The characteristics of a new twin-track absolute position optical encoder are presented. One track containing a pseudorandom code and the second a periodic pattern are synchronously engraved on a glass slab. The optical reading head design composed of a LED, a gradient index lens and a linear CCD array, with simple intensity-based signal processing to read the code pattern is described in detail. This design is combined with a standard Moire method to enhance resolution. Performance enhancement of the optical reading head is studied in terms of track illumination versus code density, detector geometry versus the lens point-spread function (Airy disk);and reduction of extrinsic spatial noise by the application of thick films. Each parameter was considered in terms of the optimal field of view and depth of field of the system. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

We discuss the requirements on design and production regarding geometric and chromatic aberrations for objectives used in 4Pi confocal microscopy. We show that even the selection of a category 1/1 glass will not automatically assure that these requirements are met. due to residual variations in the Abbe number nu within the manufacturers tolerances. Consequently, the optical design has to take into consideration the possibility of balancing chromatic aberrations by varying selected air spacings in the final assembly of each individual objective. We also demonstrate. that for analyzing the influence of aberrations on the intensity distribution along the optical axis. a scalar diffraction theory is still applicable and very useful.

Bio-inspired optical design can be described as a conscious decision in the design process to take inspiration from physical adaptation that were brought up by natural selection. The usual goal is to introduce non-conventional techniques or material in order to achieve better performance or novel applications. However, when the target is to imitate closely the form-factor, appearance and optical properties of a biological system, new requirements are added to the design process and new problems arises. In this paper, we will expose the design of an optical system that draws most requirements from both the optical properties and the form-factor of the human eye. However, contrary to human eye models, the main requirements for this project is to make a realistic design which can be assembled as a prototype. The design process will be laid out, by firstly introducing system requirements and various performance targets that comes from the bio-inspired design. The constraints associated with using entrance pupil's appearance as a requirement will be presented. This paper will also specifically be looking at distortion as a solution for modulating resolution throughout the field of view and as a tool to aid in those novel problems.

Saddle-point construction (SPC) is a new method to insert lenses into an existing design. With SPC, by inserting and extracting, lenses new system shapes can be obtained very rapidly, and we believe that, if added to the optical designer's arsenal, this new tool can significantly increase design productivity in certain situations. Despite the fact that the theory behind SPC contains mathematical concepts that are still unfamiliar to many optical designers, the practical implementation of the method is actually very easy and the method can be fully integrated with all other traditional design tools. In this work we will illustrate the use of SPC with examples that are very simple and illustrate the essence of the method. The method can be used essentially in the same way even for very complex systems with a large number of variables, in situations where other methods for obtaining new system shapes do not work so well.

Understanding the structure of the design space in optical system optimization is difficult, because common human intuition fails when it encounters the challenge of high dimensionality, resulting from the many optimization parameters of lens systems. However, a deep mathematical idea, that critical points structure the properties of the space around them, is fruitful in lens design as well. Here we discuss simple systems, triplets with curvatures as variables, for which the design space is still simple enough to be studied in detail, but complex enough to be non-trivial. A one-to-one correspondence between the possible design shapes and the critical points resulting from a simplified model based on third-order spherical aberration within the framework of thin-lens theory could lead in the future to a new way to determine good starting points for subsequent local optimization.

This paper presents a methodology for designing an athermalised dual field of view zoom lens in long wave infrared (8 mu m - 12 mu m) spectral band by using the benefits of paraxial optics. By using this design methodology the optical designer can develop many types of complex optical systems in a straightforward way. The key feature of this design methodology relies on utilization of paraxial optics for defining the initial positions of the optical elements. The optical design is based on moving a single lens for changing the optical system's FOV thereby reducing the number of moving parts and simplifying the assembly procedure of the system. The optical design begins with optimization process using paraxial optics. Then the optical design using paraxial optics is used as a template for designing the final optical system by lens material selection for compensating the shift in system's focus due to thermal effects and lens thickness tuning.

In Free Gyroscopic Stabilized Seekers, the Primary Minor has the multiple functions of a magnetic rotor, the primary rotating mass and the primary reflector for the optical train. The introduction of rare-earth magnetic alloys to this class of seeker has provided increased flexibility in materials selection, opto-mechanical design and cost of manufacture. Along with superior magnetic properties, the rare-earth alloy Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) comes with the undesirable properties of anisotropic CTE, high susceptibility to corrosion and manufacturing challenges. This paper discusses the opto-mechanical design, structural and optical modeling and analysis of a primary mirror assembly utilizing an NdFeB insert with centrifugal, linear acceleration and thermal loading as well as the optical test results, qualification testing of long-term figure stability and validation of the mechanical/magnetic/optical design model.

In this research, an optical integrated module including a liquid-filled lens, a flexible sensor membrane and a self-adjusted optical compensation component was designed. We studied the optical relationship (which is called compensation function) between the liquid-filled lens and the sensor membrane to make the system has good optical characters. According to compensation function, this module compensates the optical character between lens and sensor membrane to obtain a clear image by adjusting the internal pressure and volume of the liquid in the liquid filled optical system. For a single lens optical system, the curvy sensor membrane has better performance than flat type sensor in off optical axis due to Petzval surface is curved. An optical experiment was set up to measure the performance of the module to prove the idea, and the results show that the module achieves the desired effect.

Nowadays, the development of the space apparatus with high optical characteristics still stays the important task. The simplest systems which can provide the required characteristics for remote monitoring from the space are the three-mirror systems. It can be shown that in many cases, classical three-mirror systems have critical value of obscuration that leads to decreasing of resolution. Using off-axis field of view in the systems provides the way to avoid the obscuration influence. We present a technique for designing the three-mirror telescope objectives based on the systems with axial symmetry with an off-axis field of view.
