The correction of phase aberrations in optical systems using an adaptive liquid crystal phase screen having 64 X 64 pixels is considered. These adaptive components have advantages over deformable mirror systems in that liquid crystal technology is relatively inexpensive and large pixelation densities can be achieved. In particular we address the application of these devices to astronomical adaptive optics. A simulator of the phase correction plate at work using time changing distorted wave fronts is described. Preliminary measurements of the optical flatness and response times of the prototype device are discussed.

An ultra-fast focal reducer design originally intended for use with spherical primary mirrors (published in optical engineering, February, 2003), has been adapted for use as a retro-fit for existing telescopes of similar to2m pupil diameter that have aspheric mirrors. The focal reducer has only one aspheric surface, located at the aperture stop, and can provide speeds up to f/0.75 while maintaining a wide field with pixel-limited resolution and a broad spectral passband. Examples have been computed for Ritchie-Chretien, Dall-Kirkham and Cassegrain systems, and for use at the prime focus of mirrors with non-zero conic constants.

Recent advances in DNA sequencing techniques require the development of high NA immersion microscope systems with large field-of-view, increased resolution and very tight distortion correction. This paper discusses the optical design and tolerance analysis of a NA 1.0 immersion microscope system with a field of view over 1 mm, which is to be used for four-color fluorescence spectroscopy. The microscope system includes an immersion objective lens and four tube lenses, and is corrected for a wide wavelength range from 490 nm to 712 nm. We will discuss critical aspects of designing this kind of optical system, including special glass selection required for chromatic correction.

Reliable fabrication and assembly of high-quality electro-optical imaging systems is a critical challenge facing electro-optical imaging system manufacturers. optical compensation is one standard approach for minimizing the effects of errors introduced during the manufacture and construction of the optical subsystems. We describe how digital image processing should be considered as a form of compensation when evaluating a complete imaging system. We describe a novel method for digital-optical compensation which jointly adjusts both optical parameters and image processing parameters to maximize end-to-end imaging performance. We verify the superiority of this joint compensation strategy over the traditional sequential compensation through several example imaging systems.

A spaceborne telescope has been designed and analyzed for a 2-micron solid state coherent lidar system operating on a satellite. The optical system consists of a large off-axis reflective telescope, a large-aperture diffractive scanner, an image derotator and a lag angle compensator. Due to the orbiting motion of the satellite and scanning, the boresight of the telescope shifts during the round trip travel time of the laser pulses to the target. In a coherent lidar system utilizing optical heterodyne detection, the relative alignment of the received signal with respect to the local oscillator beam is particularly critical. Two compensators have been designed to correct the boresight errors as well as the wavefront errors caused by beam wandering due to the boresight changes. Several design approaches for the compensators have been investigated. The optical and optomechanical design issues for such a system are discussed. The results of optical performance, modeling, and tolerance analysis for the telescope are also presented.

Our study presents recent progress in modelling and performing lens optical design with metasurfaces. We developed semi-analytical models that recover the output phase, polarization, dispersion and group delay of various nanostructures. This enables the mixing of different nanostructures to obtain a target dispersion profile an interesting application of the model. These models can readily be implemented within optical design software such as Zemax and use the built-in optimization of optical design processes while avoiding time-consuming electrodynamics computation. We also introduce the metasurfaces to the analytical lens design framework. This enables us to analytically compute the phase profile of freeform metasurface doublet concerning particular ray conditions such as the Abbe Sine condition as we presented here.

We describe the features of the optical system for Terrestrial Planet Finder, a space-based, cryogenic (35 K) interferometer for direct detection of Earth-type planets around nearby stars. Destructive interference in a stellar interferometer suppresses stellar glare by a factor of several thousand or more, and phase chopping distinguishes planet light from symmetric backgrounds. The mid-infrared (7-20 mu m) is favorable for detecting planetary emission relative to that from the star, and this spectral region also offers important molecular signatures indicative of key atmospheric gases.

Thus, optical designers need account for gradient dispersion as well as gradient index. A dispersion model for the material must be readily available and optical design programs must be capable of defining and maintaining this relationship before and during optimization, simplifying user input and confining the material to walk a well defined path on the glass map. Thinking in terms of lines on the glass map for arbitrary glass families yields a simple dispersion model based on least squares fitting of Buchdahl coefficients. This paper introduces the concept of glass lines and outlines a technique to construct a dispersion model for any contiguous family of gradient refractive material.
