Scientific Calculations, founded in 1963, is a supplier of software-based design automation products, i. e. , we write, market, and support computer programs. Our first series of products was and is for the design and analysis of optical systems. Our current offering is ACCOS v(TRADEMARK), an acronym for Automatic Correction of Centered optical Systems version v. The restriction to centered optical systems was removed long ago. Through the sixties, the predecessors of ACCOS v(TRADEMARK) were both batch oriented codes. Work was begun on ACCOS v(TRADEMARK) in 1970 with the goal of developing a general purpose interactive code. Work continues today.

current research in the area of robotic control centers around task planning, trajectory planning, and trajectory tracking. While increasing the flexibility of these control subtasks is a task in itself, it is wise to keep in mind the overall control scheme, such that the increased flexibility is realizable. A robotic control hierarchy is proposed. The interdependance of the control modules, and the robot arm itself, are demonstrated. Several known control schemes are shown as subsets of this hierarchy. The capabilities of the higher levels of the control hierarchy are seen as being dependent on the lower levels. This suggests that the developments and refinement of separate modules will lead to an 'intelligent' robot controller design.

In this paper, we discuss the all-fiber approach to current sensing for high voltage applications. We present different sensors, based on the Faraday effect, which allow to perform measurements without any contact or linkage between the fiber and the line. This is obtained by an accurate control of the bending birefringence in the sensing coil and by a proper design of its shape. Using a multimode laser diode and a polarization readout scheme,the typical sensitivity is 1A (rms), with a dynamic range up to three decades and a bandwidth of 10 KHz. These performances are adequate both for steady-state measurement and transient monitoring.

currentdevelopments in thermal imaging in the 8-12 micron waveband are towards improving spatial and radiometric resolution. However, they will not reduce the initial or whole life cost. To significantly reduce costs the overall size must be reduced and significant savings made in three critical areas;detectors, cooling and optics. 3-5 micron quantum detection using a parallel or serial parallel scan is investigated which reduces cost in these areas by using inherently cheaper detectors with thermo electric cooling and low cost optics optimized for diamond machining using a reflecting single field of view telescope.

Stray light analysis has matured in the last ten years into a set of well understood disciplines, some of which are: the measurement and use of scatter data;baffle design;diffraction, system design, and system level analysis, to mention the most significant. System test results, both on the ground and in space, have confirmed the ability of the software analysis to make accurate predictions. The data base on the scattering characteristics of materials has swelled tremendously. The number of facilities making such measurements has also greatly increased. There are still some soft spots in certain areas of technology. Scatter measurements in the vacuum Uv and far IR are still very scant.
