The traditional approach to optical system engineering separates the scene, optics, and detector as static entities, optimizing the design to meet subsystem specifications of aperture, field size, encircled energy, read noise, dynamic range, and other electro-optical properties. The Scene-Based Sensor Model (SBSM) represents a different approach by simulating the scene, optics and detector as a cohesive model using commercially available optical ray-tracing software. The objects are modeled as temporally changing entities, with characteristics including reflectance, absorbance, fluorescence, and scattering. Likewise, the detectors are modeled with their properties of temporal noise, spatial non-uniformity, nonlinear gain, and offset drift. The end-to-end simulation produces "photons-to-bits" analysis applicable to a variety of optical systems. First results are illustrated with ray tracing simulation of moving fluorescent objects and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy.

Conventional gauges cannot measure the effective width of complexly shaped plate edges. However, the gauge measures both side profiles of a plate and calculates the effective width with an accuracy of +/- 1.5 mm. The optomechanical engineering for mounting lenses and mirrors in imaging systems is frequently driven by the pointing or jitter requirements for the system. A simple set of rules was developed that allow the engineer to quickly determine the coupling between motion of an optical element and a change in the system line of sight. Examples are shown for cases of lenses, mirrors, and optical subsystems. The derivation of the stationary point for rotation is also provided. Small rotation of the system about this point does not cause image motion.

If the resulting optics is used in a larger spectral range we must correct not only the chromatic error of the conventional, refractive, part of the design but also of the DOE. Recently, a group of glasses has been investigated that have high refractive index and low dispersion. These glasses are known as reluctant glass formers and lie in the "forbidden" region of the conventional glass map. Research is continuing to develop means and techniques to produce usable sizes and optical characteristics. Since these glasses have unusual optical properties, a study was performed to gain an understanding of the impact such glasses could have on opticaldesign and to establish desired baseline optical properties as objectives for the material scientists. Several generic optical configurations were explored to determine if a meaningful improvement could be realized. Study results are presented and discussed to illustrate that a notable enhancement in optical performance is attainable.
