An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flies without human on board but its mission must be fully controlled by the man operator on-ground below. Thus, this paper showed adaptation in designing a proper work space for UAV operators to ensure the effectiveness of its aerial mission. A Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) is a class of UAV that often characterized to have a long period of operation time. Preliminary assessment on the ground crews of the UAV found that they are exposed to a critical workload (i.e., push and pull of a heavy tool). To further analyze this problem, a prediction was carried out by creating digital human modeling (DHM) of 5, 82, and 95 percentiles of sample population, and these DHM then analyzed using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). Six participants were measured to represent anthropometry data based on Standing and Reaching posture. The analysis is referring to several activities, for instance Task-1: lifting gas cans;Task-2:pouring the gas to the generator;Task-3: swinging the hatch. Total REBA scores for Task-1 at ranging percentiles showed 11 to 12. Task-2 highlights at 5%ile the REBA scored up to 13, and the rest about 11. Task-3 describes the REBA score around 11 at all ranging of percentiles. © 2022 ACM.

In Virtual Environments (VE), audio technologies play a significant role in immersive and interactive experiences. Virtual Reality (VR) simulations must be ecologically enacted by a participatory exploration of sense-making in a network of human and non-human agents, called actors. The guardian of such locus of agency is the digital twin (DT) that fosters intra-actions between humans and technology, dynamically and fluidly redefining all those configurations that are crucial for meaningful sonic experiences. The idea of human-machine entanglement is here mainly declined in an egocentric-spatial perspective related to emerging knowledge of the listener’s subjectivity. Such a systemic view can be interpreted as a working definition of intelligent reality: a perceptual and cognitive co-constitution of physical and virtual worlds through adaptive and reflective behaviors of VR technologies. The main theoretical results reported in this paper reside in the definition of sonic experiences as a multilayer interconnected network of actors lying in two main layers, i.e., immersion and coherence, which are entangled by a DT able to perform transformative actions for the listener.

digital human modeling (DHM) brings in the advantages of reducing the time and cost spent on building physical prototypes and minimizing the risk of conducting human-subject data collection in hazardous settings. However, most of the DHM studies focus on evaluating standardized tasks executed in normal or nominal work conditions. There is a limited existing DHM research that focuses on the analysis of high-risk tasks performed during emergencies. This paper introduces a DHM based design framework that focuses on the ergonomics evaluation of high-risk tasks that are required to be performed during an emergency. The research aims to provide a methodology that can be used to measure the effect on the visibility of the controls due to a fire or smoke emergency in a civilian aircraft cockpit. The design framework described in this paper also automates the repetitive task simulations and ergonomic evaluations, which are typically performed manually by the designer. Thus, the automation module saves time and allows the consideration of a large sample set of anthropometries for assessing ergonomic adequacies. The automation framework also brings in the advantage of making the emergency assessments part of the early design ergonomics analysis digitally, which has not been the focus of traditional ergonomics studies.. In contemporary design-for-manufacturability education, the use of design-thinking (or human-centered design) and team-based design projects are ubiquitous. Students are typically taken on a journey to better appreciate synthesis of the "big picture" while learning to consider an open-ended manufacturability problem from various perspectives and discovering the value in empathy and co-creation. However, with the onset of online-only modes of instruction to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, meaningful collaborative learning has become challenging. Students regularly cite the lack of social interaction as a main reason for poor virtual teamwork and tend to display entrenched preference for face-to-face interactions to perform ideation and to understand or resolve issues, which hampers the use of online counterparts. However, online learning has brought to light several digital platforms that are easily customizable for online collaboration among students. When it comes to virtual ideation (or virtual "brainstorming"), effective generation of new ideas or concepts is difficult. Social media platforms like WeChat, GroupMe, and Discord are beneficial for high-level idea sharing;Zoom and other videoconferencing platforms might be similarly helpful. Still, engineering students tend to have trouble when using computer-aided drawing platforms that do not allow interactive collaboration in real-time (e.g. Fusion 360). Instructors also must contend with student apprehension to use unfamiliar digital tools. Among online collaborative platforms, Miro may pose a solution to these challenges, as it allows for synchronous interaction and captures essential elements of a face-to-face ideation environment. This platform could also facilitate empathy-mapping and journey-mapping labs, where team members would capture the team's combined user knowledge and map-out user attitudes, behaviors, needs, and pain points. In the realm of the fourth Industrial Revolution, digital technologies are constantly integrated in Manufacturing processes in order to improve system reliability, monitor processes accurately and ultimately optimize processes. In order to tackle these issues, advanced simulation techniques such as digital Twins (DT) have to be developed. Further to that, modern manufacturing systems are based on the integration of non-conventional processes, such as Additive Manufacturing (AM). Therefore, in this research work a Fused Deposition modeling (FDM) DT is designed and developed, integrating quality assessment modules. Furthermore, a database has been modelled in an attempt to monitor all the experiment results. Additional modules have also been created and integrated, such as compensating the effects of printing, as well as immersive interfaces enabling the users to control and monitor the machine state remotely. Consequently, one of the key concepts of this paper is the design of the information flow between the above-mentioned modules for optimizing the FDM process parameters, and thus minimize time and resources caused by human error. The implementation of the proposed framework is based on the integration of suitable communication channels. © 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

