Over the past twenty years numerous papers and patents have reported on the design of infrared zoom lenses for a variety of civilian and military applications. The vast majority of these lenses have been afocal 8-12 mu m zoom lenses with magnification ratios of five to twenty. With the advancement of 3-5 mu m staring focal plane array technology a growing demand has emerged for a compact imaging 3-5 mu m zoom lens. To meet this demand a variety of such zoom lenses have been designed which support image formats of over 10 mm diagonal. In this paper the preliminary design of a high magnification 3-5 mu m zoom lens is described. Infrared system modeling, detailed lens performance and manufacturing issues are reviewed.

A Finite-Difference Method in Non-Orthogonal Curvilinear Coordinate System (FDM-NOCCS) is the combination of the domain transformation technique and the Finite-Difference Method (FDM). It has the visualization and simplification of the traditional FDM. On the other hand. it overcomes the weakness of EDM in dealing with complicated boundary shapes, averts the interpolation between the grid points in the vicinities of boundaries, and also avoids the abnormalism in the transformation from the physical domain to the computational domain. The FDM-NOCCS is used in the computer aided design of electron gun for color cathode ray tube. Compared with the formal FDM, the FDM-NOCCS can save quite a lot of CPU time and computer memory. FDM-NOCCS works well with the complicated e-gun systems design.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of a Locking Lorentz Slide. Lorentz Slide actuators, which are based on the Lorentz force principal of physics and are also called Voice Coils, have earned wide-spread. use in the aerospace industry because of their superior performance (precision, force, stroke, wide temperature range including cryogenics, reliability and compactness). NASA has particularly favored these devices in their space telescopes and scientific instruments. Up to now "Voice Coils" have had to keep power on to hold position, which is limiting in many space applications. NASA, however, has found what promises to be a simple, innovative work-around with its Locking Lorentz Slide approach. This paper is an introduction to that concept and its possibilities, so, in this paper, the Locking Lorentz Slide is described, its principles of operation explained and its expected performance given. Since NASA is embarking on a development effort for this actuator more technical papers detailing hardware, tests and detailed analysis will follow.

We report the design and fabrication of Hybrid Dichroic Mirrors (HDM) for the separation and the recombination of white laser beam by using small sized flat plate far a small Laser Projection Display (LPD) system. This small sized laser projection display system is consist of a white laser, hybrid dichroic mirrors, 3-channel AOM and a beam scanning part. Red, green and blue light beams are separated by one flat plate dichroic mirror and also modulated by the 3-channel AOM, are recombined to one beam by another flat plate dichroic mirror. These hybrid dichroic mirrors are designed to measure the separation and recombination of s-polarized light beams of 647, 515, 488nm wavelength from the white laser. Key element of the mirror design includes the quarter wavelength multilayers optimized to provide the best performance for the separation and recombination of light beams. The calculated values of the transmittance, which are pass through the hybrid dichroic mirror, are 95% for each separated/recombined color beams. The measured values of transmittance are over 90%.

The objective of this research program was the development of the technology for the industrial manufacturing of HOEs for technical applications such as: holographic solar concentrators for utilization in photovoltaic energy conversion and solar photochemistry, and integrated holographic stacks for daylighting, glazing and shading in buildings. Some of the fabricated HOEs exhibit apertures in the order of 8 square meters. The accomplished technology facilitates the continuous fabrication of the holographic films on glass or plastic substrata. The standard holographic material we use for the fabrication of HOEs is dichromated gelatin (DCG) on glass or plastic film (PET) substrata The dichromated gelatin layer could be prepared with different compositions to accommodate the desired exposures and chemical processing procedures. At present we manufacture holographic plates on glass substrata in sizes of up to 1 meter square. The holographic film on plastic substratum is 20 cm wide and could be made in lengths of hundredths of meters. The inexpensive fabrication of such large formats is attained by automation of the entire process: film manufacturing, hologram copying, development and test. We present in this paper the design considerations and the developed manufacturing procedures. These comprise the fabrication of large format reflective holograms for concentrating mirrors and the copying of transmissive holograms, such as gratings and lenses, using in-plane contact copying in checkerboard arrangement or rotating drum continuous copying onto an endless plastic film.

optical fibre large screen display is a novel technique in the field of large screen display. The design of the optical fibre light outlet (polyvinyl rode shaped) should be optimized in consideration of the viewing field and the radiant intensity of the screen. The principal direction and the field distribution of the light output of the rode shaped outlet should be considered in designs. The conclusion of the computer simulation shows that the brightness of the screen will reach 4000 nit, the viewing angle will be 20° in meridian plane and 120° in sagittal plane.

