CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) aims to reduce the concentration of carbon in our atmosphere. The International Energy Agency predicts that CCS will need to climb from the current injection of 40MtCO2/year to 1.2GtCO2/year by 2030 for a 2050 Net-Zero Scenario. Fast and accurate simulations are required to plan CCS developments and reduce operational risks. Existing commercial simulators do not suffice: the impact of multiple coupled physical phenomena, the century timescale, and basin-sized models in CCS operations force us to completely take apart and revisit the numerical backbone of subsurface simulation and to build reservoir simulation capabilities tailored to the physical complexity of CCS. Because of the numerical challenges in multiphysics coupled systems, this tool needs to be optimized for mathematical performance and computational portability on advanced computing architectures. Finally, this tool targets applications where private entities, universities, and regulators must work together. It must be accessible to simple computer systems, be open-source, and fully auditable. Here, we present GEOS, an open-source, multiphysics, exascale subsurface simulator. Since 2018, GEOS has been developed as a partnership between a US National Laboratory, university, and private institutions. GEOS solves multiphysics simulations with fully coupled geomechanics and flow using a combination of finite volume and finite element discretization. GEOS leverages scalable linear solvers such as Hypre and preconditioners such as Multigrid reduction. It uses open-source portability layers RAJA and CHAI, guaranteeing scalability on various high-performance computing systems. GEOS is coded in C++17. Finally, because it is open-source and freely accessible, GEOS has been extended by other institutions for other multiphysics problems such as thermal flow or wave propagation. Computational Pathology (CPath) is an interdisciplinary science that augments developments of computational approaches to analyze and model medical histopathology images. The main objective for CPath is to develop infrastructure and workflows of digital diagnostics as an assistive CAD system for clinical pathology, facilitating transformational changes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer that are mainly address by CPath tools. With evergrowing developments in deep learning and computer vision algorithms, and the ease of the data flow from digital pathology, currently CPath is witnessing a paradigm shift. Despite the sheer volume of engineering and scientific works being introduced for cancer image analysis, there is still a considerable gap of adopting and integrating these algorithms in clinical practice. This raises a significant question regarding the direction and trends that are undertaken in CPath. In this article we provide a comprehensive review of more than 700 papers to address the challenges faced in problem design all-the-way to the application and implementation viewpoints. We have catalogued each paper into a model-card by examining the key works and challenges faced to layout the current landscape in CPath. We hope this helps the community to locate relevant works and facilitate understanding of the field's future directions. In a nutshell, we oversee the CPath developments in cycle of stages which are required to be cohesively linked together to address the challenges associated with such multidisciplinary science. We overview this cycle from different perspectives of data-centric, model-centric, and application-centric problems. We finally sketch remaining challenges and provide directions for future technical developments and clinical integration of CPath. Implantable medical devices (IMD) with stimulation system-on-chip (SoC) have been essential techniques for disease treatments and rehabilitations. As neuromuscular stimulation injects a large amount of stimulus energy into the body, its energy efficiency and safety should be carefully considered, which otherwise damages cellular tissues. Conventional current stimulation suffers from large power losses across current sources. Even adopting the adaptive supply voltage, the stimulator efficiency is still limited below 60% [1]. The switched capacitor stimulation (SCS) system charges the capacitor and transfer its charges to the tissue, achieving stimulator efficiency up to 84% [2]-[4]. However, previous SCS systems only operate with AC input voltages directly from wireless power, which can be interrupted in loosely-coupled inductive links. To take advantages of using a rechargeable battery or a supercapacitor for reliable IMD operation, the SCS system that can efficiently operate with both DC and AC inputs is required. Also, more aggressive techniques to further improve stimulator efficiency and efficacy are highly needed. © 2022 IEEE.

Development of Advanced Cfd-Based Model for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer

Recently, various computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based water electrolysis models have been developed to analyze the internal phenomena of water electrolysis cells for green hydrogen production. Anion exchange membrane water (AEM) electrolysis is a promising and inexpensive solution to address hydrogen production and environmental issues. AEM electrolysis requires high fidelity to improve its durability, reliability, and efficiency, because of its low technical proficiency. In this study, a CFD-based model for AEM electrolysis was developed to analyze the three-dimensional and two-phase phenomena inside the cell. By combining electrochemical models with mass, momentum, and heat transfer models the temperature, pressure, and gas generation profiles inside the cell were studied. Parameters were estimation using the experimental data from a high-accuracy model. The results showed that the applied voltage, which determined the exothermic/endothermic mode, had a significant effect on the water electrolysis performance. The current density and activity of the gas generation reaction increased as the voltage increased. Specifically, in the exothermic mode, with voltages higher than the thermo-neutral voltage (1.48 v), the amount of hydrogen generated (28.15 and 32.75 mol/m3 at 1.7 and 2.0 v, respectively) was higher than that in the endothermic mode (11.92 mol/m3 at 1.45 v). However, the increased gas generation caused a rapid increase in the temperature and pressure drop inside the cell, which adversely affected the durability. The cell design also had a significant effect. The model developed in this study can be used in experiments of various scales to optimize serpentine designs and commercial AEM electrolysis stack developments. © 2023, The Authors. The comparator is a crucial component of an Analog-to-Digital Converter(ADC). In this work, we developed a power-efficient Time-Domain Comparator(TDC) for high-speed Data Converters. This circuit minimizes static power dissipation by using the Clock(CLK) to control the current-starved type inverter. The circuit operates on the principle of voltage-to-Time Conversion. The comparator effectively converts the analog input voltage into a time delay, creating a phase difference between the input and reference signals. When the input voltage(vIN) is higher than the reference voltage(vREF), the TDC produces a logic low at the output. If the input voltage(vIN) is lower than the reference voltage(vREF), the TDC produces a logic high at the output. The circuit is designed to operate at a speed of 1GHz with a supply voltage of 1v. It consumes 28uW of power and provides a FOM(figure of merit) of 28.03fJ/Conversion. The dead zone voltage measures 19mv with an average delay of 81pS. This circuit was designed using TSMC 12FF and simulated using Cadence virtuoso.

