This paper presents the Ontology Language for the Dependability of Automated Systems (OLDAS), a modeling language based on Unified modeling Language (UML) that aims to support dependability assessment for Automated Systems (ASs), i.e., systems intended to perform a function with minimal or no human intervention. OLDAS extends the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO) and embeds validation rules to prevent constraint violations in ASs analysis. Specifically, the paper presents how OLDAS can support different activities during the design of ASs, from the definition of the Operational design Domain to scenario-based analysis. OLDAS is available as a plugin of the open-source Papyrus for Robotics framework.

digital voltage mode control (DVMC) and current mode control (DCMC) techniques find increasing adoption in mainstream power electronics products;however, it still remains a challenge in identifying suitable small-signal based design methods in shaping load and reference transient performance. This paper considers both continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) small-signal models (SSMs) in a synchronous buck converter. Using both the modeling approaches, (i) stability analysis and controller design are carried out;their (ii) advantages and shortcomings are highlighted using design case studies;(iii) a combined CT and DT design approach is identified to retain design simplicity and closed-loop stability in achieving fast transient performance. Taking the benefits of both the CT and DT SSMs models, controller design algorithms are developed for both DVMC and DCMC. Further, a new digital PID controller design method is developed to achieve load-insensitive closed-loop output impedance, which results in superior load transient performance compared to a traditional loop-shaping approach. Both DVMC and DCMC case studies are considered, and analytical predictions are verified using simulation results. Finally, a buck converter prototype is made, and experimental results are presented to demonstrate a stable design with fast load transient and reference transient performance.

Several publications claim positive effects of learning videos - in addition to indications of increased motivation among learners, studies suggest that learning performance can be increased [1-3]. With a focus on digital transformation, this paper will consider a self-study-video in the field of university education. The content of the investigated self-study-video is a central model of occupational safety: the design model of protective measures. The presented short intervention was designed as self-study-video based on an existing textbook chapter. Besides the evaluation of design elements, it was investigated which effects learning videos may have on the motivation and learning performance of students learning the design model. Students of the University of Wuppertal were the sample for the intervention. The study population were Safety engineering students, who visit the lecture "basics of occupational safety". Ninety students attended all steps of the experiment (treatment group n = 44;textbook-group n = 46). The self-study-video has a significant effect on the increase of knowledge and the video-group seems to be more successful than the textbook-group in the post-test. However, the self-study-video is not as motivating as expected, caused by the design of the self-study-video with a computer-generated voice.

The field of landscape architecture and planning urgently requires the use of visualization and intelligent technologies to optimize traditional design processes. In response to the digital landscape planning needs, this research has designed and implemented a digital landscape planning system based on visualization technology. Through the development of visualization techniques, system framework design, and the implementation of key technologies, we have developed an integrated landscape planning system that combines digital scene modeling, interactive design, and intelligent planning optimization. The research has verified that the system achieves a high level of fidelity in digital scene representation and demonstrates effective human-computer interaction. The system enables the rapid construction of highly faithful digital landscape scenes, assisting designers in creative design and proposal assessment. Additionally, it leverages knowledge rules and successful cases to facilitate interactive intelligent optimization of landscape design proposals. The goal of this research is to develop a digital landscape planning system that integrates digital scene construction and intelligent design optimization. This research provides valuable technological support and practical implementation for the intelligent and digital transformation of landscape planning, contributing to innovation in the field. © 2024 SPIE.

This paper reports on a novel experiential course, Service Learning in STEM, which aimed to create opportunities for students to apply their technical skills to community-based problems. The course has been piloted as part of the Women In Science and engineering (WISE) Honors program. Incorporating service projects as part of required curriculum ensures that all students have access without the burden of additional credit hours. Moreover, the innovative partnership with career services has brought a diverse group of non-profit agencies from the local area to the program through its existing relationships. Agencies present their projects and students choose;5-6 teams are assigned to each project. Projects vary from term to term. Examples include: coordinating Hack-a-thon on 3D modeling, creating digital tools to spread awareness on human trafficking, building a trebuchet by using mechanics and physics behind it, building a balloon powered cardboard car or constructing a digital map for circular economy programs to divert waste from landfills. Weekly meetings between agency and team are coordinated by a student team leader and held to co-develop the process, deliverables, timeline and implementation plans. Students complete bi-weekly personal journal reflections to unpack their experience throughout the term. Projects are presented at the end of the term with agency representatives attending. Peer evaluations are conducted, as well as periodic surveys and focus groups to understand the efficacy of the experiences for both students and community partners. Students report high satisfaction with the experience, pointing to several gains: deeper understanding of the plight of communities in need (e.g., homeless, seniors, underprivileged kids), skills they honed during the project (e.g., essential skills such as organizational, communication, presentation, teamwork, creative problem solving, perseverance, leadership), and technical skills (e.g., project design, data collec

