The opticaldesign of a breadboard high resolution infrared spectrometer for the IRS instrument on the SIRTF mission is discussed. The spectrometer uses a crossed echelle grating configuration to cover the spectral region from 10 to 20 mu m with a resolving power of approximate to 600. The all reflective spectrometer forms a nearly diffraction limited image of the two dimensional spectrum on a 128 x 128 arsenic doped silicon area array with 75 mu m pixels. Interferometric measurements of real surfaces are combined with computed opticaldesign analyses. To accomplish this, a special software interface driver was developed to accept serial optical Path Difference (OPD) data from a Zygo Mark III interferometer, apply standard algorithms, and convert the measured data into a CODE V readable file. Analysis was conducted on a large aperture developmental optical system containing a fold mirror of eggcrate construction. MTF performance of the entire system was computed as were the contributions of individual surfaces to overall optical quality. Diffraction effects due to the rib structure of the eggcrate mirror were apparent in this analysis, as were the effects of gravity and figure components of the wavefront. This hybrid analysis demonstrates the usefulness of coupling interferometry with an opticaldesign program in the analysis of complex optical systems.

optical processor design is the art of architecting a computing machine with components that are either currently available or which can be developed with a reasonable extension of current technology. There is no difference between this and the design of a processor using any other technology except that in optics the component selection is more limited and the cost of implementing certain classes of operations is far less. This paper outlines the characteristics of many current components and the impact of these characteristics on optical architectures. At the present time the most critical components in optical processing are at the interface with other processing technologies. These critical components are spatial light modulators and photosensors. Advances in semiconductor technology and opto-electronics for optical communications may greatly reduce the current component limitations. In this paper suggestions are provided for new component development and the impact of such developments on optical processing technology is discussed.

If the resulting optics is used in a larger spectral range we must correct not only the chromatic error of the conventional, refractive, part of the design but also of the DOE. An all acousto-optic infrared scene projector (IRSP) has been developed for use in evaluating thermal-imaging guidance systems at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator (KHILS) facility located at Elgin AFB, Florida. The IRSP is a laser source based projector incorporating Scophony illumination and scanning methods to produce 96 X 96 pixel multi-wavelength images at very high frame rates (400 Hz). The IRSP is composed of five functionally similar optical trains, four of which are fed with a different `color' infrared laser. The separate scenes from each optical train are then combined and projected simultaneously into the imaging guidance system.

Thus, opticaldesigners need account for gradient dispersion as well as gradient index. A dispersion model for the material must be readily available and opticaldesign programs must be capable of defining and maintaining this relationship before and during optimization, simplifying user input and confining the material to walk a well defined path on the glass map. Thinking in terms of lines on the glass map for arbitrary glass families yields a simple dispersion model based on least squares fitting of Buchdahl coefficients. This paper introduces the concept of glass lines and outlines a technique to construct a dispersion model for any contiguous family of gradient refractive material.

An original plastic-lens array molded integrally as one block having a function of forming a unit-magnification erect image has been developed. The lens array consists of eight lens devices. The lens device has a roof prism, a reflecting v-groove, and a pair of convex-lens surfaces. A prototype of the lens arrays are arranged side by side. Thickness of the lens array is 4.5 mm, distance between object and image planes is 14.4 mm, array pitch is 1.3 mm, and the effective imaging region is 220 mm. The average modulation transfer function (MTF) at 41 p/mm of the lens array is 76% in the row direction (Y-direction) and 80% in the direction (X-direction) normal to Y-direction. The average F/NO in line-scanning is 1.8. The average irradience unevenness in line-scanning is 17%. The focal depth is +/- 0.6 mm in the area with the MTF being 60% or more. With this prototype a high-resolution image was attained. So, the lens arrays can be applied to imaging devices for use in a compact facsimile, image scanner, LED printer, and so on.

It has been studied by theoretical analysis and experiment, and has been given the optimal structure. The displacement of the beamsplitter can be designed in need, which is about 1.0 - 3.0 mm. The polarization degree of the emergent light is below 1.2%, transmission is above 90%, transmission range is from 300 nm to 2500 nm. Its structure is simple, making convenient and loss low.
