A new optical computation method for the monitoring of chemical reactions requires filters with spectral transmittance curves that vary in a complicated way with wavelength. In this paper we consider the design of two different sets of filters, one of which could be used to predict the degree of curing of a polymer from an analysis of its Raman spectra. The problem is not easy because the required filters have sharp spectral features in a narrow spectral region. Two different design methods are used. The performance of one set designed by conventional means is very close to the specifications. However, current thin film deposition methods are probably incapable of producing filters of such thickness. The second solution is based on the use of several filters placed in series. It should be possible to implement this particular solution, but its performance is not nearly as good. Nevertheless, calculations indicate that this filter pair should also result in a satisfactory control of the curing process.

The use of holographic optical elements (HOEs) in conjunction with LCDs to make high performance economical autostereoscopic displays is a new and promising development, The very first demonstrators showed that the technique can be used to produce very good quality 3D and 2D images, Our current work is directed at improving performance and exploring other opportunities opened up by the basic concept, These include improved optical design of the HOE and, possibility of using LEDs as light sources and that of using the HOE to generate 3D an at the same time provide colour separation to allow the display of full colour images on a monochrome LCD without the use of conventional colour filters. In addition the use of this technology to display two or more images on the LCD such that two viewers will each see different images on the one display.

Basing on energetic processes studying in the near-field radiator zone, a new concept of antenna synthesizing for ultrawideband electromagnetic pulse radiation has been suggested. The results of experimental investigations of the antennae developed with using of this concept for high-power applications are presented. The antennae have small dimensions, high electrical strength, cardioid pattern with linear polarization of the pulse radiated and they are ideally adapted to be used as a steering antenna array element. A high-voltage nanosecond bipolar pulse generator design to excite antennae is described.

developments in laser digitizing technology now make it possible to capture very accurate 3D images of the surface of the human body in less than 20 seconds. Applications for the images range from animation of movie characters to the design and visualization of clothing and individual equipment (CIE). In this paper we focus on modeling the user/equipment interface. Defining the relative geometry between user and equipment provides a better understanding of equipment performance, and can make the design cycle more efficient. Computer-aided fit testing (CAFT) is the application of graphical and statistical techniques to visualize and quantify the human/equipment interface in virtual space. In short, CAFT looks to measure the relative geometry between a user and his or her equipment. The design cycle changes with the introducing CAFT;now some evaluation may be done in the CAD environment prior to prototyping. CAFT may be applied in two general ways: 1) to aid in the creation of new equipment designs and 2) to evaluate current designs for compliance to performance specifications. We demonstrate the application of CAFT with two examples. First, we show how a prototype helmet may be evaluated for fit, and second we demonstrate how CAFT may be used to measure body armor coverage.

This paper describes the cumulative status to-date, and current developments in the British Aerospace IR scene projector system technology in early 1997. The systems have been developed for Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation in missile test and evaluation facilities. Historically, the technology has been called ''Thermal Picture Synthesis'' an early equivalent of what is now known as Infra-red Scene Projection (IRSP). Earlier generations of system were based on a monolithic resistor-substrate construction, a modification of which is still used for ground target simulations (TPS3), whereas the more recent systems for air target simulations are based on fully suspended resistor designs (TPS4). These projector systems incorporating full scale arrays have been fabricated at up to 256 x 256 complexity. Research work is being carried out on high temperature arrays for air-to-air countermeasure simulations, and the first TPS5 full system at 512 x 512 complexity has completed its design stage and has recently moved into fabrication. Research testbed arrays of 768 x 768 have just been made, and 1024 x 1024 arrays are presently being fabricated. The paper includes an initial introduction to the basics of the technology, and is followed by a section on certain specialised features to combat inherent issues in the technology. Specifications and the current status of each category of device is then given.

This paper describes the design of a fibre optical current transducer based on a mirror Faraday rotator. Computer simulation techniques are used to model the transducer, and to assess its operating performance. The transducer is used to measure the fault current waveforms encountered on a 33 kV distribution feeder. The measured waveforms are processed by a current differential scheme applied to the protection of this feeder. The operating performance of the protection is analysed and compared with the performance obtained when using conventional current transformers. Conclusions are drawn regarding the advantages and disadvantages of using fibre optical current transducers in protection relaying.

Genetic algorithm and its application in lens design is studied. A new algorithm is presented which includes a genetic algorithm (GA) and damped least square (DLS) method. The convergence property of GA in lens design is demonstrated. A GA. generated design is obtained without artificial intervention. The aberration correction has to be done by DLS, and the result is close to the starting configuration generated by GA.

Recent advances in the manufacturing of large (up to 62 mm diameter) glass blanks with axial index gradients of up to 0.20 enable significant performance gains in optical designs. The new axial gradient material has an index and dispersion similar to SF (short flint) glasses, except the index varies continuously through the axis of the blank. The axial gradient material and numerous design examples using the new material will be presented.

The optical system of an optical rotary encoder is presented. The requirements of the optics system are given and their effects on optical design decisions are discussed, Steps taken to insure stable operation over a -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C temperature range are presented. designing for manufacturing toleraces is discussed. A novel application of a fiber illuminator LED as a short-distance collimated source is shown to be an acceptable low-cost alternative to a laser diode. The importance of effective plastic element employment in low-cost, mass-production optical systems is demonstrated.
