The migration of Manufacturing Execution Systems could eliminate existing paper-based communication media for engineers and operators. This paper presents an approach to solve the resulting information deficit for the R&D process by the integration of a digital operator support system in a human-centered production environment. The design of the solution is based on analyzing the problem statement from two perspectives: (1) Logistics and material flow, (2) applied computer science. For (1) the machine setup is analyzed leveraging the Single Minute Exchange of Dies method. For (2) the design of the user interface for the digital operator support system the standards DIN EN ISO 9241-110 and DIN EN ISO 9241-12 are applied. The solution has been applied and evaluated through a user survey and measuring production performance indicators. Analysis of collected data shows increased user satisfaction and increased worker confidence of over 90% and a reduction of re-work up to 80%. © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Today, in aerospace and automotive industries, structural components are more and more designed up to their functional limits, pursuing weight minimization without compromising the mechanical integrity. Especially in the aforementioned domains, the fracture behavior is of utmost importance in this respect. Yet, due to the complexity of the underlying physical phenomena and corresponding models, taking fracture into account in a virtual design process still proves to be highly challenging. Nevertheless, in recent years, there has been a strong development in various numerical simulation techniques that can simulate crack initiation and growth, i.e., techniques such as the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM), meshless methods as the Element Free Galerkin Method (EFG) or the Phase Field Fracture (PFF) modeling approach. In this paper, the objective is to examine to what extend these approaches are applicable in a design context by assessing their relative value regarding validity and uncertainty. Also, some numerical aspects regarding efficiency and stability are discussed. The work is based on the study of a specific case. First, standard compact tension experiments are performed. These results are used to identify the necessary material properties and associated parametric uncertainty levels for each of the considered fracture modelling approaches. Next, a validation study is performed in which stereo digital Image Correlation (DIC) is applied during the actual crack propagation phase in the same compact tension test. The model form uncertainty is assessed by comparing the set of DIC full field displacement and strain measurements with the range of the numerical predictions including uncertainty of the different modelling strategies. © 2020, The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.

High-intensity impulsive sounds (e.g., explosions, firearms, etc.) are known to damage the human eardrum (Tympanic Membrane, TM), and produce conductive hearing loss. However, the eardrum failure mechanism under high-pressure loading has not been well studied. Our previous investigations have shown the feasibility of using full-field-of-view 3D High-Speed digital Image Correlation (3D-HSDIC) with a custom-made loading apparatus to study acoustically induced damage on artificial membranes. In this paper, we present new measurements on multiple human post-mortem eardrums. The dynamic 3D displacements and transient shape changes of the entire eardrum surface during the rupture are simultaneously quantified at high frame rates (i.e., >100,000 Hz) using the 3D-HSDIC method over the rapid time-course of the TM response. The results describe the high strain-rate and large displacements of the eardrum from the initial stages of rapid pressurization up to complete eardrum failure. The high spatio-temporal resolution measurements allow the determination of eardrum mechanical properties under high-pressure loading. This study indicates the potential utility of high-speed DIC to study high pressure induced TM failure mechanisms, which has impact on developing new hearing protection devices. Future measurements will be performed with a miniaturized optical system and an updated high-pressure loading apparatus designed using advanced thermo-acousto-fluidic numerical modeling and high-speed Schlieren imaging techniques. © 2020, Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.

College of engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) at the Oklahoma State University (OSU) annually offers a 3-week high school-to-college transitional program called Summer Bridge for incoming engineering freshmen. The summer bridge program is a hands-on, experience-based learning program that gives engineering freshmen a good head-start to their college careers and greatly increases their likelihood of success. Various engineering departments actively participate in this program by offering a discipline-specific hands-on experimental or simulation-based design modules to provide exposure to engineering disciplines through active experiences. In this summer bridge program, the Mechanical engineering Technology (MET) department of the Division of engineering Technology (DET) offers a design module: Roll-The-Roller 3D Printing design Contest. The is a six-hour-long event that is spread over three days with two-hour sessions each day. The objective of this design module is to provide an opportunity to study and expand the abilities of 3D design and manufacturing with experimental hand-on learning. The main goal is to design, print, and test a 3D-printed roller that rolls faster than the designs by the other competitors. Here, a 3D structure (roller) will be first conceptualized and designed with strict design constraints and tested on a ramp for maximum acceleration. To achieve this goal, the team will first start making the 3D roller physically by using modeling clay and/or 3D pens, then the finalized design translates into 3D CAD model for 3D printing. The team will learn the concept of physics, lightweight structures, and 3D printing through this exercise. This 3D printed roller will be later tested on a ramp for speed. The roller that completes the race first wins. In summary, this article shows a step-by-step procedure for creating an experience-based summer bridge program to improve the success of incoming engineering freshmen students. © American Societ

