Flashlamp Pumped Laser Technology.

A review of technology related to flashlamp pumping of solid-state lasers used in industry is presented within a theoretical and experimental framework appropriate to a broad range of industrial applications from drilling to heat treating. A general overview of system considerations leads to general lamp performance requirements. These are considered in perspective to current cost analysis considerations and operations research data. Recent developments in flashlamp pumped lasers are discussed and comments on future trends in technology that affect industrial pulsed lasers are presented.

During discussions that took place during a Colloquium on Numerical Methods for Engine-Airframe Integration at the AIAA 22nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting, several basic questions came to light in regard to the following: availability of computers, status of turbulence modeling, numerical methods for complex flows, and applicability of different levels and types of codes to specify flow interactions of interest in integration. The current volume is organized based on the four invited articles that address those basic questions and the revised and edited contributions. This volume is a comprehensive introduction to the current state of developments and the directions for advances in the application of computational methods as a primary tool for performance estimation and design.

A MODEL OF SILICON SOLAR-CELLS FOR CONCENTRATOR PHOTOvOLTAIC AND PHOTOvOLTAIC THERMAL SYSTEM-design

The design of photovoltaic (Pv) and photovoltaic/thermal (Pv/T) solar energy conversion systems employing optical concentration requires simple models of solar cells which nevertheless have sufficient accuracy to be employed in design decisions. Semi-empirical expressions are presented for open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor, and conversion efficiency of silicon solar cells as explicit functions of optical concentration ( C ) and temperature ( T ). In addition similar expressions are given for the solar cell current as a function of C and T and of the operating voltage v , to enable characterization under conditions of nonoptimal power transfer. The agreement of the model with experimental data is shown to be within ⋍ 10% for all parameters. An example of an application of the model to system design is also presented.

Pressure tubes were initially made of Zircaloy-2 but for Pickering Unit 3 and all subsequent power reactors, pressure tubes have been made from Zr-2,5 wt %Nb, The current tubes have a design life of 30 yr and are made by the same extrusion and cold drawing process used to make the Zircaloy-2 tubes, Recent developments have shown that the fabrication route can be modified to change the microstructure and produce tubes that have the same strength, but lower axial elongation, Investigation of other zirconium alloy systems for a high strength alloy resulted in the alloy Excel (Zr-3.5wt % Sn, 0.8wt %Mo, 0.8wt %Nb) being developed for tubes with better in-reactor dimensional stability. Results are promising and long term in-reactor tests are continuing. The relative importance of microstructural and alloying effects on in-reactor properties has yet to be determined.

This paper will provide an overview of AMMRC's current optical materials programs. Projects include the development of reinforced radome materials, high strength multi-mode transparent windows, tunable laser crystals, crystal growth of Nd:YAG by vSOM, hard optical coating materials, epitaxially grown thin film crystals, glasses for laser adsorption, low-cost hermetically sealed optical fibers, and oxynitride glasses. Ongoing work in the laser crystals, multi-mode windows (AlON), and oxynitride glasses areas will be reviewed in some detail.

The approach utilizes two ideas: 1) interpretation of technical design as a mapping in the configuration space of technical characteristics and 2) development of an "intelligent" routine that recognizes global optima. Examples of lens systems designed and used in the development of the general approach are presented, current status of the project is summarized, and plans for the future efforts are indicated. © 1984 SPIE. Progress in the development of low-loss, high bandwidth, single-mode fibres for optical communication purposes has led to increased effort over the past several years into the development of integrated optical devices and systems. Active devices such as modulators, switches, polarisation controllers have been developed in lithium niobate substrates while passive devices such as junctions, power splitters, wavelength demultiplexers have been formed in glass waveguides. Interconnection of devices to form integrated systems poses special problems and two lines of approach are possible: (i) hybrid systems where devices in different materials are linked by fibres or other coupling methods (ii) monolithic systems where all devices are fabricated in a single substrate material such as GaAs or InP. Increasing effort is being directed towards III-v semiconductors for fabrication of lasers, detectors, waveguides and opto-electronic devices with a view to the design of monolithic integrated optic and opto-electronic systems. In addition to the use of integrated optics in communication systems, important applications are now being found in fibre-optic sensor devices.

This paper presents a brief history of the evolution of artificial islands and caisson structures for oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea. Following a brief summary of the oceanographic environment and seafloor geology of the Beaufort, the factors influencing design and construction of structures are discussed with examples from oil industry experience in the north. Next, several case histories of islands and caissons are described. The current planning philosophy for the building of production platforms is also discussed, and finally the areas where new developments are needed are outlined.

SUMMARYThe overall performance of any electron microscope is to a great extent determined by the electron source. For example, the current acceptance of the STEM concept is due to the stimulation provided by field emission sources, which made it possible to image single atoms in the *** field emission source remains the electron source with the highest brightness and the lowest energy spread. As a consequence, considerable research and engineering work has been and is still being conducted in a number of important areas. These areas include: (i) the mechanisms which determine the beam current stability; (ii) the electron‐electron interactions which lead to beam spreading and an increase of the energy spread; (iii) various types of emitters such as bare tungsten tips, oxygen processed tips, zirconium coated tips, carbon emitters, carbon coated tungsten emitters and even solid state emitters; (iv) the lifetime limiting factors, e.g. inclusions, ion bombardment and flashovers effects; (v) different types of optical systems for field emission guns, e.g. choice of magnetic and/or electrostatic lenses at high voltage potential in UHv systems, and special magnetic lenses just below the anode; (vi) field emission guns operating at higher kv's, up to 1·6 *** analytical work in the smallest possible volumes is a growing area of scientific interest, the demand for field emission sources which are reliable, easy to operate and stable will contin
