Thus, opticaldesigners need account for gradient dispersion as well as gradient index. A dispersion model for the material must be readily available and opticaldesign programs must be capable of defining and maintaining this relationship before and during optimization, simplifying user input and confining the material to walk a well defined path on the glass map. Thinking in terms of lines on the glass map for arbitrary glass families yields a simple dispersion model based on least squares fitting of Buchdahl coefficients. This paper introduces the concept of glass lines and outlines a technique to construct a dispersion model for any contiguous family of gradient refractive material.

Non-imaging integrators which can be used for laser beam homogenization in materials processing with excimer laser radiation are analysed with regards to geometrical and statistical optics. A model for the transversal degree of coherence of the laser radiation is presented in order to estimate the performance of the integrating devices for the partially coherent excimer laser radiation. This is necessary for a more relevant design of those elements than a design by geometric optical means only. The concept of non-imaging integrators is enhanced by separating the multifaceted element from the focusing lens. This separation provides more flexibility in the processing distance of the optical system. A further enhancement is the combination of such a system with an imaging lens in order to create a system which produces a top hat fluence distribution with variable size for materials processing applications.

A fast (F/1.55) and wide-angle refractive camera objective has been developed to work with a large-size CCD on the focal plane of the spectrograph of Mont Megantique telescope for large spectral coverage from UV to VIS and up to NIR. The novel camera objective has been designed and optimized with three different glass combinations in order to have higher throughputs for large spectral coverage, especially in UV region. The tolerance analysis of the camera objective is given in the paper. The final opto-mechanical design of the objective is discussed with the consideration of the manufacturing tolerance in the optical and mechanical parts, as given in this paper. The used components have been minimized to reduce the light inherent lost. The optical testing results displayed the good optical performance of the camera with the required resolution for the whole FOV, as predicted by the optical simulation and computation. The broadband AR coating, enhanced on UV region, have been used on each surface of the lenses in the optical system.

The method is limited to spherical surfaces without decentrations. Separations and refractive indices of glasses are fixed. Ail curvatures of surfaces are indirectly determined in the final stage. The typical meridional aperture aberrations deal with aplanatic and achromatic conditions. Essence of the method relies on formulation functions which contain trigonometric expressions and are nested up to certain depth. In this paper, a new method used to calculate the Zernike coefficients of wave aberration from ray aberration and from finite shearing of wavefront is proposed. The simulated results are compared with the least squares fitting method, and indicate that the Zernike coefficients of wave aberration can be calculated as accurately with the new method as with the least squares fitting method, but with less computation and operation.

The installation of optical fibres for communication purposes is increasingly being carried out using a blowing technique. This study reviews the basis of the currentdesign methods for this technique and proposes a new method based on a more traditional fluid mechanics approach. The method is used to demonstrate how far optical fibres can be blown and the stress levels likely to be encountered by them at various positions within their journey. The method will allow for future technological developments to be simulated by allowing for air drag on the fibre and the constraining tube wall to be treated differently.