256×256 diffractive microlens arrays have been designed by considering the independent optical and processing parameters for 3-5 μm wavelength with a microlens size of 100 μm. The lens F number and array pitch are 1.5 and 100 μm, respectively. The diffractive microlens arrays have been fabricated on the surface of Si substrates by successive photolithography and Ar+ ion-beam-etching technique. The practical processes and fabrication method are discussed. The optical characteristics and measurements of the diffractive microlens arrays are presented.

Computational materials science has evolved in recent years into a reliable theory capable of predicting not only idealized materials and device performance properties, but also those that apply to practical engineering developments. The codes run on workstations and even now are fast enough to be useful design tools. A review will be presented of the current status of this rapidly advancing field. As a demonstration of the power of the methods, predictions of the native point and complex defect, and impurity densities for the Hg-0.8 Cd0.2Te alloy as functions of external processing conditions will be treated. Where measurements have been done, the observed values agree well with the predictions. As an example, we fmd that As incorporates predominately on the cation sublattice, if the material is grown from the Te side of the existence curve las occurs in MBE growth), whereas it tends to reside on the anion sublattice in Hg-saturated growth. On the cation sublattice As is a donor. It is an acceptor on the Te sublattice. We have devised a post-MBE-growth processing method to encourage the transfer of As from the cation to the anion sublattice. Those aspects of the proposed process that have been tested work.

The objective of this paper is to report the recent developments in lightweight mirror technology that have occurred at Composite Optics, Incorporated (COI). The developments occurred as a result of the activities being conducted in support of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Programs. Our sponsors on these programs are the Marshall and Goddard Space Flight Centers and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The requirements, design approach, actual performance, and the technology status for each program are summarized in the following sections. The emergence of composite designs provides exciting potential for nontraditional, accurate, lightweight, stable, stiff, and high strength composite mirrors. This evolving technology promises significant improvement in reducing weight, cost and cycle time for future infrared, visible, and x-ray systems. Customers currently embracing composite mirror technology for radiometric use are already reaping substantial system performance benefits. Other customers interested in LIDAR, IR, visible, and grazing incidence x-ray applications are eagerly awaiting successful completion of current technology development and demonstration efforts.

Digital Close-Range Photogrammetry has made tremendous improvements over the last years. Many of the elements contributing to those improvements were the advances in algorithms and their implementation into commercial systems. It has become customary that production personnel without photogrammetric know-how use systems. Another area of major change is the use of Digital Close-Range Photogrammetry systems in machine control. These applications require totally automated systems without human supervision. While the algorithmic performance of such systems is a difficult task other issues, such as ultra high-resolution cameras suitable for the rough environment and their response time, are critical elements for the acceptance of such systems. Cameras with much higher resolutions and better performance have been appearing on the market over the last years. There are Cameras with CCD-sensors containing 4 k×4 k pixels are available. While these cameras offer a larger sensor their performance is not dramatically better than that of the widely used cameras using 3 k×2 k sensors. Actually the price/performance of these cameras is poorer. A new camera series offering both 3 k×2 k and 7 k×4 k sensors with a custom optics and a high-performance CCD-sensor read-out was designed to break current accuracy barriers. Innovations included in these cameras include custom optics. This allows the optics to be tuned to the application and not just general photography needs. They take advantage of the full dynamic range offered by the CCD-sensor, i.e. use of a 12 bit analog-to-digital converter and 16 bit per pixel in order to take full advantage of the CCD-sensor. They have an optical/mechanical design to assure an extreme geometric stability of the camera. Finally they include an `on-board' processor to perform all image computations within the camera.
