The use of narrow band filters (NBF) to demonstrate various architectures for optical computing is currently of interest. We are performing a systematic search of standard narrow band filter/substrate designs for arrangements optimized with respect to several criteria;we are concerned with the variation of switching power and time with spacer layer thickness, overall reflectivity, and substrate thermal conductivity. Our coatings are evaporated in a dedicated box coater and are optically monitored with the help of a remote laser. Work on design and uniformity is in progress.

A null-lens design approach for centrally obscured components is described. This optimization method, which explicitly takes advantage of the obscuration, can achieve improved wavefront quality of the null test for a given level of lens complexity than a design approach that does not take advantage of the obscuration. The fabricated aspheric part, while likely to be different in shape from that predicted by the null test by a constant phase factor, will still allow satisfactory performance of the system.
The advantages of solid state laser scanning are explained and contrasted with the conventional software-intensive approach to machine vision. A new laser gauge design is described and applications are explored.

In this paper we describe the design and operation of a dynamically loaded scratch tester for making measurements of relative adhesive strength, and a modulated transmission ellipsometer for measuring total and internal strain. Optics Toolbox described in this paper is actually two programs in one: it is a powerful relational database system with twenty-one search parameters, four search modes, and multi-database support, as well as a first-order opticaldesign expert system with a rule interpreter which has full access to the relational database. The authors hope that Optics Toolbox can grow into a useful tool. For an industry that is losing its experts to retirement, Optics Toolbox could become a facility for keeping that knowledge in-house, and passing it on to junior designers. For design teams plagued with disorganization, Optics Toolbox could become a central filing system. And for the busy designer, Optics Toolbox can increase productivity by providing good starting points.

A satisfactory bifocal contact lens has not yet reached the marketplace because of deficiencies in the present designs. The two-zone concentric design allows both the near and far images to be present simultaneously, however the image quality is not very good. Recently several new bifocal contact lenses with multiple zones have been suggested. This paper presents computer calculations of the image quality of several of these new designs. The zone-plate design, with an intermediate blaze angle, gives the best image quality of the lenses that were examined.

Calculations of the reflectance, transmittance, Kerr magneto-optical polarization rotation, and related constants are important in the design of multilayer thin-film media for magneto-optical disks for data storage. Different computation methods have been suggested in the literature for specific structures. We have established a powerful technique based on matrix methods and have written a program to calculate all the optical responses of multilayer structures. Calculations for a few specific models have been made, and these predict Kerr rotation angles greater than 2 degree for normal incidence. These calculations can be readily extended to different media structures. Oblique incidence calculations are also being incorporated. We feel that disk media designs can be analyzed very effectively with this technique.
