This paper presents a design and a post layout simulation of a high-sensitivity low-power transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for frequency domain near infrared spectroscopy (FD-NIRS). The TIA consumes 340 μW from a 1.2 v DC supply. This low power is necessary for NIRS device portability. The proposed TIA achieves 104.8 dBΩ transimpedance gain, 50 MHz bandwidth and 15.1 nA rms total integrated input noise current for 2 pF off chip photodiode capacitance. The demonstrated TIA is simulated using 130 nm CMOS technology and occupies an area of 0.0012 mm 2 . Post amplifier stage is presented to increase the total gain. The complete NIRS optical receiver achieves 119.5 dBΩ gain, 49.2 MHz bandwidth, 15.4 nA rms total integrated input noise current and consumes 400 μW from a 1.2 v DC supply.

An ultra-small telecentric lens with sub-millimeter thickness is proposed. This lens with 0.2 numerical aperture and high field of view is a good candidate to be used in multi-aperture super resolution imagers. Point spread function and the telecentricity of the lens is extracted numerically and measured experimentally. The ray-optics simulation results show nearly diffraction limited performance for the lens.

A test method that measures spectrally resolved irradiance distribution for a concentrator photovoltaic (CPv) optical system is presented. In conjunction with electrical I-v curves, it is a means to visualize and characterize the effects of chromatic aberration and nonuniform flux profiles under controllable testing conditions. The indoor characterization test bench, METHOD (Measurement of Electrical, Thermal and optical Devices), decouples the temperatures of the primary optical element (POE) and the cell allowing their respective effects on optical and electrical performance to be analysed. In varying the temperature of the POE, the effects on electrical efficiency, focal distance, spectral sensitivity, acceptance angle and multi-junction current matching profiles can be quantified. This work presents the calibration procedures to accurately image the spectral irradiance distribution of a CPv system and a study of system behavior over lens temperature. The ESA Constellation Coordination System (ESA-CCS) is currently being developed under a prototype study. The tool is a web based portal system that securely facilitates the exchange of information between missions flying in a convoy or constellation operated by different control centers. The ESA-CCS disseminates mission critical operational related data between the Mission Operations Centers and in addition to other interested parties. The ESA-CCS provides a centralized information flow between the missions within a constellation providing analyses and visualization tools to determine current and predicted positions of the constellation satellites, their interaction with other satellites in the constellation and provide an overview of the individual satellite health status. Driven by the expansion of missions planning to fly in constellations and formations being proposed composed of spacecraft which were not conceived with constellation flying in their design a need for a widely accessible integrated support facility offering a full suite of tools to cover multiple use cases is foreseen. In order to achieve its goal, the ESA-CCS system interfaces with a wide variety of Mission Operations Centers (MOCs) for exchange of orbit information and other operationally relevant information. These centers may well have their own legacy implementation of external interfaces that is difficult to change or there may now be developments where the standard interfaces of ESA-CCS can be accommodated. However overall, to minimize the impact on flying missions and on-going ground segment design, the ESA-CCS tool is designed to be flexible enough to adopt a wide variety of protocols and file formats for the exchange of information. A sensing system for an angle-scanning optical surface-plasmon-resonance (SPR) based biosensor has been designed with a laser line generator in which a P polarizer is embedded to utilize as an excitation source for producing the surface plasmon wave. In this system, the emitting beam from the laser line generator is controlled to realize the angle-scanning using a variable speed direct current (DC) motor. The light beam reflected from the prism deposited with a 50 nm Au film is then captured using the area CCD array which was controlled by a personal computer (PC) via a universal serial bus (USB) interface. The photoelectric signals from the high speed digital camera (an area CCD array) were converted by a 16 bit A/D converter before it transferred to the PC. One of the advantages of this SPR biosensing platform is greatly demonstrated by the label-free and real-time bio-molecular analysis without moving the area CCD array by following the laser line generator. It also could provide a low-cost surface plasmon resonance platform to improve the detection range in the measurement of bioanalytes. The SPR curve displayed on the PC screen promptly is formed by the effective data from the image on the area CCD array and the sensing responses of the platform to bulk refractive indices were calibrated using various concentrations of ethanol solution. These ethanol concentrations indicated with volumetric fraction of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, respectively, were experimented to validate the performance of the angle-scanning optic SPR biosensing platform. As a result, the SPR sensor was capable to detect a change in the refractive index of the ethanol solution with the relative high linearity at the correlation coefficient of 0.9842. This greatly enhanced detection range is obtained from the position relationship between the laser line generator and the right-angle prism to allow direct quantification of the samples over a wide range of concentrations. This contribution presents a novel design concept of a 24 GHz radio frequency communication module. The integration of optical and electrical components is a particular challenge since the module is miniaturized in order to be integrated into any metallic workpieces. The design concept and the scope of functions of the communication unit acting as a wireless sensor node are discussed. The development of a highly integrated radio frequency circuit and the realization of through glass vias are some main aspects. The central control unit is an ultra-low power microcontroller capable of a flexible connection of sensors. By using an energy harvesting concept consisting of a solar cell with an efficiency of 40% and a supercapacitor the availability of energy is unlimited. Different lighting conditions are investigated in order to evaluate the available power of the solar cell. Furthermore, the power supply is investigated concerning voltage-current characteristics and the resulting operating time of the whole unit for a low ambient light scenario.

