An advanced technology has been efficiently applied into the healthcare sector to assess the forces acting on the lumbar spine of nurses during their daily patient transfer activities. The real-time ergonomics outputs from full-body dynamic simulation can be easily evaluated via integrating the Xsens wearable motion tracking system with JACK Siemens PLM software. It greatly reduces the time taken in traditionally dynamic simulation via manually setting the DHM postures. In this study, totally 33 participants were required to complete the pulling effort on a patient manikin at different heights. We successfully revealed that the exposed forces acting on the lumbar spine were directly affected by the postures adopted by participants. This study will provide a new opportunity for ergonomists to assess the injury risk of nurses and provide robust ergonomics analysis for the development of injury prevention program and the better design of assistive devices. © 2022 IISE Annual conference and Expo 2022. To differentiate from competitors, it has become increasingly important to design products based on the 'Kansei value,' which impresses and inspires consumers. However, the perceptual indices of products are generally designed qualitatively, which is not only time-consuming but also costly. Therefore, in recent years, studies have been conducted to discuss the relationship between some perceptions by applying multivariate analysis and machine learning to the adjectives related to perception and affective response. Nonetheless, determining the structure that expresses the relationship of the adjectives is obtained by trial and error, based on the hypothesis of the researchers. Therefore, we aimed to investigate a method for mechanically exploring some semi-optimal structures without a hypothesis of the model structure by applying a genetic algorithm to the construction of adjective relationships using structural equation modeling. In this study, we prepared a four-layered model according to the human perception process for eight categories of material samples and constructed a relationship from a total of 20 words perceived from each sample. Consequently, we could construct a perceptual model that can be interpreted quantitatively and semantically using the proposed method. The advantage of this technique is that it can be used to construct important structures that might be overlooked. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper describes a framework for using 3D simulation as a safety assessment tool based on ISO/TS 15066:2016 guidelines for a cobot work cell. A human-robot collaboration-based work cell has been developed. The digital counterpart of this work cell is developed beforehand to perform several safety assessments based on ISO/TS 15066:2016. It is observed that the 3D simulation model can be used as a safety assessment tool to ensure the safety of a cobot work cell even before its creation. The study also signifies the simulation software for safety and human factors in the design of a cobot cell. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Although there are numerous ergonomics assessment methods available for assessing safety, comfort, and performance of human-product interactions, there is a lack of comprehensive and widely available computational human-centered design framework that brings human factors principles into engineering design. In existing human-centered design approaches, computational assessment of human-product interaction is not explicitly considered as part of the early design phase, but rather it is addressed downstream in the design process through traditional human factors engineering strategies, often, includes physical prototyping and usability studies with extensive human-subject data collection. We hypothesize that digital human modeling can be utilized not only as an ergonomics evaluation tool but also as an engineering design methodology to embrace form and function during the early phases of the development. The digital human modeling approach has the potential to be a merger between the form and functionality aspects of product design by focusing on human needs, abilities, and limitations. This paper introduces a novel human-in-the-loop methodology which injects human factors engineering principles via digital human modeling into a computational design environment to assess the safety and performance of human-product interactions early in design.

As intelligent vehicle technologies advance, autonomous service applications like retail vehicles are disrupting traditional service modes. However, effectively coordinating these emerging technologies in service systems design and optimization faces challenges due to unpredictable customer behaviors and demands. This paper explores the potential of parallel service theories to address the complexity of blending automation and human factors. We present a case study applying a parallel service approach to optimize an autonomous retail vehicle service system. By implementing a human-in-the-loop strategy, we focus on modeling customer preference to guide vehicle routing. Simulation experiments demonstrate improved delivery times compared to a basic nearest-neighbor policy. Despite limitations like simplified customer models, our preliminary results suggest parallel services hold promise for managing future hybrid human-machine service systems.

