The ability of human observers to detect low-contrast targets in screen-film (SF) images, computed radiographic (CR) images, and compressed CR images was measured using contrast detail (CD) analysis. The results of these studies were used to design a two- alternative forced-choice (2AFC) experiment to investigate the detectability of nodules in adult chest radiographs. CD curves for a common screen-film system were compared with CR images compressed up to 125:1. Data from clinical chest exams were used to define a CD region of clinical interest that sufficiently challenged the observer. From that data, simulated lesions were introduced into 100 normal CR chest films, and forced-choice observer performance studies were performed. CR images were compressed using a full-frame discrete cosine transform (FDCT) technique, where the 2D Fourier space was divided into four areas of different quantization depending on the cumulative power spectrum (energy) of each image. The characteristic curve of the CR images was adjusted so that optical densities matched those of the SF system. The CD curves for SF and uncompressed CR systems were statistically equivalent. The slope of the CD curve for each was - 1.0 as predicted by the Rose model. There was a significant degradation in detection found for CR images compressed to 125:1. Furthermore, contrast-detail analysis demonstrated that many pulmonary nodules encountered in clinical practice are significantly above the average observer threshold for detection. We designed a 2AFC observer study using simulated 1-cm lesions introduced into normal CR chest radiographs. Detectability was reduced for all compressed CR radiographs.

In this research we have developed a methodology for integrating design and finite element analysis, with special emphasis on design. System performance goals are translated into local performance goals based on generic physical principles. A complete search of the design domain may not be possible due to its size and not realistic due to time-to-market pressures. Furthermore, the complexity and non-linearity of the design domain prohibit a qualitative comparison of design configurations without design instantiation and evaluation. The use of a "pruning" process of the configuration design space is highly desirable since it provides the means of selecting a single candidate configuration having the greatest potential for success. Therefore, an approach is used in which design configurations are parameterized from a product knowledge base through the use of a library of design templates. The design process involves an enumeration of candidate design templates and domain-specific automated procedures for finite element mesh generation. Through exploitation of domain-dependent knowledge, FEA solution accuracy requirements are defined. Quantitative behavior is then inferred from numerical results. The objective of this project was to streamline the in-process verification of 2D sheetmetal parts by providing a vision based inspection workstation and software applications for the inspection planner. The goal was to develop an interactive inspection planning application which reads an IGES file representing an unfolded blank, and automatically generates inspection plans and setup instructions for the inspection workstation. The inspection workstation automatically executes llic inspection plan and generates an inspection report for the part. The workstation and planning applications were successfully demonstrated for a family of sheetmetal features including holes, slots, rectangles, hexagons, keyholes, and patterns. The task of design synthesis can be accomplished by human beings because of their ability to take into account the physics of the problem, past experience, and to evaluate a number of alternatives to determine the best compromise design. This paper illustrates a system that automates this procedure for injection mold design, and more specifically, gating design. The gating plan synthesis system described in this paper, automatically determines an initial gating configuration based on a features representation of the part and a knowledge-base that captures some of the design rules used in practice. A Feature modeling Utility (FMU), a Topology and Geometry Utility System (TAGUS), and an automatic mesh generator, OCTREE, are used to identify and query features and to perform geometric reasoning about the part. The methodology used, implementation details, and examples of test cases are presented.

This paper describes two expert systems designed to assist in matching personnel to positions within a company. The first system was developed and implemented at digital Equipment Corporation. The second is part of an on-going research project begun by the authors in 1969 involving cognitive modeling of strategic management and other management processes. A number of expert systems are being developed to aid in human resources management. One such system, the first described in this paper, has been developed and implemented at digital Equipment Corporation to help deal with changing skill requirements for manufacturing personnel. The discussion of this system focuses on the problems of implementing KBS in large corporate environments. The second system described is in the prototype stage. It focuses on staffing a knowledge-based system development effort-specifically, making knowledge engineer assignment decisions for particular KBS projects.< >

KINFIDA (knowledge-based intelligent filter design assistant), a hybrid knowledge-based system with a model-based reasoning architecture for digital filter design, is described. It extends the concept of an isolated digital signal processing CAD tool and provides a closed-loop design environment where the system expertise can grow incrementally with minimal effect on the controls and the reasoning process. It utilizes IEEE signal processing libraries and is implemented in Nexpert Object, a commercial object-rule-based development system. The user interface is implemented using the X11 toolkit package. Using an interactive human interface, KINFIDA suggests likely filter approaches, estimates undetermined parameters, provides performance estimates, and suggests candidate VLSI technologies satisfying a desired filtering operation.< >
