The techniques used for the analysis of thermally induced structural distortions of optical components such as scanning mirrors and telescope optics are outlined. Particular attention is given to the methodology used in the thermal and structural analysis of the GOES scan mirror, the optical analysis using Zernike coefficients, and the optical system performance evaluation. It is pointed out that the use of Zernike coefficients allows an accurate, effective, and simple linkage between thermal/mechanical effects and the opticaldesign.

The task of this research project is to define the extent of applicability of such 3D self-manufacture approach to the production of optical fastenings. The resulting lack of equipment, to be used for demonstration of simple experiments, which would be both competitive in performance and cheap to produce, led to the decision to research opportunities for self-manufacturing.

Most imaging systems today include a mosaic detector array in the focal plane. opticaldesigners of astronomical telescopes typically produce a design that yields a superb on-axis aerial image in the focal plane, and detector effects are included only in the analysis of the final system performance. Aplanatic opticaldesigns (corrected for spherical aberration and coma) are widely considered to be superior to nonaplanatic designs. However, there is little merit in an aplanatic design for wide-field applications because one needs to optimize some field-weighted-average measure of resolution over the desired operational field of view (OFOv). Furthermore, when used with a mosaic detector array in the focal plane, detector effects eliminate the advantage of the aplanatic design even at small field angles. For wide fields of view, the focal plane is frequently despaced to balance field curvature with defocus thus obtaining better overall performance. We will demonstrate that including detector effects in the opticaldesign process results in a different optimal (nonaplanatic) design for each OFOv that is even superior to an optimally despaced aplanatic design. An ultra-fast focal reducer design originally intended for use with spherical primary mirrors (published in opticalengineering, February, 2003), has been adapted for use as a retro-fit for existing telescopes of similar to2m pupil diameter that have aspheric mirrors. The focal reducer has only one aspheric surface, located at the aperture stop, and can provide speeds up to f/0.75 while maintaining a wide field with pixel-limited resolution and a broad spectral passband. Examples have been computed for Ritchie-Chretien, Dall-Kirkham and Cassegrain systems, and for use at the prime focus of mirrors with non-zero conic constants.

A spaceborne telescope has been designed and analyzed for a 2-micron solid state coherent lidar system operating on a satellite. The optical system consists of a large off-axis reflective telescope, a large-aperture diffractive scanner, an image derotator and a lag angle compensator. Due to the orbiting motion of the satellite and scanning, the boresight of the telescope shifts during the round trip travel time of the laser pulses to the target. In a coherent lidar system utilizing optical heterodyne detection, the relative alignment of the received signal with respect to the local oscillator beam is particularly critical. Two compensators have been designed to correct the boresight errors as well as the wavefront errors caused by beam wandering due to the boresight changes. Several design approaches for the compensators have been investigated. The optical and optomechanical design issues for such a system are discussed. The results of optical performance, modeling, and tolerance analysis for the telescope are also presented.

In the past decade, the optical method called moire interferometry has matured rapidly to emerge as an invaluable tool, proved by many industrial and scientific applications. It has been applied to numerous problems in engineering mechanics. It measures in-plane displacement fields with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. This paper reviews current practices of moire interferometry and its extensions. Applications in diverse fields are addressed to demonstrate the wide applicability of the method, especially the recent applications for thermal deformation analyses of microelectronics devices. Speculation on future developments and practices is presented.

Interferometric measurements of real surfaces are combined with computed opticaldesign analyses. To accomplish this, a special software interface driver was developed to accept serial optical Path Difference (OPD) data from a Zygo Mark III interferometer, apply standard algorithms, and convert the measured data into a CODE v readable file. Analysis was conducted on a large aperture developmental optical system containing a fold mirror of eggcrate construction. MTF performance of the entire system was computed as were the contributions of individual surfaces to overall optical quality. Diffraction effects due to the rib structure of the eggcrate mirror were apparent in this analysis, as were the effects of gravity and figure components of the wavefront. This hybrid analysis demonstrates the usefulness of coupling interferometry with an opticaldesign program in the analysis of complex optical systems.

The paper presents a new processing method for design and fabrication of microlens by microfluidic deposition, in which the lenses can be formed on the media with high precise location in the fabrication process. First we may apply physical vaporization deposition (PvD) or spin coating to fabricate a thin film;secondly, the hydrophilic pattern specified by the mask of lenses can be created by photolithography, where the special lens media is made herein. Finally, the liquid solution of lens material is deposited onto the predetermined location of the lens media by the drop-on-demand fluidic actuator;thus, the microlenses are consequently formed after the complete evaporation of solvent in the solution.

The most widely used objectives for the space optics are mirror and catadioptric systems. We have considered several scheme types including the three-mirror schemes both of the Korsch-type and the systems without an intermediate image and compare them from the point of view of packaging conditions, image quality and achievable characteristics. The two-mirror systems with lens correctors are also analyzed. The optical layout and parameters of several variants are presented and the image quality is shown.
