This paper investigates the problem of interpolating, under physical constraints, 3-D vector fields from sample vectors at irregular positions. This problem arises from analysis of fluid motion, but our results can also be used in such areas as geometric modeling, data approximation, and the analysis of other types of nonrigid motion. The algorithm proposed in this paper combines the generalized multivariate quadratic interpolation and physical constraints into one step to form an over-determined linear equation system. The least squares solution of this system gives the coefficients of interpolation. Since the interpolation is done in one step and is noniterative, it is computationally efficient. We utilize the methods in robust statistics to detect outliers in the sample data so that the result remains stable in the presence of gross errors. Another merit of our scheme is that by incorporating physical constraints into linear equation system, the algorithm takes into account the characteristics of vector field and is much less sensitive to noise. The algorithm is applied to both synthesized and real data representing 3-D fluid vector field. With the application to 3-D fluid flow in mind, we study the applicability of physical constraints in fluid kinematics and analyze the sources of noise from the real data acquisition. A comparison between our algorithm with previous work shows the robustness of our algorithm. The results of interpolating real flow data are presented.

MRI data were collected from normal control subjects and from patients having AIDS or closed head injury (CHI). Both T1-weighted and T2-weighted images were collected; in some cases transverse images were made, while in others coronal images were collected. The images were analyzed in three ways, each of which determined white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and CSF volume, and the results were compared. Segmentation by interactive threshold selection or manual outlining is still the most commonly used method for compartment volume analysis. This method was applied to the control and AIDS brains, with repetition by two trained observers. These results were compared with those from a second method in which each voxel is viewed statistically as a mixture of whichever two compartments are closest at that anatomical location. Automatic thresholding, followed by regional skeletonization, is used to identify a small set of pixels in each slice that represent the central portion of each of the three regions of interest. All pixels in the slice are then subjected to an interpolation procedure in which their fractional composition is determined from these three intensity values. The intensities from the T1-weighted images show contrast between GM, WM, and CSF, and these are used for the volume computation. Geometric information from the T2-weighted image is used for the location of the authentic compartment locations, as these images show strong contrast between the CSF and the skull. The third method studied is based on a three-dimensional region-growing algorithm that estimates each volume compartment by growing a volume from a seed point, limiting the growth based on spatial and feature criteria. The feature bounds are set restrictively so that GM, WM, and CSF regions are not contiguous, leaving a volume of mixed voxels between the regions. The distributions of intensities in each region are then used to interpolate the most likely composition of the unassigned voxels, so

computer vision faces the challenge of exploiting the CAD models available for many manufactured objects. Recently, a variety of new algorithms have been developed that rely on symbolic object representations for recognizing curved three-dimensional objects from images. This paper presents a modelling system for constructing these representations from parametric and implicit algebraic surface specifications. A combination of homotopy continuation and curve tracing is used to compute set operations. Specifically, an algorithm for tracing curves defined implicitly in IRn+1 by n polynomial equations in n + 1 variables is presented which correctly characterizes the topology of the intersection curves and respects singular points. The curve tracing algorithm is also used to render line drawings for which parametric representations of occluding contours are unavailable. Hidden lines are easily removed by explicitly constructing an image structure graph of the smooth curve branches and singular points;it is then sufficient to trace a ray at a single point on each curve branch. A preliminary parallel implementation, distributed over a network of SPARC stations, appears promising. For objects modeled by this system, algorithms for constructing their aspect graph, computing their stable poses and recognizing them in different types of images have been developed. © 1992 SPIE. A sub-image-element (imel) model is developed for boundary-based measurements. Using Laplacian-Of-Gaussian operators in combination with a facet model, boundary points in an image are detected with sub-imel accuracy. A boundary trace of these points is inferred using the methods of curvature consistency. From the boundary trace, separate boundaries are identified and analyzed. Types of measurements extracted include whether a boundary is open or closed, its length (area in 3-D), average curvature and bending energy. For display, boundaries are modeled with Bezier curves/surfaces and plotted/rendered with graphics tools. This method is also designed to directly process anisotropically sampled images. © 1992 IEEE.

The work reported here is an integral part of a system developed for the automated reconstruction of arbitrary-shaped physical objects using vision systems, three dimensional computer graphics, and B-Spline surface approximation techniques. Digitized planar contour points are automatically fitted in the image and world space to define a minimum number of B-Spline control points using least-squares approximation techniques. The final set of points represent the B-Spline control net of the entire surface of the object. The resulting curves and surfaces can be further interactively modified until a satisfactory fit is obtained. Three parametrization techniques, viz., uniform, chord length, and affine invariant angle method are implemented and adjusted to their local minima using the Newton-Raphson iteration method. The effect of each method on the accuracy of the reconstructed surface is discussed. The techniques were tested using a clay model of a human face. The uniform parametrization performed better with the highest speed of convergence and best least-squares error characteristics. On the other hand, it was less effective in detecting sharp corners as compared to the other two methods. The results also show that there is a minimum number of control points for every surface beyond which there is no error improvement. This is useful in several industrial applications when checking surface accuracy of manufactured parts using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).

Since its genesis more than thirty-five years ago, the field of computer vision has been known by various names, including pattern recognitions, image analysis, and image understanding. The central problem of computer vision is obtaining descriptive information by computer analysis of images of a scene. Together with the related fields of image processing and computer graphics, it has become an established discipline at the interface between computer science and electrical engineering. This volume contains fourteen papers presented at the AMS Special Session on Geometry Related to computer vision, held in Hoboken, New Jersey in October 1989. This book makes the results presented at the Special Session, which previously had been available only in the computer science literature, more widely available within the mathematical sciences community. Geometry plays a major role in computer vision, since scene descriptions always involve geometrical properties of, and relations among, the objects or surfaces in the scene. The papers in this book provide a good sampling of geometric problems connected with computer vision. They deal with digital lines and curves, polygons, shape decompositions, digital connectedness and surfaces, digital metrics, and generalizations to higher-dimensional and graph-structured “spaces.” Aimed at computer scientists specializing in image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition—as well as mathematicians interested in applications to computer science—this book will provide readers with a view of how geometry is currently being applied to problems in computer vision.
