Eyepieces are a part of visual optical systems. Because of their wide field of view and long eye-relief, it is difficult to further improve the existing eyepieces using all-refractive surfaces. Since diffractive elements demonstrate unique characteristics: negative dispersion and non-field curvature, the eyepiece design can be improved by using refractive-diffractive hybrid surfaces. In this paper, several design examples using refractive-diffractive hybrid surfaces to design moderate field of view (FOV) eyepieces were studied. Firstly, a design example using a diffractive surface to replace the negative piece in the cement doublet of a conventional Kellner type eyepiece is presented. Then a design example is given by employing two diffractive elements to replace the negative elements used in the conventional symmetrical eyepiece. For the above examples the eyepiece aberration correction techniques were also analyzed.

We propose a novel method to correct the spherical and coma aberration using a hybrid element (refractive-diffractive). The refractive surface is used to correct the coma, we obtain this condition curving the second principal plane and centred it on the axial point image. The diffractive element is used to correct the spherical aberration using an exact ray trace and the diffractive coefficients as variables. The optimization routine is no required. This method can be used for any conjugates position.

The fluorescence of optical glasses is a property that needs to be taken into account in optical designs for life science applications. Many optical glasses from SCHOTT show a very low intrinsic or auto-fluorescence. The fluorescence depends mainly on the applied excitation wavelength and the optical glass type. The fluorescence of optical glasses is usually defined as the quotient of the integral of the emission spectrum with the integral of the emission spectrum of a reference glass. This definition does not give any information about the actual quantum efficiency of the fluorescence. In this presentation recent data on the integral fluorescence of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented. Additionally, first measurements of the quantum efficiency of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented and compared to the standard method.

A segmented array of mirrors was designed for a solar concentrator test stand at MSFC for firing solar thermal propulsion engines. The 144 mirrors each have a spherical surface to approximate a parabolic concentrator when combined into the entire 17-foot diameter array. The mirror segments are aluminum hexagons that had the surface diamond turned and quartz coated. The array focuses sunlight reflected from a heliostat to a 4 inch diameter spot containing 8 kilowatts of power at the 15 foot focal point. The derivation of the surface figure for the respective mirror elements is shown. The alignment process of the array is discussed and test results of the system's performance are given.

Non-imaging integrators which can be used for laser beam homogenization in materials processing with excimer laser radiation are analysed with regards to geometrical and statistical optics. A model for the transversal degree of coherence of the laser radiation is presented in order to estimate the performance of the integrating devices for the partially coherent excimer laser radiation. This is necessary for a more relevant design of those elements than a design by geometric optical means only. The concept of non-imaging integrators is enhanced by separating the multifaceted element from the focusing lens. This separation provides more flexibility in the processing distance of the optical system. A further enhancement is the combination of such a system with an imaging lens in order to create a system which produces a top hat fluence distribution with variable size for materials processing applications.

A fast (F/1.55) and wide-angle refractive camera objective has been developed to work with a large-size CCD on the focal plane of the spectrograph of Mont Megantique telescope for large spectral coverage from UV to viS and up to NIR. The novel camera objective has been designed and optimized with three different glass combinations in order to have higher throughputs for large spectral coverage, especially in UV region. The tolerance analysis of the camera objective is given in the paper. The final opto-mechanical design of the objective is discussed with the consideration of the manufacturing tolerance in the optical and mechanical parts, as given in this paper. The used components have been minimized to reduce the light inherent lost. The optical testing results displayed the good optical performance of the camera with the required resolution for the whole FOV, as predicted by the optical simulation and computation. The broadband AR coating, enhanced on UV region, have been used on each surface of the lenses in the optical system.

Measuring large curvature radii of convex surfaces with high precision is a challenge because the spherometer's focus must be positioned at the apex of the surface and at the center of curvature of the surface by moving the surface or the spherometer. If the radius of curvature is larger than the back focus of spherometer, then measurement is not possible. In this work, we propose to use the FOCOIVA system1 to move the focus of the spherometer in longitudinal way without modifying the f number by moving two lenses inside it, with this mechanism it is possible to measure radii of curvature of several meters in length. The curves of movement of the lenses and the optical parameters of the lenses that compose the spherometer are presented.

Freeform technology is one of the most promising solutions for enhancing the capability of aberration correction and improving performance of optical systems. Aiming to demonstrate the freedom and flexibility of optical system design, several challenging design examples using freeform surface are presented, including two wide-angle camera lenses adopting even and odd pedal polynomial formulations for symmetric optical surface description, and an anamorphic cinema lens employing non-rotationally symmetric surfaces for capturing a wider aspect ratio and offering a 1.33 x squeeze factor on a 4:3 sensor size. Methods and constraints for designing and optimizing the optical systems are discussed. The optical performances of these design examples are analyzed and the results verify the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed formulations and design strategies in the field of freeform imaging optical design.

Automated computer-aided procedure for component selection, optical design, and optimization was developed and used to produce prototype ocular optics of a head-mounted display for biomedical imaging, with the field of view and resolution approaching those of normal human vision. The new display has the potential to dramatically increase the amount and fidelity of real-time visual information presented to the user. The selected approach was based on a tiled configuration and "optically stitched" virtual image, resulting in seamless imagery generated by multiple micro-displays. Several optical configurations were studied in the design stage, to arrive at the optimal optical layout. The automated procedure provided for extensive search of the best candidate stock components out of thousands of candidate lenses offered by different vendors. At each iteration, the candidate lens was "digitally inserted" in the optical layout, its position was optimized, and the achieved merit function characterizing the quality of the stitched image was stored, along with the design prescription. A few best designs were then closely evaluated in a traditional "manual" procedure. The design effort was followed by experimental demonstration and tests of a limited prototype optical system.

A refractive astigmatic lens is employed to generate a focus error signal (FES) for servo control in general optical pickup. In this paper, a diffractive optical element (DOE) is designed to implement optical functions of astigmatic focusing for a MEMS-based miniature optical pickup at 650nm wavelength. We present a diffractive astigmatic lens with its internal zones and external zones quantized into four, two phase levels, respectively based on fabrication consideration. The optical simulation based on scalar diffraction theory shows the efficiency of this quantized lens for astigmatic focusing and a comparison of the FES in the optical pickup system has been plotted.
