Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are increasingly becoming part of organizations' digitalization efforts in many different domains. CPS are characterized by their heterogeneity and complexity, thus requiring the involvement of various experts throughout development. digital Twins (DTs) were found to facilitate the acquisition of such technical knowledge required for effective designs. In particular, we pose that process-oriented model representations can help to account for various concerns (e.g.: privacy and security) across CPS components in a human-centered way, thereby enabling the active participation of relevant actors in requirements elicitation and design exploration. Our human-centered approach uses digital Process Twins (DPTs) for eliciting and refining requirements for CPS design, and for supporting agile CPS development. Our ongoing project follows the design science method. We demonstrate results of the first design cycle and provide an example illustrating the modeling part of our methodology.

The operation of ground support vehicles in busy airport taxiways and runways is a growing concern, especially when the driver does not have an adequate field of view (FoV). Airport ground vehicle accidents due to vision obstruction have resulted in loss of revenue, injuries, and fatalities. The research presented in this paper examines and quantifies vision obstruction in airport ground support vehicles using an early design methodology based on digital human modeling (DHM). The methodology is presented through investigating two case studies based on actual airport accidents influenced by vision obstruction, involving pushback tractors and an aircraft refueling truck. Each study comprises three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) models of the vehicles and four DHM manikins with varying anthropometries. Obstruction-causing vehicle elements are identified, and then the CAD models are redesigned to improve the driver's forward FoV. Results from this study show that DHM can facilitate a proactive design approach by pinpointing potential hazards in the design of ground vehicles by retrofitting changes during early-phase design via digital models to reduce the risk of driver vision obstruction.

The advent of digital engineering practices across industries and defense organizations has created a need for graduating engineers to acquire skills in conceptualizing and creating digital models that capture the lifecycle of the product, system, or service of interest. The transition from traditional document-based models to digital models requires training in modeling languages and modeling methods to apply model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools and techniques. These pillars are essential to designing digital models and employing a systems-thinking framework. digital engineering skills focusing on MBSE topics are currently not widely available in undergraduate or graduate programs. We propose a modular approach for integrating these topics in a set of core courses in the second and third years of the engineering curriculum, building incremental skills across this two-year period, and leading to their application in capstone design projects in the final year. The modules are drawn from a recently implemented digital engineering graduate certificate for training a civilian Air Force cohort. This twelve-credit certificate included four semester-long courses in: (i) Systems, Models and Simulation for digital engineering;(ii) Model-Based Systems engineering;(iii) Cyber-Physical Systems and Simulation;and (iv) Data-Driven Decision-Making and Risk Management. The modules are hosted on an online learning and course management system. Each module includes an experiential learning project that supports designing use cases with relevant stakeholders, conducting interviews with non-engineering domain-experts and end users of the system or creating digital models using systems modeling languages such as the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) and the Systems modeling Language (SysML). In the context of highly customized industrial applications, human-machine collaboration systems merge the efficiency and precision of collaborative robots with the adaptability and complex decision-making capabilities of humans. This integration adeptly addresses intricate manufacturing tasks that demand high sensitivity and adaptability. However, the virtual Commissioning of human-machine collaborative design schemes prior to the establishment of such systems presents challenges. These include integrating diverse heterogeneous components, the absence of a unified standard for modeling, and the need for dynamic adjustments to design schemes to enhance Commissioning efficiency across multiple engineers. Moreover, in manufacturing environments where cost and efficiency are critical, there is a demand for lightweight collaborative Commissioning tools that can swiftly resolve issues. To address these challenges, this paper leverages AML standardized modeling capabilities to develop a human-machine collaborative digital twin construction methodology. This methodology is based on meta models, meta-actions, and configurable meta processes. Furthermore, it introduces a granular progressive loading algorithm designed for a cloud-edge operational mode, which, when coupled with multi-view classification techniques, fulfills the requirements of lightweight collaboration in platforms such as web browsers/IPAD/Augmented Reality. The approach is ultimately validated through a case study focusing on battery pack wiring harness assembly units within the new energy battery sector.

Although many interior vehicle components, including seats, steering wheels, and mirrors, are commonly adjustable in modern cars, many drivers and passengers still experience a poor occupant-vehicle fit. Subpopulations such as short, tall, and pregnant occupants encounter comfort- and safety-related concerns in the form of increased risk of airbag injury, a lack of legroom, and inadequate abdomen-steering wheel clearance. Despite the fact that pedal placement is a crucial factor that directly impacts a driver’s choice of seating position, pedal adjustability is only featured in a limited selection of modern vehicles. The early design approach proposed in this research work uses digital human modeling (DHM) to assess improvements to automotive occupant packaging as a result of implementing adjustable pedals. Three case studies are presented, depicting "what-if" scenarios that analyze clearance, clash, and pedal reach in generic, low-fidelity computer-aided design (CAD) vehicle models with short, tall, and pregnant occupants. The results of this study demonstrate how adjustable pedals benefit occupants and highlight how DHM can be used proactively to improve occupant-vehicle fit in the early design phases. © 2024 by ASME.

