An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flies without human on board but its mission must be fully controlled by the man operator on-ground below. Thus, this paper showed adaptation in designing a proper work space for UAV operators to ensure the effectiveness of its aerial mission. A Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) is a class of UAV that often characterized to have a long period of operation time. Preliminary assessment on the ground crews of the UAV found that they are exposed to a critical workload (i.e., push and pull of a heavy tool). To further analyze this problem, a prediction was carried out by creating digital human modeling (DHM) of 5, 82, and 95 percentiles of sample population, and these DHM then analyzed using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). Six participants were measured to represent anthropometry data based on Standing and Reaching posture. The analysis is referring to several activities, for instance Task-1: lifting gas cans;Task-2:pouring the gas to the generator;Task-3: swinging the hatch. Total REBA scores for Task-1 at ranging percentiles showed 11 to 12. Task-2 highlights at 5%ile the REBA scored up to 13, and the rest about 11. Task-3 describes the REBA score around 11 at all ranging of percentiles. © 2022 ACM.

The current industrial landscape is characterized by the immense effort towards the digitalization of systems, networks and processes. Under the light of Industry 4.0, digital technologies such as digital Twins (DT), eXtended Reality (XR), and Additive Manufacturing (e.g. Fused Deposition modeling – FDM) are considered among other key pillars for completing the digital transformation of manufacturing and production systems/networks. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance system dependability, ensure precise process monitoring, and predict future system failures. Consequently, in this research work the design, development, and implementation of a digital Twin based framework for monitoring and improving Fused Deposition modeling (FDM). The focal point of the digital Twin is to assess the quality of 3D printed components, calculate the experimental result and accordingly adjust the process parameters, via the seamless connection of the physical printer to its DT. As a result, a fundamental aspect of this study revolves around outlining the information flow among the previously mentioned components to optimize FDM process parameters, thus reducing the time and resources squandered due to human inaccuracies. The execution of the proposed framework hinges on the integration of appropriate communication protocols and channels between the physical and virtual counterparts in order to achieve seamless and continuous communication. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Generative text-to-image platforms have become essential tools across fields such as art, design, and education. While they unlock creative potential by bridging language and vision, there is a lack of sufficient research focusing on user-related challenges with AI text-to-image platforms. This gap underscores the need for a comparative study of AI text-to-image platforms to evaluate their usability and effectiveness from the user’s perspective. This study conducts a comprehensive comparison of three mainstream platforms—DALL-E 3, MidJourney, and Stable Diffusion—through a within-subjects design involving 20 participants from diverse academic backgrounds. Participants completed two tasks per platform: replicating a reference image and creating images based on creative themes. The think-aloud method, image quality ratings (5-point Likert scale), the System Usability Scale (SUS), and semi-structured interviews were used to evaluate usability and user strategies. Results indicate MidJourney excels in image quality and also demonstrates good usability. DALL-E 3 offers slightly higher usability but with moderate image quality. In contrast, Stable Diffusion, while provides advanced customization, is hindered by a steep learning curve and technical complexity, resulting in poorest image quality. Common challenges among three platforms include inconsistent prompt execution, difficulties in describing ideas effectively, and AI artifacts. These findings offer actionable insights for improving platform usability and supporting the broader adoption of text-to-image tools. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Manual material handling (MMH) tasks, involving activities like lifting, carrying, and holding various loads, contribute significantly to lower back fatigue, pain, injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders in occupational settings. This study employs machine learning algorithms to assess ergonomic risks in repetitive lifting tasks, aiming to enhance injury prevention, refine training protocols, and inform workload design for improved worker health. Using data from eight Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors, we developed predictive models to classify lifting tasks based on their biomechanical strain. Ten participants performed repetitive lifts with two box weights, with acceleration and gyroscope data collected. Feature engineering included total acceleration, total angular velocity, and statistical measures computed over a one-second rolling window. Three decision tree-based models achieved classification accuracies of 79.35% (gradient boosting), 91.49% (random forest), and 95.45% (XGBoost). The superior performance of XGBoost highlights the potential of IMU-based machine learning for real-time ergonomic risk assessment. These findings support the development of wearable safety systems for instant feedback, enabling proactive interventions that promote safer work environments and reduce musculoskeletal disorders. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In Virtual Environments (VE), audio technologies play a significant role in immersive and interactive experiences. Virtual Reality (VR) simulations must be ecologically enacted by a participatory exploration of sense-making in a network of human and non-human agents, called actors. The guardian of such locus of agency is the digital twin (DT) that fosters intra-actions between humans and technology, dynamically and fluidly redefining all those configurations that are crucial for meaningful sonic experiences. The idea of human-machine entanglement is here mainly declined in an egocentric-spatial perspective related to emerging knowledge of the listener’s subjectivity. Such a systemic view can be interpreted as a working definition of intelligent reality: a perceptual and cognitive co-constitution of physical and virtual worlds through adaptive and reflective behaviors of VR technologies. The main theoretical results reported in this paper reside in the definition of sonic experiences as a multilayer interconnected network of actors lying in two main layers, i.e., immersion and coherence, which are entangled by a DT able to perform transformative actions for the listener.

