Although biomechanics models can predict the stress on the musculoskeletal system, they cannot predict how the muscle load associated with exertion is perceived. The short-term goal of the present study was to model t...

This paper introduces a heuristic to solve the combined scheduling, resource building, and wordlength selection problem for multiple wordlength systems. The algorithm involves an iterative refinement of operator wordlength information, leading to a scheduled and bound data-flow graph. Scheduling is performed with incomplete wordlength information during the intermediate stages of this refinement process. Results show significant area savings over known alternative approaches.

The verification of digitaldesigns, i.e., hardware or embedded hardware/software systems, is an important task in the design process. Often more than 70% of the development time is spent for locating and correcting errors in the design. Therefore, many techniques have been proposed to support the debugging process. Recently, simulation and test methods have been accompanied by formal methods such as equivalence checking and property checking. However their industrial applicability is currently restricted to small or medium sized designs or to a specific phase in the design cycle. In this paper, we present a method for verifying temporal properties of systems described in an executable description language. Our method allows the user to specify properties about the system in finite linear time temporal logic. These properties are translated to a special kind of finite state machines which are then efficiently checked on-the-fly during each simulation run. Properties may be placed anywhere in the system description and violations are immediately indicated to the designer.

Three-dimensional anthropometric methods provide much more surface information about the human body than traditional anthropometry. Therefore, making use of this information correctly and fully has become a new research field in applied ergonomics. On the one hand, humandigitalmodeling is a method to represent a target population based on anthropometric data for design processes. On the other hand, current digitalmodeling is not an exact representation of a person because it somewhat overlooks many 3D human body surface characteristics which can be acquired by 3D anthropometric methods. To be able to take 3D characteristics of body form into consideration, we developed a concept of defining human body form in terms of mathematical description. The discovery of the laws of human body form in terms of mathematical description will definitely add more scientific theory to current digitalhumanmodeling. In addition,a semantic concept of body form based on mathematical terms should be developed into a new language that can be understood by designers. As a result,a bridge is built between 3D anthropometric data and industrial design. Finally, this concept will also give a new insight into the conceptualization of product design. This paper discusses the necessity and possibility of mathematical terms to describe human body form for industrial design not only in product design but also for workplace evaluation and design. Furthermore, some new ideas for further study are discussed.

The effect of improved cognition on algorithm performance and evaluation is an exciting area of research. Virtual reality is becoming increasingly popular as a tool for interacting with data and steering the optimization process, rather than simply displaying results. Constantly evolving haptic technology allows people to directly interact with digital objects and data as they do in the real world using their sense of touch., Haptics is revolutionizing the way engineers interact with computers. Hitherto, designers and artists have used haptics to intuitively sculpt models using digital clay and doctors have trained on haptics based virtual surgical simulators Most applications however merely seek to make up for the lack of sense of touch and its effects. The current work investigates the application of the haptics loop for decision support activities in core engineering areas like design optimization and shop floor layout. The simulated annealing algorithm with an adaptive cooling schedule is used to solve the quadratic assignment problem for facility layout The results obtained are interpreted and tested using a combined haptic and graphic environment. The value added due to haptics in virtual reality environments is an open problem. human factor experiments for a decision-making environment were conducted to measure the value added due to inclusion of haptics. After a comprehensive series of tests, a decision is made with regards to use of haptics for engineering and scientific applications.

Solid models are the critical data elements in modern computer-aided design (CAD) environments, describing the shape and form of manufactured artifacts. Their growing ubiquity has created new problems in how to effectively manage the many models that are now stored in the digital libraries of large design and manufacturing enterprises. Existing techniques from the engineering literature and from industrial practice, such as group technology, rely on human-supervised encoding and classification, while techniques from the multimedia database and computer graphics/vision communities often ignore the manufacturing attributes most significant in the classification of models. This paper presents our approach to the manufacturing similarly assessment of solid models of mechanical parts based on machining features. Our technical approach is three-fold: (1) perform machining feature extraction to map the solid model to a set of STEP AP 224 machining features; (2) construct a model dependency graph from the set of machining features; and (3) find the nearest neighbors to the query graph using an iterative improvement search across a database of other models. We also present empirical experiments to validate our approach using our testbed, the National design Repository ( ). The contribution of this research is the first fully automated technique for machining feature-based comparisons of mechanical artifacts. We believe that this work can lead to radical changes in the way in which design data is managed in modern engineering enterprises.
