The main parts of the imaging spectrometer for observing ocean color (OCM system) are: the scan subsystem, the pre-position telescope, the dispersion element, and the spectrometer which should be determined according to the science requirements of ocean color observation and the correspondent specifications of the opticaldesign. The authors analyzed the optical systems of the MODIS-T proposed by NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and found some problems in them. Based on this the authors designed a reflection-refraction hybrid optical system by autocollimation grating. The results are better than the improved MODIS-T opticaldesign in some points--the minimal optical MTF value of the design at the Niquist frequency is better than 0.96, the construction is much more compact.

We introduce a closed-form formula to design a spherochromatic collimator singlet lens. The light for three different wavelengths is collimated at the output of the lens. We test the singlet lens using ray-tracing methods and we find satisfactory results for three different wavelengths.

Using the concept of matrix theory for lens design, a triplet lens can be replaced by a singlet lens which has an equivalent system matrix without changing its optical performance. Then, using third order Siedel's first aberration coefficient of the singlet lens is equal to zero, and the focal length and the physical length of the triplet lens are kept constant as constraints, an algebraic technique for optimizing a triplet lens is derived. Results show that this new optimizing technique is more effective than other conventional techniques for optimizing a triplet lens in the case of plane waves.

We present an overview of the pros and cons of using GPUs in opticaldesign software. While GPUs can run multiple calculations in parallel, that parallelization comes with a price. We will discuss the trade-offs that allow GPUs to run up to thousands of cores in parallel and how those trade-offs effect the use of GPUs in opticaldesign software. In particular, we review the use of GPUs in several steps of design calculations, including ray-tracing and computationally expensive steps such as calculating Huygens integrals.

Binary optics is an emerging technology whereby light is directed, combined, or distributed by an optical material having a "stepped" phase structure. We produce computer-generated diffractive elements having high optical efficiency using multiple mask lithography. Perkin-Elmer has an active research and development program supporting binary optics activities from software development to practical technology demonstrations. Standard software tools have been developed to facilitate the design of binary optics from general optical prescriptions. These tools are used to design binary masks for the fabrication of binary optics for diverse applications ranging from simple lenses to general phase transformations. This paper briefly reviews the development of binary optics, discusses the tools supporting the design and fabrication of binary optics, and presents recent applications and demonstrations of binary optics.

The Next Generation Sky Survey (NGSS) Telescope is a spaceborne cryogenic optical telescope with four channels covering the wavelength range 3.5 to 23 microns. The 0.5 m aperture telescope is based on a modified three mirror afocal design, with a scan mirror at the exit pupil compensating for the spacecraft motion. After the scan mirror, the light is spectrally split and focussed by three refractive camera systems onto four detector arrays. The nominal opticaldesign exceeds the requirement of diffraction limited performance at 8 microns wavelength over the 1 degree by 0.5 degree field of regard.

Hybrid optics offer a valuable aberration correction tool for the lens designer. However, careful consideration must be given to the calculation of the optical performance during the design process, and to the practical implementation of the elements if the potential benefits are to be realised in practice. optical performance can be accurately assessed by tracing multiple diffraction orders. It may be particularly important to utilise such a technique if, for example, the image-forming bundles sample a small number of diffractive zones. This situation is examined in detail.

When Extreme Ultraviolet mirror systems having several high-order aspheric surfaces are optimized, the configurations often enter into highly unstable regions of the parameter space. Small changes of system parameters lead then to large changes in ray paths, and therefore optimization algorithms crash because certain assumptions upon which they are based become invalid. We describe a technique that keeps the configuration away from the unstable regions. The central component of our technique is a finite-aberration quantity, the so-called quasi-invariant, which has been originally introduced by H. A. Buchdahl. The quasi-invariant is computed for several rays in the system, and its average change per surface is determined for all surfaces. Small values of these average changes indicate stability. The stabilization technique consists of two steps: First, we obtain a stable initial configuration for subsequent optimization by choosing the system parameters such that the quasi-invariant change per surface is minimal. Then, if the average changes per surfaces of the quasi-invariant remain small during optimization, the configuration is kept in the safe region of the parameter space. This technique is applicable for arbitrary rotationally symmetric optical systems. Examples from the design of aspheric mirror systems for EUv lithography will be given.
