Collective intelligence (CI) is an emerging research field which aims at combining human and machine intelligence, to improve community processes usually performed by large groups. CI systems may be collaborative, like Wikipedia, or competitive, like a number of recently established problem-solving companies that attempt to find solutions to difficult R&D or marketing problems drawing on the competition among web users. The benefits that CI systems earn user communities, combined with the fact that they share a number of basic common characteristics, open up the prospect for the design of a general methodology that will allow the efficient development and evaluation of CI. In the present work, an attempt is made to establish the analytical foundations and main challenges for the design and construction of a generic collective intelligence system. First, collective intelligence systems are categorized into active and passive and specific examples of each category are provided. Then, the basic modeling framework of CI systems is described. This includes concepts such as the set of possible user actions, the CI system state and the individual and community objectives. Additional functions, which estimate the expected user actions, the future state of the system, as well as the level of objective fulfillment, are also established. In addition, certain key issues that need to be considered prior to system launch are also described. The proposed framework is expected to promote efficient CI design, so that the benefit gained by the community and the individuals through the use of CI systems, will be maximized. The reconstruction of accurate freeform surface models of 3D scanned objects is a common task encountered in creating virtual reality environments for anatomical reconstruction, cartography, cultural artifact modeling, digital archaeology, infrastructure renewal, and computer-aided design. Difficulties occur in reconstructing smooth surfaces from these scanned data sets because the acquired data is very large and is often infiltrated with scanning errors. For surface reconstruction, visualization, and interactive virtual modeling, it is necessary to reduce the amount of raw scanned data. Many existing data simplification techniques are complex and not directly applicable to spline-based surface models. A novel two stage contour-based data simplification algorithm is introduced in this paper and applied to facial surface reconstruction, which may be used for human modeling for computer games or model creation for virtual museums. The first stage extracts a series of equally spaced sectioned contours directly from a dense 3D data points. In the second stage, each extracted contour is redefined as a cubic B-spline curve by reduced number of control points defined by a user defined reduction ratio. A lofted surface is finally created from these reconstructed contours. The effectiveness of the synthetic surface reconstruction algorithm is demonstrated using its deviation values from its original point cloud data set. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm generates a fairly accurate spline based facial model with only 5-20% of the actual scanned data, based upon the surface complexity. Performance can be improved by increasing the number of extracted contours, followed by a greater reduction ratio in the second data simplification stage.

This paper explores the use of SAT-Modulo Theory in determination of bit-widths for finite precision implementation of numerical calculations, specifically in the context of scientific computing where division frequently occurs. Employing SAT-Modulo Theory leads to more accurate bounds estimation than those provided by other analytical methods, in turn yielding smaller bit-widths.

The paper presents a new methodology for displaying the user's functional demands and evaluating product design for older people. digital design models are integrated with virtual users (digital human models) generated in Jack software and refined from 3D body scanning data. The real interaction between physical design prototypes and potential users are captured by a 3D motion capture system. The captured motion is imposed onto the virtual human in Jack to perform design task analysis graphically.

Materials tectonics is new concept to control energy flows form environmental field to human beings through spatial patterns of ceramics or metals fabricated by using structural joinings. Recently, we have developed two dimensional micro patterns composed of dielectric ceramics in order to control terahertz waves effectively by using stereolithography. In this process, photosensitive resin pastes with titania particles dispersion were spread on a glass substrate with 10 μm in layer thickness by moving a knife edge, and two-dimensional images of ultra violet rays were exposed by using a digital micro-mirror device with 2 μm in part accuracy. Through the layer by layer stacking, periodic structures composed of micro polygon tablets were formed. Dielectric constant of these tablets was measured as 40. Subsequently, the electromagnetic wave properties of these samples were measured by using a terahertz spectroscopic device. In transmission spectra, forbidden bands were observed form 0.33 to 0.57 THz through electromagnetic wave diffractions. Moreover, a localized mode of a transmission peaks was formed in the band gap frequency range. Through transmission line modeling simulations at the peak frequency, electromagnetic energies were concentrated strongly into the thin micro patterns. The terahertz waves are well known to resonate with various types of protein molecules, and expected to control the biological material syntheses through the frequency excitements. Fabricated dielectric ceramic micro patterns are considered to be applied for the new types of reactors to create the useful materials as artificial interfaces between the electromagnetic energy and the biological materials.

In this paper, we introduce an novel emotional agent system in 3D virtual world based on OCC (Ortony, Clore and Collins) theory, FCM (Fuzzy Cognitive Map) and GoalNet. The agent system is designed based on Goal Net model. Emotional modeling and decision making are based on OCC and FCM inference. Emotions modeled by the OCC model are incorporated into FCM inference. It has been shown emotion has a great impact in decision making. The proposed agent system has been applied to design human-like dinosaur agents in the research project "Immersion and Embodied Learning: Traces of Dinosaurs in Earth System Science" supported by National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore. In this project, we have developed an agent mediated immersive Interactive digital Media that appropriately recreates and replays the traces of Earth's history using intelligent agent technology and 3D multi-user environment. The virtual world and emotional dinosaur agents are shown in the demo. The experiments conducted by students in secondary schools in Singapore have shown the emotional agents enable deep learning of earth science. This research aims at improving efficiency and variety of shoe-lasts modeling in the footwear industry. A novel digital method is proposed for customized shoe-last modeling based on the analysis and research of human foot features and the shoe-last design theory. The method uses 3D foot data measured from human feet, combines with shoe-last design specifications and the force analysis of feet-shoe to decide the profile of shoe-lasts. The design of shoe-lasts is based on the action analysis of feet and shoes, foot features, discrete modeling methods and the variable subdivision modeling theory. The proposed method can perform a complete process from design to manufacturing of customized shoe-lasts. The experimental results show its feasibility. It is significant for customized shoe-lasts design and manufacturing.

In recent years, the verification of digital designs has become one of the most challenging, time consuming and critical tasks in the entire hardware development process. Within this area, the vast majority of the verification effort in industry relies on logic simulation tools. However, logic simulators deliver limited performance when faced with vastly complex modern systems, especially synthesized netlists. The consequences are poor design coverage, delayed product releases and bugs that escape into silicon. Thus, we developed a novel GPU-accelerated logic simulator, called GCS, optimized for large structural netlists. By leveraging the vast parallelism offered by GP-GPUs and a novel netlist balancing algorithm tuned for the target architecture, we can attain an order-of-magnitude performance improvement on average over commercial logic simulators, and simulate large industrial-size designs, such as the OpenSPARC processor core design.

As wind turbines continue to grow in size and flexibility and are deployed in more hostile environments, the need to develop advanced control schemes will be elemental to deliver the lowest possible energy costs. This paper explores controller design based on modeling the wind speed as a stochastic process, and the wind generating system (WGS) as a multi-mass system with a soft shaft linking the turbine with the asynchronous generator. The control objectives are to enhance reduction in stresses on the drive-train and to ensure operation geared toward optimal power conversion. A sophisticated control strategy incorporating a multi-objective, full-state feedback with state estimation linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) for generator torque control is proposed. This study focuses on above rated wind speeds, and the LQG's main purpose is to add damping to the drive-train, thereby minimizing cyclic fatigue, while a pitch mechanism prevents rotor overspeed thus ensuring the maximum power constraint is respected. Simulations show the efficacy of the proposed paradigm in meeting the control objectives.
