In order to determine the vibration effects on performance in optical system, a simple vibratory model is proposed. The model suggested is compared with FE model. Both models are validated by modal tests for an existing simple optical system. The material properties of adhesive, which play an imported role in the vibratory model of an optical system, are found experimentally by using a simple test setup. The model suggested is used to investigate the dynamic behavior of the optical system under random vibration load conditions. It is concluded in this study that the analytical model suggested can successfully be used in preliminary design stage of simple optical systems when optical housing and lens behave rigidly in the frequency range of interest.

The theoretical expression for reflectance at a simple boundary between a dielectric, lossless incident medium and a medium with a finite extinction coefficient, however, takes no account of the sign of the extinction coefficient In such an arrangement, therefore, can the presence of gain possibly result in an enhanced reflectance? Opinions in the literature differ but tend to find enhancement beyond the critical angle and none below. This study examines both cases and shows that all results are in fact correct but they are not necessarily stable and it is their stability, or lack of it, that leads to the different results.

Recent advances in DNA sequencing techniques require the development of high NA immersion microscope systems with large field-of-view, increased resolution and very tight distortion correction. This paper discusses the opticaldesign and tolerance analysis of a NA 1.0 immersion microscope system with a field of view over 1 mm, which is to be used for four-color fluorescence spectroscopy. The microscope system includes an immersion objective lens and four tube lenses, and is corrected for a wide wavelength range from 490 nm to 712 nm. We will discuss critical aspects of designing this kind of optical system, including special glass selection required for chromatic correction.

This paper presents the theory for numerical evaluation of the spatial resolution along an optical axis of an optical microscope in case of oblique illumination. It considers the optical setup with a coherent light source, a microscope condenser, a grating located in a plane with an optical axis and with grating slits perpendicular to this axis and a microscope objective. It is proposed the analytical expression for calculation of the minimal resolvable period of this grating or the corresponded spatial cutoff frequency that characterizes the spatial resolution along the optical axis. It is demonstrated that this spatial cutoff frequency is not proportional to the angle of beam inclination. The proposed theory clearly explains why an optical microscope has the limited spatial resolution along an optical axis and how illumination can maximize this resolution.

The fluorescence of optical glasses is a property that needs to be taken into account in opticaldesigns for life science applications. Many optical glasses from SCHOTT show a very low intrinsic or auto-fluorescence. The fluorescence depends mainly on the applied excitation wavelength and the optical glass type. The fluorescence of optical glasses is usually defined as the quotient of the integral of the emission spectrum with the integral of the emission spectrum of a reference glass. This definition does not give any information about the actual quantum efficiency of the fluorescence. In this presentation recent data on the integral fluorescence of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented. Additionally, first measurements of the quantum efficiency of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented and compared to the standard method.

A fast (F/1.55) and wide-angle refractive camera objective has been developed to work with a large-size CCD on the focal plane of the spectrograph of Mont Megantique telescope for large spectral coverage from UV to VIS and up to NIR. The novel camera objective has been designed and optimized with three different glass combinations in order to have higher throughputs for large spectral coverage, especially in UV region. The tolerance analysis of the camera objective is given in the paper. The final opto-mechanical design of the objective is discussed with the consideration of the manufacturing tolerance in the optical and mechanical parts, as given in this paper. The used components have been minimized to reduce the light inherent lost. The optical testing results displayed the good optical performance of the camera with the required resolution for the whole FOV, as predicted by the optical simulation and computation. The broadband AR coating, enhanced on UV region, have been used on each surface of the lenses in the optical system.

The installation of optical fibres for communication purposes is increasingly being carried out using a blowing technique. This study reviews the basis of the currentdesign methods for this technique and proposes a new method based on a more traditional fluid mechanics approach. The method is used to demonstrate how far optical fibres can be blown and the stress levels likely to be encountered by them at various positions within their journey. The method will allow for future technological developments to be simulated by allowing for air drag on the fibre and the constraining tube wall to be treated differently.

Non-imaging integrators which can be used for laser beam homogenization in materials processing with excimer laser radiation are analysed with regards to geometrical and statistical optics. A model for the transversal degree of coherence of the laser radiation is presented in order to estimate the performance of the integrating devices for the partially coherent excimer laser radiation. This is necessary for a more relevant design of those elements than a design by geometric optical means only. The concept of non-imaging integrators is enhanced by separating the multifaceted element from the focusing lens. This separation provides more flexibility in the processing distance of the optical system. A further enhancement is the combination of such a system with an imaging lens in order to create a system which produces a top hat fluence distribution with variable size for materials processing applications.

Freeform technology is one of the most promising solutions for enhancing the capability of aberration correction and improving performance of optical systems. Aiming to demonstrate the freedom and flexibility of optical system design, several challenging design examples using freeform surface are presented, including two wide-angle camera lenses adopting even and odd pedal polynomial formulations for symmetric optical surface description, and an anamorphic cinema lens employing non-rotationally symmetric surfaces for capturing a wider aspect ratio and offering a 1.33 x squeeze factor on a 4:3 sensor size. Methods and constraints for designing and optimizing the optical systems are discussed. The optical performances of these design examples are analyzed and the results verify the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed formulations and design strategies in the field of freeform imaging opticaldesign.

Our study presents recent progress in modelling and performing lens opticaldesign with metasurfaces. We developed semi-analytical models that recover the output phase, polarization, dispersion and group delay of various nanostructures. This enables the mixing of different nanostructures to obtain a target dispersion profile an interesting application of the model. These models can readily be implemented within opticaldesign software such as Zemax and use the built-in optimization of opticaldesign processes while avoiding time-consuming electrodynamics computation. We also introduce the metasurfaces to the analytical lens design framework. This enables us to analytically compute the phase profile of freeform metasurface doublet concerning particular ray conditions such as the Abbe Sine condition as we presented here.
