With the low priority for R and D, research and development, for laser applications in medicine, it is surprising that any current report of progress could be developed. However, still in an all too limited phase, laser medicine continues in this country both for diagnosis and treatment other than for diseases of the eye. (Ref. 1, 2). Fortunately, there is increased activity both in laser biology and medicine in Europe and Russia at the present time. A laser cancer treatment institute has been established in Kiev, Russia. West Germany has plans to develop a laser institute of biology and medicine through the Gesllschaft fur Strahlen and Umweltforschung. So progress in this important field of laser applications will be continued at least, if not here. It is not recognized by those who have withdrawn funding for basic research that research in biology and medicine helps to develop programs for laser safety. With effective programs of laser safety, the field of applications of the laser has expanded and will continue to expand. Work in laser biology is necessary for progress in laser medicine.
Conventional optics normally includes only two types of elements: refractive and reflective. Holographic optics encompasses a third type of element;one whose properties are diffractive in nature. The focus of this pap...

Since the commercial introduction of the gas Laser in the early 1960's, various industries (not including pure scientific research) have attempted to adopt the coherent light source as a standard tool. By far, the most successful attempt to date has been the use of the low powered He-Ne Laser in the construction industry for alignment purposes. The properties of the He-Ne Laser makes it ideal for the construction industry: Relative Low Cost High Single-Mode Stability Portability--low input power requirement from 12 VDC source Ruggedness of design of Internal Mirror Plasma Tube In turn, the construction industry needs are ideal for low-powered He-Ne Lasers: Stable, Long Distance Reference Line Reference Line Not Requiring Operator Improved Accuracy Improved Efficiency

The development of the electro-optical image intensifier tube has created a need for new lens objectives uniquely designed for low-light-level applications,. Such lenses frequently resemble those intended for aerial reconnaissance purposes, but they have certain important design features that make them dif-ferent from their photographic counterparts.

For many years image tubes have been made which use semitransparent photocathodes to conveniently separate the optical and electro-optical functions. It is now possible to employ opaque photocathodes in image tubes having a special electromagnetic lens, without the use of special internal image forming optical lenses or mirrors. The design of this special electron-lens and measurements of some of its characteristics are discussed in succeeding sections.

The optical transfer function of an optical component such as a lens or image tube is of great importance because this one function, together with any scene entering the lens, can be used to predict the scene leaving the lens. The concept of the optical transfer function, which is the product of a phase transfer function and a modulation transfer function (MTF) has been well described in the literature (Ref. 1). The analogous situation in electronics is that of an arbitrary waveform entering a linear electronic black box. Armed only with the transfer function, the engineer can predict the output waveform in the following way: the input waveform is decomposed into its Fourier components, each component is multi-plied by the value of the transfer function at that frequency, and the result is summed over all frequencies. The transfer function changes the amplitude and shifts the phase of each Fourier component.

The ii international workshop on "Data Analysis in Astronomy" was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art and the trend in data analy sis and image processing in the context of their applications in Astronomy. The need for the organization of a second workshop in this subject derived from the steady. growing and development in the field and from the increasing cross-interaction between methods, technology and applications in Astronomy. The book is organized in four main sections: - Data Analysis Methodologies - Data Handling and Systems dedicated to Large Experiments - Parallel Processing - New developments The topics which have been selected cover some of the main fields in data analysis in Astronomy. Methods that provide a major contribution to the physical interpretation of the data have been considered. Attention has been devoted to the description of the data analysis and handling organization in very large experiments. A review of the current major satellite and ground based experiments has been included. At the end of the book the following 'Panel Discussions' are included: - Data Analysis Trend in optical and Radio Astronomy - Data Analysis Trend in X and Gamma Astronomy - Problems and Solutions in the design of Very Large Experiments - Trend on Parallel Processing Algorithms These contributions in a sense summarize the 'live' reaction of the audience to the various topics.

A disadvantage of optical holog raphy has been that the sensitivity to movement and the coherence requirements for hologram recording ordinarily lead to rather large and massive systems and/or lasers. In this paper we describe a portable hologram micro scope which uses a small, reliable pulsed ruby laser light source to overcome this disadvantage. This instrument was designed to record images of rough, diffusely reflecting surfaces with a resolution of 5 pm or better.

This book presents in a concise way the Mie theory and its current applications. It begins with an overview of current theories, computational methods, experimental techniques, and applications of optics of small particles. There is also some biographic information on Gustav Mie, who published his famous paper on the colour of Gold colloids in 1908. The Mie solution for the light scattering of small spherical particles set the basis for more advanced scattering theories and today there are many methods to calculate light scattering and absorption for practically any shape and composition of particles. The optics of small particles is of interest in industrial, atmospheric, astronomic and other research. The book covers the latest developments in divers fields in scattering theory such as plasmon resonance, multiple scattering and optical force.