The heterogeneous integration of III-v semiconductors (III-vs) with the Si platform allows to merge photon sources with Si electronics while enabling the use of micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) mature processing techniques. The inherent insufficient quality of III-vs' native and thermal oxides make imperative the use of deposited interfacial oxide layers for bonding full wafers [1]. The traditional method of choice to overcome that problem is plasma-enhaced chemical vapor deposition due to its low deposition temperature, which prevents the dissociation of III-vs [1]. Here, we present further developments on a novel technique [2], greatly enhancing its Si platform compatibility. As a result, the transfer of top cladded InGaP waveguides (WGs) to a standard Si wafer with wet-thermal oxide thickness of 4μm has been experimentally demonstrated. Consequently, double inverse-tapered WGs can be realized enhancing the in/out-coupling while offering unprecedented freedom in the target substrate design constrains due to the well-known Bosch Si etching process. The surface optical nonlinearity of the transferred WGs has been used for modal phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) [3].

Natural Language Processing for Requirements Formalization: How to Derive New Approaches?

It is a long-standing desire of industry and research to automate the software development and testing process as much as possible. In this process, requirements engineering (RE) plays a fundamental role for all other steps that build on it. Model-based design and testing methods have been developed to handle the growing complexity and variability of software systems. However, major effort is still required to create specification models from a large set of functional requirements provided in natural language. Numerous approaches based on natural language processing (NLP) have been proposed in the literature to generate requirements models using mainly syntactic properties. Recent advances in NLP show that semantic quantities can also be identified and used to provide better assistance in the requirements formalization process. In this work, we present and discuss principal ideas and state-of-the-art methodologies from the field of NLP in order to guide the readers on how to create a set of rules and methods for the semi-automated formalization of requirements according to their specific use case and needs. We discuss two different approaches in detail and highlight the iterative development of rule sets. The requirements models are represented in a human- and machine-readable format in the form of pseudocode. The presented methods are demonstrated on two industrial use cases from the automotive and railway domains. It shows that using current pre-trained NLP models requires less effort to create a set of rules and can be easily adapted to specific use cases and domains. An Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode Pixel Circuit Featuring Mobility Compensation for Portable Applications

A 6T1C pixel circuit based on low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology for portable active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display applications is proposed in this paper. For superior high-end portable applications including 4K high resolution and high PPI (pixels per inch), the proposed pixel circuit employs a single storage capacitor and signal sharing switch-control design and provides low-voltage driving and immunity to the IR-drop issue and OLED degradation. Furthermore, the threshold voltage and mobility-compensating capabilities are improved by both compensation mechanisms, which are based on a negative feedback system, and mobility-related compensation parameters. Simulation results reveal that threshold voltage variations of ±0.33 v in the driving thin-film transistors can be well sensed and compensated while the maximum OLED current shift is 4.25%. The maximum variation in OLED currents within all gray levels is only 1.05% with mobility variations of ±30%. As a result, the proposed 6T1C pixel circuit is a good candidate for portable AMOLED display usage. © 2023 by the authors.

Free Space optical (FSO) communication is a wireless method that sends data via air using light. This paper describes the integration of a FSO communication system that is powered by solar energy. The transmitter and reception ends of the experimental setup are composed of an Arduino Uno board, a laser, and a solar panel, respectively. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the viability and efficiency of an FSO communication system that uses a laser and a solar panel. In the proposed FSO communication system, the microcontroller modulates and demodulates the data transmitted over the light beam and manages the laser and solar panel. Using an Arduino and a solar panel simplifies the system's design, lowers costs, and consumes less energy. According to test results, the system can reliably transmit data up to a distance of 10 meters with low bit error rates (BER). The proposed system is an attractive alternative to current FSO communication methods, which can be costly and cumbersome due to their complexity. The results of the experiments show that the proposed system can achieve dependable communication over short to medium distances, offering a promising wireless communication option in situations where conventional communication technologies are not practical. This paper demonstrates the implementation of an FSO communication system using a laser and solar panel, as well as its viability, effectiveness, and some of the potential industries it might be utilized in, such as healthcare, transportation, and telecommunications.
