Some results obtained in the realization of compact relay systems design are presented. Four optical configurations have been analyzed. Two symmetrical schemes were examined having field Smith's lenses for a image scaling of-ix. The achieved numerical aperture is up to 0.35 and the MTFs curves are at 40 cycles1/mm for a contrast ratio of 0.2. The third design has a large field of 40 mm but its F-number is about F/4.5. The last relay system is unsymmetrical. The scaling is 2x and the image field exceeds 50 mm. The aberration balancing results and the optical systems performance are illustrated.

The long range observation system (LROS) is based on Ritchey—chretien telescope that was designed, built and tested by ELOP. The telescope is rxunted inside a sealed external structure with large entrance window. The concept adapted in the LROS design is to divide the mechanical structures into two major assemblies: — Internal optical bench that supports the sensitive optical elennts . This bench is based on a structure made of composite material. — External body that protects and seals the internal optical structure. This structure includes large entrance window and interface flanges that can be supported on mba, tripod or a pedestal. The key to this design was to properly select and size these two structures in order to achieve the nost rigid but light—weighted structhre . This paper describes the study that was made to specify design criteria and to analyse the design according to these criteria.

Using the concept of matrix theory for lens design, a triplet lens can be replaced by a singlet lens which has an equivalent system matrix without changing its optical performance. Then, using third order Siedel's first aberration coefficient of the singlet lens is equal to zero, and the focal length and the physical length of the triplet lens are kept constant as constraints, an algebraic technique for optimizing a triplet lens is derived. Results show that this new optimizing technique is more effective than other conventional techniques for optimizing a triplet lens in the case of plane waves.

Photonic switching systems image arrays of sources onto arrays of detectors and modulators. Even this simple functionality poses serious challenges for the optical engineer. Image quality must be excellent because the large modulator bandwidth demands small modulator size. Magnification and distortion must be precisely corrected for the spot array to fit onto the detector array. The system must be extraordinarily stable for the spots to stay on the detector array. For these reasons, photonic switching systems have traditionally been mounted on vibration isolated optical tables. This paper will describe our newest system, which is mounted in a standard electronics frame. Experimental results and design methodologies will be discussed.

The optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona, has designed and constructed a unique 'red corrected' astrometric astrograph objective lens for the United States Naval Observatory. A five element design, with an integral Schott OG550 filter, was developed to meet the requirement for a 2060 mm focal length, f/10 system. The lens provides a nearly zero distortion flat field of 5 by 5 degrees in the sky. A weight limit of 55 kg led to the use of a titanium lens barrel. Assembly tolerances are satisfied through the use of elastomeric subcell mounting of the individual elements, and an adjustable final element. The lens is hermetically sealed and uses a filter/dessicator system to insure the long term cleanliness of the optics.