Prototyping is a crucial aspect of the product design and development process. Successful development and deployment of products hinge on building correct prototypes. However, current prototyping frameworks often do not provide specific prototyping guidelines that are practical and readily applicable and do not consider human Factors engineering (HFE) design guidelines thoroughly. This paper presents a novel prototyping framework that integrates prototyping and HFE guidelines to address the research gap in the prototyping literature. The prototyping framework presents a database in the form of a graphical user interface (GUI), which contains userform data entry. The GUI userform helps the designer to develop prototyping strategies based on the prototyping best practices and HFE principles. Further, the GUI userform suggests tools and technologies that can be used to fabricate the prototype. Thus, the framework helps designers plan prototyping activities and reduces the reliance on intuition when fabricating prototypes. This paper also presents a preliminary validation study that focuses on exploring whether there is a statistical difference between the intervention and control group in developing prototyping strategies for various prototyping problems. The intervention and control group are tested using twelve prototyping problems, and the Prototyping Success score is measured for each group. An independent sample t-test is performed. From the statistical analysis, it can be inferred that the participants who use the prototyping framework produce mean Prototyping Success scores that are higher than that of the control group.

In the past few years, we have witnessed a rapid surge in technological advancements, which has significantly accelerated the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems [1], [2]. This has fundamentally transformed the manner in which humans and machines communicate and interact with each other [3], [4]. The advent of advanced AI technologies has paved the way for the development of personal AI assistants that can emulate human intelligence and behavior [5], [6]. Our paper provides an in-depth exploration into the design and execution of ‘AIDEN: Artificial Intelligence and digital Entity Network’. AIDEN is an innovative project that aims to create a personal AI assistant. The primary objective of AIDEN is to enhance user experiences by facilitating interactions that are as natural and human-like as possible [7], [8]. This groundbreaking project represents a significant stride in the field of AI, pushing the boundaries of what machines can achieve in terms of mimicking human intelligence and interaction [9], [10].

VR system generally includes three aspects: one is the intervener, that is, people. VR development must be based on human data and perception psychology. The second is virtual environment, which involves hardware equipment, software system, and content production. The third is the human-computer interface, which is the data way to connect people and virtual environment. This paper takes the 30th anniversary virtual exhibition hall of Yunmen College of Guangdong Buddhist Academy as a case, and uses 3D modeling technology and 360 panoramic virtual reality technology to build a synthetic digital exhibition hall. Virtual exhibition halls break the limitations of physical exhibition halls in terms of time and space, greatly expand the extension space and communication efficiency of exhibition information, and meet the functional expectations of the public for activity communication.

The need for point-of-care health solutions and digital health interventions continues to increase, driven by an aging population and those displaced from the systemic impacts of environmental, infrastructural, and economic factors. These demographic and social shifts are placing unprecedented strain on the healthcare system. In response to these challenges, digital health solutions are emerging, although data indicates low confidence among both consumers and healthcare professionals due to a lack of regulatory oversight compared to traditional medical systems. This research explores the use of augmented reality (AR) technology in physical therapy and rehabilitation as a potential digital health intervention. The focus is on improving upper limb and hand mobility. This study employs a digital engineering design process in collaboration with physical therapists and clinical researchers. The goal is to utilize data from the AR sensors to capture quantitative information about a patient's therapeutic progress. The digital engineering framework presented can be applied for improving the validation and verification of technology-based digital health interventions, with the potential to enhance access to rehabilitation resources. Use-case and requirement diagrams are developed through close collaboration with physical therapy clinicians, to assess user engagement and therapeutic outcomes. Activity diagrams capture successive stages of improvement in the proposed system. The performance of the AR application in tracking joint angles and measuring mobility during prescribed gestures is evaluated against published normative values, highlighting the potential of this technology to improve upon manual measurement methods.

A federated instrument-to-edge-to-center architecture is needed to autonomously collect, transfer, store, process, curate, and archive scientific data and reduce human-in-the-loop needs with (a) common interfaces to leverage community and custom software, (b) pluggability to permit adaptable solutions, reuse, and digital twins, and (c) an open standard to enable adoption by science facilities world-wide. The Selfdriven Experiments for Science/Interconnected Science Ecosystem (INTERSECT) Open Architecture enables science breakthroughs using intelligent networked systems, instruments and facilities with autonomous experiments, "self-driving" laboratories, smart manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI) driven design, discovery and evaluation. It creates an open federated architecture for the laboratory of the future using a novel approach, consisting of (1) science use case design patterns, (2) a system of systems architecture, and (3) a microservice architecture.
