optical system design is undergoing a transformational change with the increases in computational horsepower, cutting-edge algorithmic developments, and the advent of new nanofabrication technologies. Among the most exciting advances in recent memory are optical metasurfaces, which are patterned surfaces commonly realized through nanofabrication that can imbue optical engineers with expanded degrees of design freedom due to their ability to exploit the generalized form of Snell's law. Through intelligent optimization and design, metasurfaces can be constructed which achieve arbitrary chromatic dispersion behaviors and unprecedented control over polarization that simply cannot be realized with conventional optical elements. However, designing high-performance metasurfaces requires the use of full-wave simulation tools and numerical optimization techniques which necessitate considerable computational resources. Moreover, while optical metasurfaces are moving towards millimeter and centimeter scale diameter lenses with advances in nanofabrication techniques, it is computationally infeasible to employ full-wave simulation tools directly to model optical systems that use such large size elements. Nevertheless, the size, weight, and power (SWaP) advantages afforded by optical metasurfaces make them a compelling choice for designers to consider in a number of applications, which are currently limited by bulky conventional optical solutions. Therefore, techniques that can rapidly model metasurfaces in conjunction with conventional optical elements such as lenses, mirrors, and prisms are highly desirable. In this presentation, we highlight a toolkit of custom solvers, design procedures, and powerful optimization algorithms that simplify and accelerate the development of hybrid optical systems with arbitrary combinations of conventional and metasurface elements.

Miniature optics are used in many applications and particularly in consumer optics for such products as webcams, mobile phones, automotive components, endoscopes, tablets, and many other connected devices. Mobile phone cameras are probably the ones that have driven the race for shorter TTL over the past 10 years. Ten years ago, cell phone cameras were composed of 3-4 optical plastic elements within one camera lens;today it takes more than 6 optical elements to obtain mega pixel resolution. But it is still not enough. The market has an insatiable appetite for greater optical performance. Consequently, the lens system has become more complex and now may require more optical elements with more complex optical functions. In this context, can the metasurface lens play a role? In this paper, we will try to address this question and discuss how metasurfaces promise to become a game changer in the consumer electronics market.

An achromatic component shares a common focus at two wavelengths and is a commonly used device in optical assemblies. This work explores the cost versus performance tradeoff for several types of achromatic lenses: conventional doublets with homogenous glass elements, hybrid doublets with a diffractive surface, axial GRadient INdex (GRIN) lenses (where the index of refraction changes along the length of the lens), and radial GRIN lenses (where the index of refraction changes depending on radial position). First order achromatic principles will be reviewed and applied to each system as a starting point and refined through the use of ray trace software. optical performance will be assessed in terms of focusing efficiency and imaging. Cost will then be evaluated by accounting for current manufacturing costs and retail price through several distributors.

This paper will demonstrate a graphical method for selecting a pair of optical components to simultaneously achromatize and passively athermalize an imaging lens for use in a housing with a particular coefficient of thermal expansion. The effort will be presented for a generic spectrum, so readers may apply the method to whatever waveband and set of materials that are of interest. The term "component" is used in place of "material" since this paper will explore combinations of refractive and diffractive optics. The method for creating an achromat with two refractive materials will be reviewed. To create an athermal doublet, or lens that does not change focus under temperature changes, the same color equations are used with a slight modification to include housing thermal effects. The paper will culminate by demonstrating how a set of two materials can be used to both color correct and passively athermalize a single lens;these materials can be quickly chosen to match a particular housing material via nomograph. A sample chart for a common waveband will be demonstrated.

Satellite-based remote sensing offers the best opportunity for studying the properties of atmospheric aerosols and their radiative effects on the global scale over extended periods Tropospheric aerosols represent the largest uncertainty in predicting the radiative forcing of climate (IPCC, 2001). A key question is whether atmospheric aerosols contribute to warming or cool the climate system. Since the sign of direct radiative forcing is controlled by the ability of aerosol particles to absorb light, the information on the single scattering albedo of different aerosol types and its variations with aerosol lifecycles is clearly very desirable. Furthermore, the wavelength-dependent values of single scattering albedo from the UV to IR are important in retrieving aerosol optical depth from satellites passive remote sensing and for climate modeling. We describe the design of a space-borne polarimeter that was derived from the key science requirements. The performance of this candidate polarimeter, operating in the UV/viS/NIR spectral regions, is described. The optical design form and various optical performance parameters, including transmittance calculations of the polarimeter's spectral channels showing the "leakage" of polarization states, as well as the degree of polarization as function of wavelength and field of view are presented for the various wavelength regions. An overview of the instrument performance and driving operational parameters is presented.