Fluorescence imaging is a versatile tool for biological and preclinical studies with steady improvements in performance thanks to instrumentation and probe developments. The sensitive detection and imaging of deep targets in vivo is especially challenging due to the diffusion and absorption of light by the tissues and to the emission of autofluorescence from intrinsic chromophores. Fluorescent inorganic nanoparticles present interesting optical properties that may significantly differ from organic dyes. In this short review, we present recent developments in the design of these nanoprobes and their use for new in vivo fluorescence modalities which provide enhanced imaging capabilities.

In this study, the optical performance of a 90 degree prism working in the mid-wave infrared region with the purpose of carrying a beam of light from one optical system to another in an unconventional way is discussed. First, a group of mirrors is considered as a design alternative to lower the overall cost of the system. However, using mirrors greatly increases the diameter of the beam due to the rays coming from wide field of view angles. Another drawback of mirrors is that having separate mirrors requires precise alignment for the system to work at full performance which is difficult for the given application. However, these alignment issues are not valid for a single piece prism. Therefore, a single piece prism is the preferred option and has been taken into account in this study. Material selection is important, especially in the mid-wave infrared region where the index of refraction differs greatly from material to material. Silicon and Germanium are the materials preferred because of their high index of refraction and transmission characteristics. Aside from optical properties, these materials are also considered in terms of manufacturability. Also, options for the coatings to be applied to reflecting surfaces of the prism are discussed with regard to the transmission loss within the system. In order to have total internal reflection within a prism, coatings must be chosen carefully to handle transmission loss at the reflecting surfaces. All of the system parameters are examined using sequential and non-sequential modes of ZEMAX OpticStudio software.

This paper presents the design and post layout simulation of a high dynamic-rang and low-power transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) for frequency domain near infrared spectroscopy (FD-NIRS). The proposed TIA achieves 108.3 dBΩ gain, 10 MHz bandwidth, and 5.5 nArms integrated input referred noise using a photodiode with 2 pF capacitance. The proposed TIA consumes 260 μW from a 1.2 v supply. The maximum input photocurrent is extended to 9.2 μAp-p with the adopted automatic gain control (AGC). A post amplifier with AGC is introduced after the TIA to increase the gain of the optical receiver and to maintain a good linearity. The complete optical receiver achieves 122 dBΩ gain, 9.9 MHz bandwidth, 5.9 nArms total integrated input noise current, and consumes 1.44 mW from a 1.2 v supply.
