Helicopter mounted optical systems require compact packaging, good image performance (approaching the diffraction-limit), and must survive and operate in a rugged shock and thermal environment. The always-present requirement for low weight in an airborne sensor is paramount when considering the optical configuration. In addition, the usual list of optical requirements which must be satisfied within narrow tolerances, including field-of-view, vignetting, boresight, stray light rejection, and transmittance drive the optical design. It must be determined early in the engineering process which internal optical alignment adjustment provisions must be included, which may be included, and which will have to be omitted, since adding alignment features often conflicts with the requirement for optical component stability during operation and of course adds weight. When the system is to be modular and mates with another optical system, a telescope designed by different contractor in this case, additional alignment requirements between the two systems must be specified and agreed upon. Final delivered cost is certainly critical and "touch labor" assembly time must be determined and controlled. A clear plan for the alignment and assembly steps must be devised before the optical design can even begin to ensure that an arrangement of optical components amenable to adjustment is reached. The optical specification document should be written contemporaneously with the alignment plan to insure compatibility. The optics decisions that led to the success of this project are described and the final optical design is presented. A description of some unique pupil alignment adjustments, never performed by us in the infrared, is described.

The theoretical basis for the mirror high-aperture optical system synthesis, based on the properties of the reflecting surface accepted as the base having a shape of a paraboloid of rotation are considered in the work design parameters and residual aberrations tables of the few design solutions for considered optical systems are presented. From the analysis of aberration correction of the image formed by the considered optical system, it follows that the angular value image space is limited, primarily, the image surface curvature. To compensate for curvature of the image surface can be applied Smith lens. The additional condition that determines a high aperture ratio of the optical system of the considered lens as a whole was introduced, but it complicates the process of correcting the aberrations of a wide beam of rays. It is shown that the use of afocal Mersenne system with known anaberration properties, allows you to build a series of compact and SLR mirror-lens systems with aplanatic, anastigmatic and plananastigmatic aberration correction formed the image, at the same time the length of the system is about four times smaller than the diameter of its entrance pupil. Importantly, when applying the lens for using in a long wavelength range emission, the requirements for aberration correction image formed by the lens are reduced, and accordingly, manufacturability are increases.

Making a lens design working at cryogenic temperature is a real challenge. Both optical and mechanical designer must work together to prevent problems during operation. The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), currently under construction will be a facility instrument for the 8-m Gemini South telescope. The science instrument is a cryogenic integral field spectrograph based on a lenslet array. The integral field nature of the instrument allows for a full mapping of the focal plane at coarse spectral resolution. With such a data cube, artifacts within the PSF such as residual speckles can be suppressed. Additionally, the initial detection of any candidate planet will include spectral information that can be used to distinguish it from a background object: candidates can be followed up with detailed spectroscopic observations. The optics between the lenslet array and the detector are essentially a standard spectrograph with a collimating set of lenses, a dispersive prism and a camera set of lenses in a folded assembly. This paper describes the process from the first preliminary design to the final cryogenic system for both optical and mechanical design to achieve cryogenic working solution. We also discussed the assembly procedure (room temperature vs cryogenic compensation), the test support equipments and finally the laboratory optical performances over the field of view.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will measure the distribution of total column carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere from an Earth-orbiting satellite. Three high-resolution grating spectrometers measure two CO2 bands centered at 1.61 and 2.06 mum and the oxygen A-band centered at 0.76 mum in the near infrared region of the spectrum. This paper presents the optical design and highlights the critical optical requirements flowed down from the scientific requirements. These requirements necessitate a focal ratio of f/1.9, a spectral resolution of 20,000, and precedence-setting requirements for polarization stability and the instrument line shape function. The solution encompasses three grating spectrometers that are patterned after a simple refractive spectrometer approach consisting of an entrance slit, a two-element collimator, a planar reflection grating, and a two-element camera lens. Each spectrometer shares a common field of view through a single all-reflective telescope. The light is then re-collimated and passed through a relay system, separating the three bands before re-imaging the scene onto each of the spectrometer entrance slits using an all-reflective inverse Newtonian re-imager.

We present a new suggestion for treating skew rays. In the new suggestion. we hypothetically divide a spherical lens. at each point of intersection of the incident rays with the spherical lens. into two effective perpendicular lengthless cylindrical lenses. One of the hypothetical cylindrical lenses is effective in the vertical direction while the other is effective in the horizontal direction. A method is given for calculating the resulted vertical and horizontal angles of refraction. After calculating these angles one can combine. at that point of incidence. the two components into a vector sum to find the resultant refracted ray. The new suggested method is first discussed and demonstrated for one single lens. and then generalized to optical systems of many components. The method's power and effectiveness in lens and optical systems design is demonstrated. A software package is designed and written for the purpose of optical ray tracing. The new method is implemented in this software. The name we gave to this package is "CALOSD". CALOSD is an acronym for Computer Aided Lens and optical Systems design. CALOSD is capable of producing very accurate tabulated data as well as graphical displays of an optical system and rays traced from different points or angles of view: including a top view.