An ultra-small telecentric lens with sub-millimeter thickness is proposed. This lens with 0.2 numerical aperture and high field of view is a good candidate to be used in multi-aperture super resolution imagers. Point spread function and the telecentricity of the lens is extracted numerically and measured experimentally. The ray-optics simulation results show nearly diffraction limited performance for the lens.

We proposed a novel structure to perform photon recycling for a double-light-source illumination system pumped by a laser. In the design, two kinds of phosphor are located at the two focus of an elliptical reflective surface separately, after the phosphor on the first focus pumped by laser, the backward scattering light will refocus at the other phosphor layer at the second focus. The absorption spectrum of the second phosphor should fit that of the emission light by the first phosphor. When the emission spectrum covers red light, the whole system is a double-light-source module.

Several off-the-shelf optical lenses and lens components are available for use in the design of new optical systems. But there isn't a clear methodology on how effective there can be in a real optical device. It should be noted that the use of standard optical elements reduces the cost of the optical device, which is especially important for mass production. Ease and speed of replacement are also important parameters for the usability of standard optical elements. That is why the extensive use of purchased optical elements in optical devices will simplify their operation and improve the convenience of maintenance. Selecting purchased optical components of an optical circuit is not an easy task and requires certain skills. The main problem is that the optical design stage is divided into two parts. The first part is the creation of an optical circuit from non-standard (custom) optical components with optical characteristics close to cataloging lenses. The second part is to adjust the position of the optical component to satisfy specification requirements. This process sometimes required several iterations. For the process of fitting distances in an optical system to be successful, it is necessary to take into account the properties of optical glasses such as refractive index and dispersion when choosing lens components, in addition to their focal lengths and geometrical dimensions. It should be noted that in the catalogs of optical components there are optical parameters of lenses, and also glass parameters of the lens. This is essential information for lens designers to substitution the custom optical element for the off-the-shelf lens. Problems that arise with such a replacement are based on a limited number of standard lenses and lens components. Calcium fluoride is a desirable material for optical design of space systems in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared bands. Modem calcium fluoride materials fabricated for the photolithography industry are highly resistant to space radiation. The wide wavelength band and low dispersion are also desirable properties. Unfortunately, calcium fluoride has a host of significant material property issues which hinder its use in the space environment. Low hardness, susceptibility to thermal and mechanical shock, and large coefficient of thermal expansion present significant challenges during development of opto-mechanical designs. Sandia National Laboratories Monitoring Systems and Technology Center has fielded a calcium fluoride based optical system for use in space. The Sandia design solution is based upon a spring-loaded mount which uses no volatile organic compounds. The theory of the Sandia solution is developed and design rules are presented. The Sandia design solution is illustrated for a specific example. Example design and margin calculations are shown. Finally, lessons learned from our design realization and qualification testing efforts are shared for the benefit of the community.

In this paper, the design of a dual field-of-view optical system for 3-5 mum infra-red focal-plane arrays is described. Preliminary calculations are done to determine the first-order parameters of the narrow and the wide-field modes. To achieve a switchable dual field-of-view system, two different optical configurations, one based on the axial motion of a lens group and the other based on a rotate-in motion of two separated lens groups, are studied and compared. Diffractive and conic surfaces are used to control the color and the monochromatic aberrations with less number of total lenses used. Paraxial and real-ray modelling of the Narcissus effect is described. It is shown that the rotate-in scheme achieves better optical performance in both the narrow and the wide-field modes. The axial-motion scheme suffers from poor lateral color in the wide-angle mode. The final optical designs along with their aberrations curves and MTF plots are presented showing excellent performance.
