Proactive ergonomics can improve the overall performance and well-being of the user and has the potential to improve the product quality and reduce the cost of resources. Application of digital human modeling (DHM) is a pathway for proactive ergonomics. However, DHM has the issue of fidelity and it is yet not in the level of simulating human perceptions and emotions accurately. In this study, we have proposed an ergonomics approach that is used to infuse human factor engineering (HFE) guidelines during the early design process. The approach utilizes Virtual Reality (VR), Computer Aided design (CAD) objects, and human-subjects to proactively filter design ideas, during the conceptualization phase, before functional prototypes are built. A comparative study between full computational prototyping and mixed prototype using VR is performed by (a) designing cockpit packaging and (b) assessing human performance during a fire in cockpit emergency situation. It is found that the cockpit design based on the two prototyping strategies provide similar outcomes. However, the computational prototyping approach is more suitable in design space exploration and the mixed prototyping is more relevant for communicating design ideas. Further, it is found that the computational prototyping approach cannot simulate the change in human performance due to emergency whereas the mixed prototype is able to simulate the change in human performance due to the emergency situations.

A foot is a part of the human body that is crucial and functions when doing an activity of standing, walking, jumping, or running. When the body is on the move, a good footwear that is required to support weight is shoes. The design and manufacturing of shoes has currently experienced a very rapid development, to meet the needs of users. However, some people have an abnormal foot deformity so it tends to always get pain or uncomfortable while wearing shoes. These people obviously need special shoes with ankle foot orthosis (AFO). Research employing AFO reverse innovative design (RID) of the phase leg scanning, design, and manufacturing of shoes that fit the contour of the patient’s foot is still rare in Indonesia. This process takes approximately 34–45 working days in the making of AFO with the traditional concept by simply following specific instructions from the physician or orthopedic, handmade, not precision, and comfortable use. The application of the Computer-Aided Reverse engineering System (CARE System) is used to assist researchers to design and manufacture AFO which fits with the contour of the patient’s foot. Curve base surface modeling (CBS-modeling) in RID methods was applied to obtain the optimal design of the insole and shoe last. The research output of shoe orthotics (insole, shoe lasts, and shoes) have been used and enjoyed by patients with diabetes very well. This technology is significantly more efficient than the manual process. The manufacturing process was shortened up to 64%. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In order to verify the force, vision and daily energy consumption of the operator in a certain type of command cabin, this paper uses Siemens tecnomatix Jack human-computer simulation software and 3D design software to build a human-computer simulation environment of a certain type of command cabin 2873-1997) standard to establish P5, P50, P95 Chinese adult male digital human models for related simulation analysis; using the visual field of Jack software in the human performance analysis module to analyze the visual field and color recognition angle of a certain type of command cabin operator; using the metabolism module to analyze the daily basic metabolism of the operator; using the force module of the back part to analyze, Through the analysis of human, machine and environment, the simulation experiment provides a theoretical basis for the effectiveness of a certain type of command cabin design, and provides optimization suggestions for the comfort and efficiency of the working seat and display console of the command cabin.

The migration of Manufacturing Execution Systems could eliminate existing paper-based communication media for engineers and operators. This paper presents an approach to solve the resulting information deficit for the R&D process by the integration of a digital operator support system in a human-centered production environment. The design of the solution is based on analyzing the problem statement from two perspectives: (1) Logistics and material flow, (2) applied computer science. For (1) the machine setup is analyzed leveraging the Single Minute Exchange of Dies method. For (2) the design of the user interface for the digital operator support system the standards DIN EN ISO 9241-110 and DIN EN ISO 9241-12 are applied. The solution has been applied and evaluated through a user survey and measuring production performance indicators. Analysis of collected data shows increased user satisfaction and increased worker confidence of over 90% and a reduction of re-work up to 80%. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This poster showcases the progress of students who are receiving scholarships from the National Science Foundation S-STEM project: A Pathway to Completion for Pursuing engineering and engineering Technology Degrees. Thus far, 20 academically high-achieving students who demonstrate financial need have participated in the project. Thirty-six scholarships have been awarded to date, in which a maximum of twelve scholarships are awarded per semester;some students have received scholarships multiple times. Students are from electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, and modeling and simulation majors. As part of this S-STEM project, students also receive academic support, mentorship related to the development of professional workforce skills, career search skills, and opportunities to participate in industry-related field trips. Role models, many of whom are practicing engineers with STEM degrees and are military veterans, serve as presenters and share their personal career pathways and answer students' questions in the required one-hour weekly seminar. Although the students participating in this project meet the strenuous academic criteria set by the project (3.0/4.0), many of the students struggle financially, due to having expended their G.I. benefits, which can impede their academic performance and graduation. While many student success programs focus on freshman and sophomore students, what makes this project unique is its focus on enabling student success at the junior and senior years. This project provides a portfolio of different activities for the more mature student, e.g. financial aid through scholarships, community-based learning opportunities, and academic success strategies that enable stronger retention and student completion rates. Project activities are tailored to veterans and adult learners as this group of students is particularly vulnerable given their need to simultaneously

Recent advances in sensing technologies require the design and development of pattern recognition models capable of processing spatiotemporal data efficiently. In this study, we propose a spatially and temporally aware tensor-based neural network for human pose classification using three-dimensional skeleton data. Our model employs three novel components. First, an input layer capable of constructing highly discriminative spatiotemporal features. Second, a tensor fusion operation that produces compact yet rich representations of the data, and third, a tensor-based neural network that processes data representations in their original tensor form. Our model is end-to-end trainable and characterized by a small number of trainable parameters making it suitable for problems where the annotated data is limited. Experimental evaluation of the proposed model indicates that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Particulate matter in the air ambient as an atmospheric pollutant is widely associated with sundry effects in the human health, mostly related to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases (Fajersztajn, 2013 and Cosselman, 2015). Therefore, in Brazil, particulate matter monitoring is a priority task on Air Quality Management Programs (MMA, 2020). The present study designs an optimal Particulate Matter Monitoring Network (TSP, PM10 and PM2,5) around a future Port to be implemented in Ilheus city, Bahia's state, Brazil. The optimal station locations were determined in order to evaluate the neighboring air quality impacts, mostly provoked by iron ore, clinker, fertilizer, soy and others solid bulks handling and storage activities. It were applied optimal spatial methodology to obtain representative monitoring data and accurate coverage in the area of interest. The Air Quality Monitoring Network design were determinate based on dispersion modeling of pollutants emitted by the Port and also on the application of Figure Of Merit (FOM) and Sphere Of Influence (SOI) concepts, developed LIU et al. (1986). AERMOD model was used for dispersion simulation, in a study area of 2.450 km2, with three years of meteorological data (from 2008 to 2010) collected from Jorge Amado Airport. It were allocated ten thousand receptors on a square grid of 500 meters. Receptors were positioned on the previous air quality monitoring network, in the neighboring location of the enterprise directly affected area and its surroundings. It was also incorporated topography influence by digital Model SRTM3/NASA. Results has shown that the Port's emissions will contribute with hourly average up to 13,4 μg/m3 of PM2,5, 100 μg/m3 of PM10 and 280 μg/m3 of TSP. The achieved levels obtained for TSP and PM10 exceeded the standards established by the CONAMA'S Resolution No. 491/19. The hourly maximum concentrations on the neighborhood of directly affected area has shown three times greater than those found in the
