Prior publications dealing with techniques for estimating axial contact stresses in lenses mechanically clamped axially near their rims have assumed the lenses to be single elements. In this paper, we expand the theor...

An important step in the fabrication of an optical component involves the imparting of a precise contour on the optic, which can be expensive and time consuming. Ion beam figuring is the imparting of a contour on an optical component by removing material through the impingement of a broad beam of accelerated neutral particles, and provides a highly deterministic method for the final precision figuring (or correcting) of optical components with advantages over conventional methods. The high predictability allows the possibility of single step figuring, resulting in significant time and cost savings. And unlike grinding, polishing and lapping, ion figuring is non-contacting and so avoids several problems including: edge roll off effects, tool wear, and loading of the work piece. It has previously been demonstrated that ion figuring is effective for the correcting of large optical components. These implementations typically use the process for final figure correction on meter class optical components. The work discussed here is the development of the Precision Ion Machining System (PIMS) at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, designed for the processing of smaller (less than 10 cm diameter) optics. Initial experiments using a Kaufman type ion source to figure 8 cm diameter fused silica and silicon carbide samples were successful. Experiments involved correcting flat samples and imparting spherical and aspherical contours.
Liquids have not found widespread application in opticaldesign for a number of reasons, one of which is the fact that index of refraction data for liquids is available for only very few compounds, and the data that d...

The concepts and current status of Japanese 8.2 m optical and IR telescope project, SUBARU, are summarized. SUBARU aims to achieve imaging with very high resolution of 0.2 - 0.1 arc sec, and high observing capability through the wide wavelength region of optical and near-IR. The construction of SUBARU has started in 1991. So far the 8.3 m mirror blank was successfully formed, the construction of the lower fixed part of the enclosure is almost finished, and the main parts of the telescope are being fabricated. The first light of SUBARU is scheduled to be 1998 spring.

This presentation highlights the results of a recently completed study that examines the Texas-Mexico multimodal transport system already in place, current plans for improvements or expansion, and opportunities and constraints faced by each transport mode - motor carriage, rail, maritime, and air. Particular emphasis is given to findings regarding transportation developments in Mexico. The study concludes that in Mexico, all modes are working at establishing new services and strategic alliances, intermodal arrangements are on the rise, and private-sector participation in infrastructure improvements is growing daily at Mexican seaports and airports as well as within that nation's highway and rail systems. This presentation looks at developments that concern privatization, deregulation, infrastructure improvements, financing arrangements, and new services in Mexico.

The initial conceptualization of agile manufacturing was the result of a 1991 study - chaired by Lehigh Professor Roger N. Nagel and California-based entrepreneur Rick Dove, President of Paradigm Shifts, International - of what it would take for U.S. industry to regain global manufacturing competitiveness by the early twenty-first century. This industry-led study, reviewed by senior management at over 100 companies before its release, concluded that incremental improvement of the current system of manufacturing would not be enough to be competitive in today's global marketplace. Computer-based information and production technologies that were becoming available to industry opened up the possibility of an altogether new system of manufacturing, one that would be characterized by a distinctive integration of people and technologies;of management and labor;of customers, producers, suppliers, and society.

Despite the emerging developments of exotic laser-based visual imaging systems for underwater use, there is still a significant place for "conventional" camera and lighting systems. This paper seeks to review this fairly mature conventional technology, by examining the trends in the underlying technologies which determine its continuing place in oceanic science and engineering. Specific existing sensors are reviewed, together with sensor developments, in order to establish a useful end-user perspective on current sensor choices. Some prospects for future developments are also presented for consideration by those involved in more advanced programmes.< >
