In general manufacturing consists of a sequence of actions on different spots. Depending on the sequence, workers may have to approach a spot from varying angles. The purpose of the study conducted was to describe the whole-body orientation and position when approaching a spot for a manufacturing action from five different angles, starting several meters away. Eight subjects were instructed to perform three different actions (knob rotating, pneumatic wrenching, and button pressing) at six working height s (between ankle height and eye height). The actions were selected for their varying level of constraint at the subject-environment interface. Amongst others, it was disclosed that there is a linear relationship between the final whole-body orientation (while performing the action) and the initial approach angle (while being on the starting position, directed to the manufacturing spot). Furthermore, a translation effect was found, showing that, when approaching from the right side, right-handed subjects position themselves more to the left of the straight line between their initial position and the spot for the manufacturing action. The results of the study may be used for proactive ergonomic assessments of manufacturing environments, allowing the user of a digital human model to accurately and efficiently be able to simulate realistic human motions and action sequences. The purpose of this research is to develop a system for virtual ergonomic assessment of products without real subjects and physical mockups by integrating a digital hand model with a product model. In previous work, we developed functions of a semi-automatic grasp planning for the digital hand and of quantitatively evaluating the grasp stability of the product based on the force-closure and the grasp quality in our system. We also confirmed the validity of the results from these functions by comparing them with the real grasp postures. However, only evaluating the grasp stability could not necessarily derive the appropriate grasp postures. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a new function of evaluating "ease of grasping (EOG)" for the grasp posture based on EOG-map constructed from principal component analysis for finger joint angles in real subjects' grasps. We also developed another function of optimizing the grasp posture to avoid inappropriate postures by evaluating the posture similarity on EOG-map in the system. Copyright © 2007 SAE International.

Exposure of a driver to vehicle vibration is known to disrupt manual performances, and more specifically affect the speed and accuracy of reaching tasks associated with vehicle operation. The effects of whole body vibration (WBV) can be analyzed as a function of the vibration characteristics of each body link. This information can then be used to identify movement strategies and predict biodynamic responses. Conceptual principles derived from the understanding of human behavior in a vibratory environment can then be used for the design of controls or interfaces adapted for vehicle operation in this context. The transfer functions of individual upper body links were estimated to investigate their biodynamic properties as a function of vehicle vibration frequency and spatial location of targets to be reached. In the present study, fourteen seated participants performed pointing movements to eight targets distributed in the right hemisphere. WBV generated by a ride motion simulator (RMS) consisted of vertical and horizontal sinusoidal displacement of a vehicle cab at 2 Hz, 4 Hz, or 6 Hz. The results obtained for a subset of experimental conditions (vertical vibration, 5 selected targets) show that the transfer functions of the torso, upper arm, and lower arm-hand vary as a function of vibration frequency and target location. A 32-week pregnant 5th percentile female occupant model was developed. The uterus with fetus, amniotic fluid, placenta, fat, and ligaments, etc. was modeled by finite element methods, and it was integrated into MADYMO facet 5th percentile female occupant model. The model was validated via abdominal response corridors under belt loading and bar loading. It was used to study the strain of the uterine wall where the placental is contacted during car crash accidents, for the placental abruption is one of the major risks to the fetus. The simulation results show that the traditional 3-pt belt may not provide good protection for the fetus due to large strain can be found during car crash. So, two kinds of new belts were presented. They use different kinds of sheets to enwrap the protuberant abdomen of the pregnant female occupant in order to decrease the movement of the uterus relatively to the body. Thus, the strain of the uterine wall can be decreased significantly. Some other methods also were studied in the paper, such as using a knee-belt or a knee-bolster to decrease the movement of the whole body of the pregnant female occupants. Better protection performance may be obtained by using these methods. Copyright © 2007 SAE International.