Due to the ever-increasing use of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for assessing gas turbine combustor flow and mixing fields, flame position and flame dynamics, methods to reduce the computational costs of such simulations are desirable. One such method to achieve this is to utilize advanced High Performance Computing (HPC) architectures such as General Purpose Graphical Processing Units (GPGPUs). In this paper, the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ (R) solver, with the ability to run LES and flamelet based combustion models using GPUs, is used to assess the benefits of using GPU architecture compared to traditional Central Processing Units (CPUs). LES simulations using the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) combustion model are assessed across a series of test cases: A diffusion jet flame, a pressurized annular combustor and a swirl stabilized industrial gas turbine Dry Low Emission (DLE) combustor provided by Siemens Energy Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd, Lincoln, UK. Numerical simulations using GPUs and CPUs are compared in terms of solution similarity, accuracy in relation to experimental data, computational cost and power consumption. The computational performance of the FGM model with GPU is quantified through comparison to a non-reacting simulation on the same computational grid. It is demonstrated that the use of GPU architectures can result in high-fidelity combustion modelling within the required turn-around times of engineering design cycles whilst maintaining a similar solution and level of accuracy as a traditional CPU based simulation.

The continuous popularization and application of computer 3D modeling and 3D printing technology in the field of art design has improved and changed the traditional design and production mode to a certain extent. In order to solve the shortcomings of the existing research on human-machine dynamic interaction of 3D printing and digital sculpture, this paper discusses A3D digitalization, the mainstream technology of 3D printing, human-machine dynamic interaction and traditional sculpture making, and briefly discusses the image preprocessing and human-machine interaction and digital design software of 3D printing based on human-machine interaction. In addition, it designs the technology of human-computer interaction information extraction, visual interaction key frame selection, equipment operation and 3D printing body structure digital molding technology. Finally through the concrete experiment analysis. The results show that the average inter-frame distance error of the key frame sequence extracted based on the visual interaction method is the smallest. The calculated frame spacing error is as low as 0.029. The minimum error of manual extraction was 0.557. The minimum X-means clustering error is 0.047. Therefore, it is verified that the integration method of human-machine dynamic interaction and digital sculpture based on 3D printing designed in this paper has high practical value. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

The purpose of this methods paper is to identify the opportunities and applications of agent-based modeling (ABM) methods to interpretative qualitative and educational research domains. The context we explore in this paper considers graduate engineering attrition, which has been a funded research focus of our group for ten years. In attrition research, as with all human research, it is impossible and unethical to imperil real graduate students by subjecting them to acute stressors that are known to contribute to attrition in order to "test" different combinations of factors on persistence and attrition. However, agent-based modeling (ABM) methods have been applied in other human decision-making contexts in which a computer applies researcher-programmed logic to digital actors, invoking them to make digital decisions that mimic human decision-making. From our research team's ten years of research studying graduate socialization and attrition and informed from a host of theories that have been used in literature to investigate doctoral attrition, this paper compares the utility of two programming languages, Python and NetLogo, in conducting agent-based modeling to model graduate attrition as a platform. In this work we show that both platforms can be used to simulate attrition and persistence scenarios for thousands of digital agent-students simultaneously to produce results that agree with both with previous qualitative data and that agree with aggregate attrition and persistence statistics from literature. The two languages differ in their integrated development environments (IDE) with the methods of producing the models customizable to fit the needs of the study. Additionally, the size of the intended agent pool impacted the efficiency of the data collection. This paper outlines a methodology for computing the aerodynamics of an arbitrarily shaped body in real-time. The research aims to effectively enable flight vehicle design, testing, and evaluation within a simulated digital twin model of a planetary atmosphere. It encompasses the modeling and simulation of all systems, such as guidance and control, thermal management, propulsion, aerodynamics, and human-in-the-loop piloting. Applications range from launchto- orbit vehicle design to entry, descent, and landing. This paper addresses the aerodynamic portion of such a simulation, including the incompressible subsonic, compressible subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flows around an arbitrary unstructured mesh. The subsonic model utilizes MachLine, an incompressible inviscid Panel Method. The paper also outlines a novel supersonic and hypersonic model that applies two-dimensional shock theory and expansion fans with graph theory to an arbitrary three-dimensional geometry. A real-time aerodynamics model allows designers to solve the aerodynamics of a vehicle quicker than traditional computational fluid dynamics, enabling its use in holistic mission and vehicle simulations with human-in-theloop capabilities without a significant loss of accuracy. The models presented have been verified with experimental results of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle Crew Capsule at different angles of attack and Mach numbers. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. In contemporary digital landscape, the demand for personalized design is significantly influenced by rising consumer expectations. Enabling active user engagement and catering to individual preferences has become essential for creating personalized experiences, improve customer satisfaction and foster brand loyalty. These factors are fundamental to the success of products and services. However, traditional personalized design methodologies often lack active user active participation and are typically implemented through configurations predefined by experts. In this study, we introduce designGemini, a highly personalized design approach that integrates generative models with human digital twin. This methodology facilitates the generation of personalized designs through natural language interactions with generative models, while simultaneously enabling online preference recognition and ergonomic analysis via the establishment of human digital twins. Additionally, we present a case study on the personalized design of vehicle seats to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. This case study effectively showcases product generation utilizing TAPS3D, a text-to-3D generative model, along with rapid ergonomic analysis employing a vision-based human digital twin modeling technique. © 2024 IEEE.
