A differential equation method is applied to the design of a three-mirror telescope. The resulting system is mostly free of spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism. From caustic theory and a generalization of the Coddington Equations, the Abbe sine condition and the constant optical path length condition, three coupled differential equations, one for each reflecting surface, are generated. A system which satisfies these conditions will have a high resolution over a wide field of view. Analysis of this application is presented as a comparison to a similar three-mirror telescope system produced by conventional optimization techniques.

This paper discusses a method to characterize feathering and determine feathering quality. The characterization is based upon the change of the color coordinate across the transition region. "Feathering" of an optical coating is the gradual taper, without any discernible boundary, from a coated to uncoated region. There can be various reasons why a thin film optical coating may not be applied to the entire surface of a see-through article. Feathering is necessary when the viewer, looking through a transmissive element, is focused on the far-field and would be distracted by a coating boundary which redirects focus to the near field. Done incorrectly, feathering may produce visible artifacts which are ineffective and objectionable to the user. Examples are provided.

Diffractive lenses have recently become realizable elements in optical systems. However, their application to wide band optical imaging systems are limited because they are highly dispersive and exhibit unacceptable amounts of color related aberrations. In this paper we will present a design study of the achromatization of hybrid refractive-diffractive lenses over wide spectral bands. design examples of hybrid lenses which operate in the visible, mid-infrared (3 - 5 micron) and long-wave infrared (8 - 12 micron) spectral bands will be presented and a comparison with conventional lenses designed to operate in these spectral bands will be discussed.

In this paper, different opticaldesigns, which are composed of different MWIR optical materials, are utilized for passive athermalization and their performance in athermalization are analyzed. The opticaldesigns are carried out by preserving the athermal property as well as keeping the image quality at higher levels within the working temperature between -40 degrees C and +60 degrees C. The passive athermalization process begins with the calculation of athermalization conditions of candidate material properties. By considering these conditions, athermal material pairs are chosen. To reduce optical aberrations, aspherical surfaces are utilized during the optimization process. At the end of the design phase, the performance of different configurations of athermal optical material pairs, which are enclosed by aluminum alloy housing material, are presented.

This paper presents a methodology for designing an athermalised dual field of view zoom lens in long wave infrared (8 mu m - 12 mu m) spectral band by using the benefits of paraxial optics. By using this design methodology the opticaldesigner can develop many types of complex optical systems in a straightforward way. The key feature of this design methodology relies on utilization of paraxial optics for defining the initial positions of the optical elements. The opticaldesign is based on moving a single lens for changing the optical system's FOV thereby reducing the number of moving parts and simplifying the assembly procedure of the system. The opticaldesign begins with optimization process using paraxial optics. Then the opticaldesign using paraxial optics is used as a template for designing the final optical system by lens material selection for compensating the shift in system's focus due to thermal effects and lens thickness tuning.