In applications ranging from design of customized vehicle interiors to virtual testing of biomedical devices, the processes of modeling, design and analysis involve the simultaneous treatment of artifacts (i.e., parts designed by humans) and anatomical structures. An inherent conflict arises because the geometric descriptions are completely different. Artifact descriptions are typically the output of computer-aided design (CAD) software and consist of a collection of parametric patches that comprise the boundary of the artifact. In stark contrast, the native description of an anatomical structure typically consists of an image stack obtained using a volumetric scanning technology such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Current practice for simultaneously dealing with both categories of entities involves working primarily in the world of CAD. The scanner data must be processed to determine segmentation (i.e., to decide which voxel belongs to each object of interest), and then the segmented results are converted to traditional boundary representation (b-rep) CAD models. However, the CAD models consist of such large numbers of triangles (often on the order of 106 or 107) that performing standard CAD operations becomes problematic. Most traditional CAD systems are designed to deal with environments composed of at most 1000's of individual objects with tens of thousands of individual surfaces (beyond which many CAD systems- performance is so slow as to have effectively failed).The question then arises whether forcing everything into the traditional CAD environment is really the best approach. If anatomical structures have more complicated geometry than CAD artifacts, does it make sense to work with anatomy in the CAD environment? Seat design and utilization of carry over seat systems may limit the ability of the seat system to absorb energy during impact. For this reason, head restraints are being designed to meet new safety standards through the relationship to the occupant's head. With the head restraint being designed to meet safety guidelines, comfort criteria may be sacrificed. Industry feedback indicates that small females are more negatively affected by the head restraint designs that meet the new safety standards. Studies indicate that many occupants do not adjust the head restraint at all, leading to the question should the head restraint sacrifice comfort to meet safety requirements [1, 10]? There were two goals established for this study. First, determine the percentage of occupants who do adjust the head restraint and to what height. Second, simulating various occupant postures in Jack, determine if a predictive value or posture can be created to aid in head restraint designs that meet safety and comfort requirements. Data were collected over a five-day period, in a Compact Utility Vehicle (CUV), from 73 female and 17 male participants. Of all 90 participants only 35% adjusted their head restraint. 90% of the participants would have been able to adjust the head restraint to a safe height based on the center of gravity of the head and the adjustment range of the head restraint. A positive correlation between backset and seated height exists for only the large female, medium male, and large male sample sizes. When simulated in Jack, neither the CAD simulated backset measurement, nor the recorded participants' backsets, were predicted by the driving postured manikin. Copyright © 2007 SAE International.

Aimed at digital heritage protecting engineering of Chinese national music, this thesis discusses the topic of music features recognition technology by simulating human's cognitive process based on MIDI files, mainly including such high-level features recognition technologies as melody extraction, music section recognition and partition, and emotion recognition. At last, the prototype system of virtual editor and exhibition for Chinese national music by means of aforementioned technologies are developed to serve for digital popularising of Chinese national music

We welcome you to the First International conference on Arts and Technology (ArtsIT 2009), hosted by CSIE of the National Ilan University and co-organized by the National Science Council, ICST, College of EECS at National Ilan University, Software Simulation Society in Taiwan, ISAC, TCA, NCHC, CREATE-NET, and Institute for Information Industry. ArtsIT2009 was held in Yilan, Taiwan, during September 24–25, 2009. The conference comprised the following themes: • New Media Technologies (Evolutionary systems that create arts or display art works, such as tracking sensors, wearable computers, mixed reality, etc. ) • Software Art (Image processing or computer graphics techniques that create arts, including algorithmic art, mathematic art, advanced modeling and rend- ing, etc. ) • Animation Techniques (2D or 3D computer animations, AI-based animations, etc. ) • Multimedia (Integration of different media, such as virtual reality systems, audio, performing arts, etc. ) • Interactive Methods (Vision-based tracking and recognition, interactive art, etc. ) The conference program started with an opening ceremony, followed by three keynote speeches and four technical sessions distributed over a period of two days. Two poster sessions, one hour each, were scheduled before the afternoon oral sessions. An Int- active Arts exhibition was held in conjunction with ArtsIT 2009. Twelve well-known digital arts teams from Taiwan exhibited 15 artworks in this event, including 10 int- active installation arts, 4 video arts, and 1 digital print. The conference received around 50 submissions from 15 different countries.
