We present theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis of the cause of internal structure of bokeh images often seen in shots taken with camera lenses that incorporate aspheric surfaces. The bokeh structure was shown to closely reflect characteristics of the asphere manufacturing process, and found to be due to light diffraction on the phase grating associated with the aspheric surface. Results of theoretical analysis were confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental photo shots. Bokeh images were found to be more sensitive to residual manufacturing artifacts of aspheric surface than corresponding degradation in lens modulation transfer function for a sharp focused image.

An optical minimum configuration of a laser interferometer for noncooperative scattering objects is investigated. An optimization of the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the homodyne receiver is achieved by beam design. Scattering measurement object surfaces generate a speckle pattern on the detector surface which influences the SNR. Within the whole operating range of the optics, the transmitted light spot on the surface under investigation should therefore be small. The receiving optics should image the light spot onto the detector surface. The detection of a noncooperative object in a distance of 26 m is proven experimentally.

The main parts of the imaging spectrometer for observing ocean color (OCM system) are: the scan subsystem, the pre-position telescope, the dispersion element, and the spectrometer which should be determined according to the science requirements of ocean color observation and the correspondent specifications of the opticaldesign. The authors analyzed the optical systems of the MODIS-T proposed by NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and found some problems in them. Based on this the authors designed a reflection-refraction hybrid optical system by autocollimation grating. The results are better than the improved MODIS-T opticaldesign in some points--the minimal optical MTF value of the design at the Niquist frequency is better than 0.96, the construction is much more compact.

However, there are difficulties in determining material and power of each lens, because achromatism is simultaneously required. In this paper a well-known approach is used for calculation of off-axis three-mirror telescope. It includes usage of conic cross-sections properties, each of the sections forming a stigmatic image. To create a compact optical system, a flat mirror aberration corrector is introduced, which is at later stage transformed into a free-form surface in order to compensate field aberrations. Similarly, one can introduce such a corrector in finalized layout for its further optimization and getting a suitable form, including the conversion of multimirrors axial optical system into decentered one. As an example, off-axial Gregory telescope embodiment is used for infrared waveband region, due to the fact that, unlike the Cassegrain telescope, it provides a real exit pupil, and usage of the mirror corrector brings several advantages. Firstly, this feature may be used to include cold stop or adaptive mirror in the exit pupil, wherein corrector is introduced into a converging beam before the focus of the first mirror. Secondly, when placing corrector in the exit pupil of the optical system it is possible to eliminate high and low order aberrations of center point, which in turn improves optical system f-number, and minimize field aberrations. As another example, off-axial Ritchey-Chretien telescope embodiment is used as a good fit for visible region systems. Analysis and calculation results of optical systems with free-form correctors with surfaces, defined by Power polynomial series are presented in this paper. Advantages of different freeform surfaces usage depends on optical system layouts specifics.