As capability of digitizing information is advanced, application of virtual and augmented reality has been popular in various areas such as education, entertainment, training, communication, design, therapy, and more. In the literature, a considerable number of studies have used digitalization technologies for ergonomics, named virtual ergonomics in modern technologies of Industry 4.0, in design of process of workstations, manufacturing workplaces, and maintenance activities. In general, most of studies reported potentials of virtual ergonomics in terms of fidelity, usability, and cost. The objective of this study was to review empirical studies from different industry types in the literature to investigate potentials and limitations on the assessment of task performance in the application of virtual ergonomics. In this review, the difference from traditional ergonomics was compared from the perspective of user’s ergonomic factors rather than physical ergonomic issues with the design of virtual reality peripherals. Potentials of virtual ergonomics were identified from the perspectives of efficiency on communicating ergonomic factors, assessing musculoskeletal impacts, and measuring range of movements of the body while limitations were also recognized by the lack of validation in virtual design, longer task execution time from higher mental workload, and the fidelity of model for finding the velocities or accelerations of movement of the body in a virtual environment. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A standard finite element analysis of individual components in aero engine and other systems shows a high accuracy compared to experimental measurements of the system response. However when it comes to assemblies, the conventional linear approaches fail to deliver good accuracy. This is due to the uncertain physical phenomena in the contact interface of the joints. A nonlinear contact problem is introduced by the joint and influences the overall dynamic behavior of the engine assembly. Therefore, the linear dynamic models must be coupled with nonlinear analysis of the assembly to investigate the accurate dynamics of the nonlinear system. Flanges are widely used joints that represent the main source of nonlinearities in assemblies. In this study, a finite element simulation of two bolted flanges is considered to identify the nonlinear behavior of the bolted flange joint caused by the presence of friction in contact interfaces. A detailed model of a bolted joint was built in ANSYS in order to evaluate the energy dissipated in a bolted joint and therefore provide accurate modeling of joint interfaces. Due to the high cost of the detailed model, an equivalent model was derived and predictions from this model are compared to the detailed model results in order to provide a robust model for designing bolted joints. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc 2021.

With the continuous development of today's society, the ability to respond to unexpected events and emergencies is crucial for ensuring public safety and protecting property. However, traditional emergency response methods have some limitations and challenges, such as on-site operational risks, insufficient human resources, and difficulties in real-time decision-making. The use of mechanical equipment to perform specific tasks in unknown environments and scenarios or to analyze and make decisions based on the on-site conditions has become a trend. On this premise, this paper proposes a digital twin platform based on Unity3D software. The system collects real-time information in the real environment and feeds it back to the virtual platform. It uses a four-wheel, dual-drive intelligent car as the motion carrier, which carries a Six-degree of freedom industrial robotic arm to work synchronously, and uses an intelligent camera to detect environmental information, to realize the three-dimensional perception interaction between virtual and reality, and it can achieve remote control of real rescue robots by manipulating the robotic arm and its carrier in twin scenarios to replicate the actions of industrial equipment in real scenarios. The experimental results indicate that the system exhibits good performance and flexibility in emergency response. Through remote control of industrial robotic arms and smart cars, as well as the use of digital twin models, the operators can respond to emergencies in a better way and make timely and accurate decisions, providing early warning as well as making search and rescue plans for emergency rescue to work.

With the advent of four-dimensional (4D) printing technology, manufactured components may adapt their form, size, or properties in response to external stimuli. This new 4D printing technology has opened several doors in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most common and cost-effective 3D printing procedures for making components out of shape-memory polymers. It is well known that programming and training are required for the 4D printing process. This work reports crucial programming methodologies that can be applied to FDM 4D printing. A detailed angle measurement scheme and the hot water actuation apparatus have been reported and discussed. This can be used to measure shape morphing in a folding or bending actuator for a variety of multifaceted applications. The angle measurement scheme presented allows for the accurate measurement of the degree of bending without causing any damage to the actuator and for real-time feedback regarding how much shape-morphing has taken place. In addition, the hot water actuation apparatus can provide high accuracy in controlling the bending angle with a simple setup. This apparatus provides a reliable and cost-effective solution to obtaining accurate bending angle measurements. Finally, when it comes to accurately measuring the shape morphing in a bending actuator, the combination of the various programming methodologies, angle measurement scheme, and hot water actuation apparatus offers a number of advantages. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
