit low-trap-density dielectric interfaces. Quantum transport simulations, based on eight-band k.p Hamiltonian, considering effects of strain and electron-phonon scattering, are performed to guide the design and predict the device performance. With v-DD=0.3v and I-OFF=1nA/mu m, the best design can achieve ballistic I-ON of 605 mu A/mu m and, with electron-phonon scattering modeled at 310ev/nm optical deformation constant, a still-high 392 mu A/mu m.

The equatorial visible/infrared Wide Angle viewing System (WAvS) is one of the ITER key diagnostics for machine protection. It has to monitor the Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) by infrared thermography and visible imaging. Foreseen to be installed in 4 equatorial port plugs to maximize the coverage of divertor, first wall, heating antennas and upper strike zone, the WAvS is composed of 15 lines of sight and 15 optical systems transferring the light along several meters from the PFCs through the port plug and interspace up to the detectors located in the port cell. After a conceptual design phase led by ITER Organization, the design is being further developed through a Framework Partnership Agreement signed between the European Domestic Agency, Fusion for Energy, and a consortium gathering CEA, CIEMAT (with INTA as third party) and Bertin Technologies company. First the WAvS measurement specifications are presented. Secondly the description of the current design is given both for the in-vessel system and for the ex-vessel one. The on-going neutronic studies are depicted as well as the cameras and data acquisition system foreseen for the back-end of the diagnostic. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.v. All rights reserved.
