Recent focus on the development of HDTV systems worldwide has raised a critical concern--the economic viability of HDTV for the home marketplace. While projection systems performing at or above HDTV-quality levels exist today, they are designed for the institutional market and are priced far above the threshold for the individual consumer. Manufacturers will be under considerable pressure to significantly reduce the cost of HDTV projectors, as will the suppliers of key components such as lenses. Fortunately, recent developments have been made in the design, development and manufacturing technologies used to produce hybrid lenses for high-performance projection systems. This is particularly true for CRT-based front- and rear-projection systems for data and graphics applications. Extending these advances to HDTV would suggest that by the time HDTV is ready for high volume mass production, cost-effective projection lenses will be enhancing, not retarding, the market acceptance of HDTV.

A compact optical communications transceiver breadboard was constructed. In order to keep the mass of the breadboard as low as possible the design was made very simple. The entire package weighs less than 5 kg. The optical module uses a 40 mW diode laser and a two-axis voice coil actuator for beam steering. A twist reflector is idealized by a surface which supports electric current in one direction only. When a transverse electric mode or a transverse magnetic mode is incident on a twist reflector, both types of modes are reflected. This property of the twist reflector to generate the cross-polarized mode is used in the development of a device that can rotate the plane of polarization of the incident electromagnetic wave by the rotation of the twist reflector about an axis normal to its surface. A ray-tracing technique is used to deduce the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization as a function of the orientation angle of the twist reflector. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the characteristics of the polarizer.

In this paper we give theoretical and experimental results for verticla-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL's). The modeling is applied to the design of InGaAs VCSEL's. A simple method is introduced to calculate the reflectivity of semiconductor stack mirrors with graded interfaces and compound metal/semiconductor stack mirrors. The theoretical predictions are compared to results from actual device measurements. A novel technique is introduced to determine material parameters: fabrication of in-plane lasers from VCSEL material. The procedure used to determine the optical mode in such an in-plane laser is described. Using the insight gained from our modeling, we have increased our external efficiency to > 30% with a threshold current density of 1 kA/cm2. Linewidth measurments on very high reflectivity VCSEL's have indicated widths as low as 85 MHz and linewidth-power products of 5 MHz. mW.

Recent advances in catheter-based ultrasound imaging technology have led to the clinical reality of imaging coronary arteries and other vasculature in a manner that was not possible in the past. For the first time dynamic cross-sectional views of blood vessels can be obtained in patients in real time. currently available instruments include catheters that contain a mechanically rotating ultrasound probe, catheters in which the ultrasound crystal is fixed but a rotating mirror transmits and receives ultrasound in a circumferential format and catheters with synthetic aperture array processing. Considerable amount of in vitro work has given a fundamental basis for interpreting intravascular ultrasound images and for using the technique in a quantitative manner to assess vascular anatomy. The feasibility studies, the current cited clinical applications and the areas where further work is required are reviewed.

Fluid transport behaviour is of great importance within the chemical process industry and in biotechnology. The complexity of this behaviour, reflected in the nature of the fundamental partial differential equations which describe it analytically, means that it has to be treated by numerical methods. In this paper the basic equations are given, and the approaches necessary to treat laminar and turbulent flows are carefully explained. As digital computers have increased in size, so has the comprehensiveness of the problems which can be treated, and the development of typical computer programs is described. Problems of accuracy and experimental validation are also surveyed, and it is shown that recent developments in whole-field optical measurement methods, and image and data processing are all involved here. Then, a review of work at City University is shown to comprise typical examples of applications to engineering situations and biotechnology problems. Chosen instances of the former are flow and heat transfer behaviour for convective enhancement caused by roughness elements, and the design balancing of a thermosyphon. The latter include such diverse studies as blood flows in arterial bifurcations, and heat and mass transport in grain storage. They involve the three-dimensional and transient capabilities of current codes, and their applicability to non-standard geometries.

A short review of recent developments in laser photocathode is presented. The importance of different processes, such as the single and multiphoton photoelectric effects are analyzed on the basis of recent experimental results. The conditions for the formation of small divergence, short pulse duration, and high current density electron beam from metallic photocathodes are discussed. Other types of photocathodes can be used as the semiconductor (GaAs, chalcopyrite) in order to produce polarized electrons. The main steps and the diagnostics for applications in photoinjector development is discussed.
