This paper presents the design of a simple digital servomotor control algorithm used to simulate human motion in the testing of rehabilitation/exercise equipment performance. design performance specifications were determined to simulate typical human motion torque and dynamics. The motor was modelled mathematically, and the parameters of the model were obtained from a step input response. The minimal prototype method was used to obtain a digital control algorithm, which was implemented in the FORTH language on a PDP 11/23 computer.

The authors address the design, tuning and experimental qualitative performance properties of three different digital feedback controllers for (1) discrete lead-lag controllers that modulate pulse width only (with constant amplitude and frequency) for force regulation;(2) controllers which simultaneously modulate pulse width and interpulse interval for force regulation;and (3) controllers which use pulse width modulation to regulate joint stiffness, using feedback of force and position. Experimental results using intramuscular electrodes in different cat muscles and in the human upper extremity are calculated for qualitative performance factors including rise time and setting time, oscillations and steady-state error in response to step and ramp commands as well as robustness of the various controllers (i. e. , insensitivity to disturbances, muscle modeling errors and changes in muscle properties due to fatigue and potentiation).
