optical Enhancements to Computing Technology

Parallel optical interconnects have been well documented. The theory of parallel optical interconnects is the basis for OptiComp's current digital optical computer (DOC ii) design and fabrication program. This paper demonstrates a natural extension of the parallel theory into global or 3-D theory where a single point is imaged to every other interconnect point. This paper introduces an algorithm for a digital optical computation concept and discusses the hardware architecture for extremely wide word (approximately 128 bits) single clock addition, which is based on global free space optical interconnections. In addition, energy consumption and throughput efficiency of the new adder are examined. The motivational basis for the utilization of global free space optical interconnects is documented in reference 3.

Active and adaptive optics technology has emerged from the laboratory and is being applied to improve the performance of optical imaging and laser systems. In the last few years, development of both systems and components has accelerated. Many new concepts and devices have appeared, among which are high-performance deformable mirrors, new types of wavefront sensors, and more sophisticated wavefront processing algorithms. Equally important, a better understanding of the system design aspects of adaptive optics has been reached, particularly of the need for optimizing each system according to its application. For example, the dominant requirement in laser systems is to achieve a high Strehl ratio, whereas for ground-based astronomy the availability of guide stars is a major concern. current developments in adaptive optics for ground-based astronomy include the use of IR wavelengths, partial wavefront compensation using natural guide stars, and the use of laser guide stars to allow all-sky coverage with full compensation at visible wavelengths. While progress to date has been impressive, much work remains to bring this technology into general use.

A coherent radiation source which uses an electron beam to drive a resonator which consists of two short sections of metal grating embedded in a parallel-plate waveguide structure has been operated in the millimeter-wavelength regime. The fields in the first of the grating sections imparts velocity modulation to the beam and the second extracts power from a bunched beam. Thus, the device functions like a twocavity klystron. However, the open quasi-optical coupling structure can be utilized at wavelengths which are shorter than those that are practicable in a conventional closed cavity Idystron design. The electron beam energy and current employed in these experiments are modest (10's ofkv and 1-2 A) and the primary motivation for the work is to develop convenient moderate power sources for various applications of millimeter- and submillimeter-wavelength radiation. It is interesting to note, however, that the topology of the resonator is similar to that used by Bugayev et al.1'2 in very-high-power radiation sources at centimeter-millimeter wavelengths.

1407_47Since the previously reported successful demonstration of acceleration of electrons to $OM 12 MeV, higher trapped beam current and longer beam lifetime have been obtained. The improved confinement has led to a higher peak energy $OM 18 MeV, and is the result of increasing the strong focusing and toroidal magnetic fields, reducing magnetic field errors, and optimizing the betatron flux condition. Modifications to the electromagnet buswork are in progress to further reduce field errors, and a fast pulsed magnet system to provide dynamic stabilization of the cyclotron resonances is being studied.

Results of measurements of the optical response of high Tc superconducting infrared detectors fabricated from YBaCuO thin films for wavelengths of 3-5 μm and 8-14 μm at an operating temperature above liquid nitrogen. The measurements of a meander line detector yield a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 2 × 10-9 w Hz-1/2 and a detectivity (D*) of 1.5 × 108 cmHz1/2W-1 for radiation of 8-14 μm at a chopping frequency of 50 Hz. The response for 3-5 μm radiation is lower than that for 8-14 μm for the same detector. The authors have investigated the dependence of the optical response of these detectors on several parameters, including bias current, chopping frequency, substrate material, and film quality (associated with different fabricating methods). In addition, the device design and methods to improve the sensitivity have been discussed.

The LIGA process which is based on deep-etch lithography in combination with high-precision electroforming and moulding processes is a particularly promising method for the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. Some interesting applications can be seen in the field of integrated optics. Passive waveguide structures can be fabricated by deep-etch synchrotron radiation lithography of multilayer resist systems. Using this technique, multimode strip waveguides with a PMMA core and a P (TFPMA/MMA) cladding as well as a planar grating spectrograph have been realized. The attenuation of 0.18 dB/cm measured at a wavelength of 850 nm can be reduced, especially in the near IR-region, by the use of deuterated PMMA as a core material. For plastic fiber LAN applications, moulding processes for the replication of passive multimode waveguide components like Y-couplers or star couplers are under investigation. The advantages of the LIGA process - unrestricted design in the cross-sectional shape and a small surface roughness in the range of 10 - 20 nm - are of special interest for these developments. For coupling fibers to integrated-optical chips, structures of a coupling array have been fabricated. The fibers are guided by exactly positioned stop faces and then precisely located and prefixed by integrated spring elements. The main advantages are as follows: the thermal expansion coefficient of the array can be matched to the optical chip material, the use of spring elements for prefixing simplifies the handling, and adhesives and the connected problems can be avoided.

The objective of this project was to use expert system technology to aid in the scheduling activities performed at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). The WSMR range scheduling problem presents a complex interactive environment. A human factors approach was undertaken, in that, the goal was to implement a system which mimics current WSMR scheduling procedures. The results of this project have produced a prototypic scheduling tool, called Scheduler's Assistant (SA), to aid WSMR range schedulers to generate a daily schedule. The system provides resource conflict detection and resolution advice through a series of cooperating expert systems. Immediate advantages of the system are increased safety, insurance of proper schedule execution and improved speed for turnaround time of sudden schedule changes. Additional benefits of SA include: expandability as future operations grow, allows for rapid redeployment for changing resources, promotes efficient management of WSMR resources, provides a formal representation of knowledge such that years of range personnel experience is preserved and enables the flexibility of a scheduling aid as opposed to a rigid methodology. Prior development efforts by Perceptics have produced a sophisticated expert system development tool, called Knowledge Shaper, which was used to implement all of the expert systems. The development of SA included a library of routines (the SA toolbox) to permit the manipulation of internal data tables and define a data transfer protocol to and from the SA environment. The combination of Knowledge Shaper and the SA toolbox provide a powerful set of design tools for the development of future scheduling applications.

Fluid transport behaviour is of great importance within the chemical process industry and in biotechnology. The complexity of this behaviour, reflected in the nature of the fundamental partial differential equations which describe it analytically, means that it has to be treated by numerical methods. In this paper the basic equations are given, and the approaches necessary to treat laminar and turbulent flows are carefully explained. As digital computers have increased in size, so has the comprehensiveness of the problems which can be treated, and the development of typical computer programs is described. Problems of accuracy and experimental validation are also surveyed, and it is shown that recent developments in whole-field optical measurement methods, and image and data processing are all involved here. Then, a review of work at City University is shown to comprise typical examples of applications to engineering situations and biotechnology problems. Chosen instances of the former are flow and heat transfer behaviour for convective enhancement caused by roughness elements, and the design balancing of a thermosyphon. The latter include such diverse studies as blood flows in arterial bifurcations, and heat and mass transport in grain storage. They involve the three-dimensional and transient capabilities of current codes, and their applicability to non-standard geometries.

The 'concentric-aplanatic' method used for lens design is described in many papers. While many shapes and forms of these lenses have been shown, performance evaluation of these lenses has never been published. How good is the method? Can one design optical systems using this technique that have acceptable image quality? This paper will deal step by step with these questions, both from first principles and by the basis of third order theory. Performance evaluations will be given for the lenses designed.
