A new method for optical microscopy with super-resolution exceeding the Rayleigh limit was developed to observe the shape of particles contaminating the LSI patterned wafer in the far- field. The principle of the new method is as follows. The optical spot being smaller than the measured particles has to be scanned on the particle to measure the shape of particles on the wafer. The phase-shifting mask making small optical spot consists of the checkered mask which has been coated with a transparent layer patterned to ensure that the optical phases of the nearest apertures are opposite. The destructive interference between the two opposite phases of light waves from adjacent apertures cancels some diffraction effects and increases the spatial resolution, so that the size and resolution of the coherent laser spots can exceed the size limit of the Airy disk and resolution of Rayleigh limit. The new method for optical microscope with super resolution was examined theoretically and experimentally. The coherent beam generated from 15 mW He-Ne laser projected to the phase-shifting checkered mask forms small laser spots of which size are under 0.1 micrometers in diameter. It is clarified that in the far-field, the scattered light from two spots with opposite phases on the wafer can be observed in exceeding with Rayleigh limit.

Software is under development at Teledyne Brown engineering to represent a lens configuration as a y-ybar or Delano diagram. The program determines third-order Seidel and chromatic aberrations for each configuration. It performs a global search through all valid permutations of configuration space and determines, to within a step increment of the space, the configuration with smallest third-order aberrations. The program was developed to generate first-order optical layouts which promised to reach global minima during subsequent conventional optimization. Other operations allowed by the program are: add or delete surfaces, couple surfaces (for Mangin mirrors), shift the stop position, and display first-order properties and the optical layout (surface radii and thicknesses) for subsequent entry into a conventional lens-design program with automatic optimization. Algorithms for performing some of the key functions, not covered by previous authors, are discussed in this paper.

Interferometric measurements of real surfaces are combined with computed optical design analyses. To accomplish this, a special software interface driver was developed to accept serial optical Path Difference (OPD) data from a Zygo Mark iiI interferometer, apply standard algorithms, and convert the measured data into a CODE V readable file. Analysis was conducted on a large aperture developmental optical system containing a fold mirror of eggcrate construction. MTF performance of the entire system was computed as were the contributions of individual surfaces to overall optical quality. Diffraction effects due to the rib structure of the eggcrate mirror were apparent in this analysis, as were the effects of gravity and figure components of the wavefront. This hybrid analysis demonstrates the usefulness of coupling interferometry with an optical design program in the analysis of complex optical systems.

An all acousto-optic infrared scene projector (IRSP) has been developed for use in evaluating thermal-imaging guidance systems at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator (KHILS) facility located at Elgin AFB, Florida. The IRSP is a laser source based projector incorporating Scophony illumination and scanning methods to produce 96 X 96 pixel multi-wavelength images at very high frame rates (400 Hz). The IRSP is composed of five functionally similar optical trains, four of which are fed with a different `color' infrared laser. The separate scenes from each optical train are then combined and projected simultaneously into the imaging guidance system.

Data driven approaches have proven very efficient in many vision tasks and are now used for optical parameters optimization in application-specific camera design. A neural network is trained to estimate images or image quality indicators from the optical characteristics. The complexity and entanglement of such optical parameters raise new challenges we investigate in the case of wide-angle systems. We highlight them by establishing a data-driven prediction model of the RMS spot size from the distortion using mathematical or AI-based methods.

We have proposed and discussed that an introduction of the Faraday medium to the optical bistable devices brings new and good characteristics on the application to optical sensing. In this paper, characteristics of the optical bistability are analyzed theoretically for the optical bistable operation with the Faraday effect, the threshold power, and several parameter dependences of the characteristic. Consequently, by controlling them with an external magnetic field which is an operatable factor, the optical bistability shows much usefulness and effectiveness by the following points: the controllability of the bistable operation, the reduction in the threshold power, and the enlargement in the discontinuous power variation ratio.

Minimal refractive index data in the near-infrared spectrum are available for optical plastics. Typically, refractive index measurements are made by fabricating a prism of candidate optical material and using appropriate metrology equipment. Few plastics are available in thicknesses adequate to fabricate appropriate size prisms;however, almost all optical plastics can be acquired in a flat plate form. The investigation considered two fundamental approaches to measure the refractive index by (i) rotating a flat plate and measure the beam displacement and ( ii) measuring the optical focal shift. The rotation method was determined not accurate enough. An optical focal shift method optical(n = t(optical)/t(mechanical)) was developed that utilized existing laboratory equipment. The shift of focus when the plastic plate sample was inserted was located by determining the position of maximum contrast of the projection of a Ronchi ruling target when illuminated by flux from a Cary Eclipse covering the spectral range of 550-975 nm. The instrumentation, data processing, and measurement performance are presented.

The relationship between aberration and the aberration coefficient is the basic formulation in the field of aberration theory. A new approach to the fringe formation in the interference of light incident on a plane parallel plate is introduced. It is shown that for a particular angle of incidence, which depends only on the refractive index, the interfringes are minimum. It is proved that in an angular interval of few arc degrees around this particular incident angle the interfringes are equal to a high accuracy. It is shown that this feature can be exploited to produce an interference grating with an arbitrary transparent-to-opaque groove ratio, and to measure the wavelength of light and the fine structures of a spectrum with a precision considerably higher than can be obtained in the other similar interferometric methods.
