A new method for correcting comatic aberration in holographic optical
systems which uses constant optical path(COP) has been developed. The sum of
the optical path lengths from an object wavefront to an image wavefront remains
constant, and achromatic holographic systems can be easily calculated. Using COP,
a new focusing triplet was designed with wavelength tolerance of 9 nm for
entrance and exit numerical apertures of 0.5. This is 15 times larger than that
for conventional single holographic lens.

Many fundamental astronomical problems need much higher resolution than is afforded by atmospheric visibility or the diffraction limit of even the largest telescope being planned. The only way to meet these demands is by a distributed array of telescopes similar to those used in radio astronomy, or the long baseline stellar interferometry. China is planning to build a small-aperture long- baseline stellar optical interferometer for three purposes. One purpose is to clear up some problems before building a large and expensive interferometer. The second is to measure angular diameters of stars and angular distances between double stars. The third is to modify it for astrometry use in the future. In this paper, the design tolerance and specifications of the interferometer are discussed based on the astronomical requirements.

Laser induced damage to optical components severely limits the operating
fluence of high peak power lasers used for fusion research such as the Nova laser
at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In particular, surfaces and
optical thin films often damage at a lower fluence than bulk materials in large
aperture, high quality optics. We have designed and are fabricating new 94 cm
turning mirrors for Nova as part of the "Precision Nova" program to improve
beam quality. A new design has been optimized for updated optical performance
specifications including increased damage resistance. The new mirror design
will operate at all turning angles required by the ten Nova beamlines. This
flexibility reduces mirror inventory and fabrication cost. A process of
"conditioning" the mirror coating has been developed that is permanent and
increases the damage threshold by as much as a factor of 2-3x.

The Shack-Hartmann (S-N) wavefront sensor, which is derived from the classical Hartmann testing method, is one of the most convenient methods available for the optimal testing of telescopes on site on natural stars. It also has many applications in adaptive optics, active optics and CAM of optical mirror. The principle of the method is explained. Light from the tested source and from a reference source is collimated by a lens and incides upon an S-H plate which is a lens array. Each lenslet forms two point images. The distance between each pair of images reflects the angular aberration of the tested wavefront over the subaperture. A method of producing S-N plates with GRIN rod lenses is described. The experimental S-H plate has 10x10 GRIN rod lenses.

An update of the activities in the development of deep-space optical communications technology and systems design is described. The motivations for such a capability are presented in light of the new national priorities on planetary space exploration. A program to autonomously collect data on the joint visibility function of the atmosphere is described, followed by several of the newer technology developments. Two systems level demonstrations, one with the Galileo spacecraft and another originally proposed for the Cassini mission are then presented. The overall long range plan for deep-space optical communication development is also discussed.

developments in advanced computer integrated manufacturing technology, coupled with the
emphasis on Total Quality Management, are exposing needs for new techniques to integrate all
functions from design through to support of the delivered product. One critical functional area
that must be integrated into design is that embracing the measurement, inspection and test
activities necessary for validation of the delivered product.
This area is being tackled by a collaborative project supported by the UK Government
Department of Trade and Industry. The project is aimed at developing techniques for analysing
validation needs and for planning validation methods. Within the project an experimental
Computer Aided Validation Expert system (CAVE) is being constructed. This operates with a
generalised model of the validation process and helps with all design stages: specification of
product requirements; analysis of the assurance provided by a proposed design and method of
manufacture; development of the inspection and test strategy; and analysis of feedback data. The
kernel of the system is a knowledge base containing knowledge of the manufacturing process
capabilities and of the available inspection and test facilities.
The CAVE system is being integrated into a real life advanced computer integrated
manufacturing facility for demonstration and evaluation.