modeling from the perspectives of software engineering and systems engineering have co-evolved over the last two decades as orthogonal approaches. Given the central role of software in modern cyber-physical systems and the increasing adoption of digital engineering practices in complex systems design, there is now significant opportunity for collaborative design among system users, software developers, and systems engineers. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and systems modeling languages can support seamless cross-domain connectivity for design, simulation, and analysis of emerging technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR). This paper presents a co-design process for extending the capability of an existing AR application referred to as a No-Code AR Systems (NCARS) framework. NCARS enables content developed by multi-domain authors to be deployed on AR devices through a software layer that bridges the content to the game engine that drives the AR system. Utilizing a software dependency diagram of the AR Annotation function, an existing MBSE model of the AR system is extended to include the structure and behavior of relevant software components. This allows a modular design of the system to address needs in integrating new requirements into the existing application. New user requirements for tracking items in motion in the user's physical environment with virtual annotations in the augmented space are collaboratively designed and visualized through use case, block definition, internal block, and sequence diagrams. They capture the required structure and behavior of the proposed to-be system.

Power system is the largest, most complex, capital and technology-intensive artificial composite system in all industrial systems in the world so far, and is one of the most important achievements in the history of the science of human engineering. Considering safety and stability, the design and management of power systems are becoming increasingly important. With the breakthrough in network technology, information technology, modeling, and optimization technology, digital twins are expected to be applied in practical systems to solve the problems mentioned above. The proposed framework follows a front-end and back-end separation approach, providing support for seamless integration with web pages, mini programs, and mobile apps through plug-in access. This unified framework offers a comprehensive set of functionalities, including status synchronization, parameter tuning, web-based algorithm design, visual configuration of customized user interfaces, and real-time control using online digital twin control strategies. This paper contributes to the design and implementation of a unified and adaptable online digital twin framework that covers the entire control system process for thermal power plants. Through a case study conducted on an operational thermal unit, it is demonstrated that the implemented online digital twin framework can effectively support various daily management and training tasks.

The field of landscape architecture and planning urgently requires the use of visualization and intelligent technologies to optimize traditional design processes. In response to the digital landscape planning needs, this research has designed and implemented a digital landscape planning system based on visualization technology. Through the development of visualization techniques, system framework design, and the implementation of key technologies, we have developed an integrated landscape planning system that combines digital scene modeling, interactive design, and intelligent planning optimization. The research has verified that the system achieves a high level of fidelity in digital scene representation and demonstrates effective human-computer interaction. The system enables the rapid construction of highly faithful digital landscape scenes, assisting designers in creative design and proposal assessment. Additionally, it leverages knowledge rules and successful cases to facilitate interactive intelligent optimization of landscape design proposals. The goal of this research is to develop a digital landscape planning system that integrates digital scene construction and intelligent design optimization. This research provides valuable technological support and practical implementation for the intelligent and digital transformation of landscape planning, contributing to innovation in the field. © 2024 SPIE.

Several publications claim positive effects of learning videos - in addition to indications of increased motivation among learners, studies suggest that learning performance can be increased [1-3]. With a focus on digital transformation, this paper will consider a self-study-video in the field of university education. The content of the investigated self-study-video is a central model of occupational safety: the design model of protective measures. The presented short intervention was designed as self-study-video based on an existing textbook chapter. Besides the evaluation of design elements, it was investigated which effects learning videos may have on the motivation and learning performance of students learning the design model. Students of the University of Wuppertal were the sample for the intervention. The study population were Safety engineering students, who visit the lecture "basics of occupational safety". Ninety students attended all steps of the experiment (treatment group n = 44;textbook-group n = 46). The self-study-video has a significant effect on the increase of knowledge and the video-group seems to be more successful than the textbook-group in the post-test. However, the self-study-video is not as motivating as expected, caused by the design of the self-study-video with a computer-generated voice.

While the engineering of digital twins (DTs) of cyber-physical systems already faces a number of challenges, DTs of socio-technical systems are made even more complex by human and social factors, and a comprehensive representation of their internal relations is currently lacking. DTs for socio-technical systems could open up new ways of achieving common societal goals by i) providing an understanding of complex interactions and processes, and by ii) facilitating the design of and participation in collective actions. In this context, dynamic adaptation and motivational strategies would be required to swiftly address sub-optimal system behavior. To enable the model-driven engineering of DTs responding to such requirements, we propose a conceptual model of socio-technical systems and discuss it with use-case scenarios. The presented approach supports our vision of future DT-based model-driven interventions, empowering citizens and stakeholders in driving societal change and increasing community resilience.