Many illumination situations involve a flat surface and an oblique luminaire placement. Today's commercially available luminaires give very uneven illumination here. A novel injection-moldable segmented lens is presented that will uniformly illuminate a rectangular zone, such as a stair-step or a picture on a wall. Its design is a development of prior methods(1) of lens-surface generation that derived the array of surface normal vectors required to match a source with a particular illumination prescription. This matching is done via grids on the unit sphere: one for the source and one for the prescription. The cells of these two grids are sized so that they have the same flux of lumens, according to the source intensity and the prescribed illumination, respectively. The first development is the use of an equi-flux polar grid for the target rectangle, because most light sources have circular symmetry. The second development is the radial segmentation of the lens surface in order to approximate the non-irrotational array of surface normal vectors derived from the two grids. designs are presented for step-lighting by LEDs and fiber-optic billboard lighting.

We present three designs and tolerances of wide-field imagers (30x30 arc-minutes or larger) for astronomical surveying. Two infrared cameras (CPAPIR and PANORAMIX II) were designed for the 0.8-2.4 mum band and a third one (WIRCAM) for the visible and near-infrared band extending from 410 nm to 950 nm. The cameras are installed on the telescopes of the Canada-France-Hawaii (Hawaii, USA) and Mont Megantic Observatories (Quebec, Canada). The three cameras are compact, use only spherical refractive components and have an internal pupil accessible for insertion of filtering components. A Lyot stop must be used in the infrared camera for background rejection. For PANORAMIX II, a set of filters is used at the internal pupil. Correction of the large off-axis aberrations generated by the telescopes, wide spectral coverage, material choices, cryogenic temperature and alignment were the main design challenges. Also, tolerancing was particularly critical for the infrared cameras because they are cryogenically cooled, thus forbidding adjustment of internal components. The cameras theoretical performances are presented in terms of point-spread function, encircled energy and distortion.

Introducing the desired amount of distortion in an optical system is possible and relatively straight forward for optical designer. Known f-theta lenses used in laser scanner system is one of the most popular lenses of this type. With the development of DWDM system, compact spectrometer and various grating based devices, the interest in solving optical problems with innovative optical design has been a revival. On the other hand, it is possible to simplify considerably the task of the software by designing more sophisticated optical element. The F-sin(theta) lens is such a device which can be used in various grating based devices to improve the performance. This optical device is intended to provide a new lens or lens group which can be used with a diffraction grating to provide a linear output plane with the wavelength (lambda), but also with the order of diffraction (m), or with the grating spatial frequency, or with the inverse of the index of refraction (l/n). Based on theoretical consideration, we calculated which amount of distortion is desired to get linear output plane for a grating based device. We present singlet. achromatic doublet and mirror having this characteristic. These F-sin(theta) lenses present satisfactory distortion charateristic and have an improved correction for the curvature of image plane. F-sin(theta) lens will be also name F-lambda lens.

The performance of an optical system can be degraded by the intrusion of stray light from sources both inside and outside of the system field of view. Stray light, or "veiling glare," can be particularly distracting in visual systems such as Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) systems. This paper describes techniques used by the authors to map stray light source positions in the far field for HMD systems and to quantitatively define their impact. The mapping can be performed over 4 pi steradians (i.e., over a full sphere) both inside and outside the system field of view. Monte-Carlo ray tracing algorithms are utilized for determining an effective source intensity distribution across the entire far field and a subtractive technique is utilized that separates the veiling glare component from the desired optical signal component. Once the major veiling glare source positions are identified, methods to reduce veiling glare can be determined. A technique for reducing noise in the calculation due to the statistical nature of the Monte Carlo ray trace is also discussed.

Consumers nowadays have a higher expectation on cameras beyond the function of taking photos or videos. In the early years, the applications of cameras with lenses were, however, very restricted. A new generation of super wide-angle lenses capture the user's surroundings in full 360 degrees, allowing the user's friends or families to step inside our universe and experience it, live. However, for such wide angle lens coverage, the relative illumination of the lens must take the vector nature of the light into account. Consequently, the polarization of light becomes a critical parameter. Custom coatings are commonly spread on the lens surface to avoid light transmission polarization falloff. But for consumer applications, complex coating is not a practical solution because it raises cost. In this paper, we present how to take care of the polarization during the design and analysis of the lens design. Additionally, design tips are proposed to suppress the polarization impact.