In an era of reduced profit margin and high market uncertainty, more than ever it is important to meet operational excellence as a key factor for business sustainability. This is common to most technical applications, but it is particularly true for the drilling operations, where considerable investments and associated risks are involved. During last four years, as part of its digital transformation process, Eni has equipped itself with several digital tools for the diagnosis and the monitoring of drilling and completion operations. Goals and reached benefits can be summarized in risk reduction, operational efficiency and performance optimization. Based on a wide case history started in 2019, a digital Drilling Package was developed for operations support, from the design to the construction phase. Three main tools are now available to be applied to the most complex wells, either stand-alone or in parallel, covering drilling operations non-productive time (NPT) prediction, performance advanced analytics and real time simulations. This last simulation tool was deployed for the first time in late 2020 on some wells and is now being included in the engineering and operation workflows. Attacking operational NPT and invisible lost time with the aim to increase safety and to reach the technical limit is not only a matter of processing tools. It requires a deep integration with headquarter (HQ), geographical units and field locations, with the definition of a strong data management infrastructure. This paper describes Eni's experience both on-site and in office, showing how the portability and integration of big data systems, suitable data lake architectures and human factor synergies can create effectiveness at all levels. An Africa Offshore field case history is reported to show how predictive and data analytics modelling and tools interact. Collaboration skills are important in most professions, but are not straightforward to enhance. In the healthcare sector, collaboration is key to safe patient care, with potentially severe adverse effects when failing. Although these effects are well documented, the healthcare profession is struggling to amend collaboration failures. We designed and developed simulation-based training for a situation well-known for collaboration break-down;namely, the patient transfer between the hospital and the nursing home. We used stakeholder analysis to elicit pain points in the transfer from various stakeholder’s perspectives and elaborated vignettes around the pain points using transition diagrams. We then implemented a selection of the vignettes in a role-playing tool and administered the sequence of vignettes as a simulation scenario to nurses and hospital personnel as a first validation of the vignettes. The purpose of the simulation is two-fold: The simulation can be used to focus on, and discuss, the transfer process itself, and it can be used to train healthcare personnel in the transfer process. Participant feedback relating to the former includes the importance of clear messaging for understanding each other’s needs, the possibility of future organizational learning based on the simulation, and the conditional appropriateness of read-backs in communication. Participant feedback on the latter;i.e., training effects, includes improved inter-organizational understanding, less time on extraneous information requests and responses, and hence more time for patient attendance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The field of neuromorphic computing is approaching an era of rapid adoption driven by the urgent need of a substitute for the von Neumann computing architecture. NEUROTEC I: “Neuro-inspired Artificial Intelligence Technologies for the Elec-tronics of the Future” project is an initiative sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF for its initials in German), that aims to effectively advance the foundations for the utilization and exploitation of neuromorphic computing. NEUROTEC I stands at its successful “final stage” driven by the collaboration from more than 8 institutes from the Jiilich Research Center and the RWTH Aachen University, as well as collaboration from several high-tech industry partners. The NEUROTEC I project considers the field interplay among materials, circuits, design and simulation tools. This paper provides an overview of the project's overall structure and discusses the scientific achievements of its individual activities.

In the realm of the fourth Industrial Revolution, digital technologies are constantly integrated in Manufacturing processes in order to improve system reliability, monitor processes accurately and ultimately optimize processes. In order to tackle these issues, advanced simulation techniques such as digital Twins (DT) have to be developed. Further to that, modern manufacturing systems are based on the integration of non-conventional processes, such as Additive Manufacturing (AM). Therefore, in this research work a Fused Deposition modeling (FDM) DT is designed and developed, integrating quality assessment modules. Furthermore, a database has been modelled in an attempt to monitor all the experiment results. Additional modules have also been created and integrated, such as compensating the effects of printing, as well as immersive interfaces enabling the users to control and monitor the machine state remotely. Consequently, one of the key concepts of this paper is the design of the information flow between the above-mentioned modules for optimizing the FDM process parameters, and thus minimize time and resources caused by human error. The implementation of the proposed framework is based on the integration of suitable communication channels. © 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
