The theory of nondiffracting beam propagation and experimental evidence for nearly-nondiffractive Bessel beam propagation are reviewed. The experimental results are reinterpreted using simple optics formulas, which show that the observed propagation distances are characteristic of the optical systems used to generate the beams and do not depend upon the initial beam profiles. A set of simple experiments are described which support this interpretation. It is concluded that nondiffracting Bessel beam propagation has not yet been experimentally demonstrated.

We will discuss the trade-offs that allow GPUs to run up to thousands of cores in parallel and how those trade-offs effect the use of GPUs in opticaldesign software. The correction of phase aberrations in optical systems using an adaptive liquid crystal phase screen having 64 X 64 pixels is considered. These adaptive components have advantages over deformable mirror systems in that liquid crystal technology is relatively inexpensive and large pixelation densities can be achieved. In particular we address the application of these devices to astronomical adaptive optics. A simulator of the phase correction plate at work using time changing distorted wave fronts is described. Preliminary measurements of the optical flatness and response times of the prototype device are discussed.

Using the caustic merit function for plane waves incident upon a singlet lens, a comparison between the optical performance of the lens using an axial gradient index with spherical surfaces or aspheric surfaces with constant index material has been investigated.
