Individual stripe InGaAsP/lnP lasers emitting in a single spatial mode have been operated for times in excess of 7000 h at constant output power levels up to 40 mW (NA 0.5) with no significant increase in drive current and at 60 mW (NA 0.5) with drive current increases of typically 1.2%/1000h. Units have been operated short-term at values of output power and facet flux density of 263 mW and 20MW/cm2, respectively, and life-tested at a constant power of 90 mW (NA 0.5) for times in excess of 6300 h. These results demonstrate the resistance of this laser material to facet degradation, and show a clear advantage over GaAlAs/GaAs lasers of comparable structure which typically show catastrophic facet damage at flux densities of 2-4 MW/cm2.

currentdevelopments in thermal imaging in the 8-12 micron waveband are towards improving spatial and radiometric resolution. However, they will not reduce the initial or whole life cost. To significantly reduce costs the overall size must be reduced and significant savings made in three critical areas;detectors, cooling and optics. 3-5 micron quantum detection using a parallel or serial parallel scan is investigated which reduces cost in these areas by using inherently cheaper detectors with thermo electric cooling and low cost optics optimized for diamond machining using a reflecting single field of view telescope.

A slow-scan, cooled CCD camera system, similar to that used for astronomical observations, was constructed at Toulouse Observatory and used for testing CCD chips. Several devices were tested extensively. This paper describes the design and performance of some Thomson-CSF solid-state area-array CCD sensors. These sensors use a frame-transfer organization adapted to operate in a double-interlaced-field readout mode with a memory zone (sensor TH 7861) or adapted to operate in a single-field mode without a memory zone (sensors TH 7882, TH 7883, TH 7884). We briefly describe the system and the evaluation of the photometric performance of these chips, including quantum efficiency, readout noise, transfer efficiency, linearity, dark current, and field uniformity. Some projected developments of Thomson-CSF chips for scientific applications, such as the TH X31156 (1024 X1024 pixels) and the buttable TH 7882 (TH X31157), are also presented.