Radiation caused by radiation sources due to ionization in the form of alpha, beta, gamma, X-ray and neutron radiations is harmful to human health. Multi-Channel Analyzers (MCAs) are incorporated in nuclear instruments for various applications like Isotope identifiers, Alpha/Gamma spectroscopy and liquid scintillators etc., that demand wide resolutions. Analog signal which is detected by the detector from radiation source is converted into digital using Analog-to-digital Converter (ADC). Trapezoidal shaping is done by the digital Signal Processor (DSP) using the proposed algorithms. This work targets the design and implementation of digital Multi Channel Analyzer implemented on FPGA that can be used in nuclear spectroscopy instruments. The MCA system is designed by using trapezoidal recursive algorithm with the help of Lower Level Discriminator (LLD) and Upper Level Discriminator (ULD) detection using peak detection. The height of the pulse is the proportional to the energy of the particle which is used for peak detection. The peak detection data is counted, and histograms are generated for data analysis. This system is designed and realized by using Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) with low power and high profile SmartFusion2 FPGA SoC that can be used in nuclear spectroscopy instruments. The peak detection and counting are done by the modules developed using Hardware Description language (HDL) aiming the target device to be the Smart Fusion 2 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which has in-built digital Signal Processor (DSP). © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. This paper is based on, and in continuation of the work previously published in other conferences [1, 2]. This applied research is concerned with a study of an example automotive seating rail structure. Seat structures, one of the key components, as they withstand the weight of passenger, holds the seating foams and other assembled important components such as side airbag and seatbelt systems. The entire seating assembly is supported firmly and attached to the bottom bodywork of the vehicle through the linkage assembly called the seat rails. These seat rails are adjustable in their longitudinal motion (front and back) which plays an important role in giving the passengers enough leg room to make them feel comfortable. Therefore, seat rails under the various operating conditions, should be able to withstand the complete weight of the human with the seating structures, other assembled parts into the seating, and satisfy functional requirements such as crash safety to avoid or to minimize injuries to the occupants. Keeping the above requirements in view, the goal of this work is to perform studies on the seat rails under different operating conditions through a detailed investigation using SolidWorks CAE simulation tool for structural and vibration (dynamic) analyses with durability using different grades of steel, aluminum, and multi-materials. Based on these studies a slightly modified design of the seat rail structure is proposed. The modified design is anticipated to increase the fatigue life, decrease the damage percentage, increase the resonant frequencies, factor of safety, and increase the amount of absorbed crush energy. Preliminary buckling studies are also performed. Real life experimentation is not carried out in this work. Recent advances in sensing technologies require the design and development of pattern recognition models capable of processing spatiotemporal data efficiently. In this study, we propose a spatially and temporally aware tensor-based neural network for human pose classification using three-dimensional skeleton data. Our model employs three novel components. First, an input layer capable of constructing highly discriminative spatiotemporal features. Second, a tensor fusion operation that produces compact yet rich representations of the data, and third, a tensor-based neural network that processes data representations in their original tensor form. Our model is end-to-end trainable and characterized by a small number of trainable parameters making it suitable for problems where the annotated data is limited. Experimental evaluation of the proposed model indicates that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Particulate matter in the air ambient as an atmospheric pollutant is widely associated with sundry effects in the human health, mostly related to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases (Fajersztajn, 2013 and Cosselman, 2015). Therefore, in Brazil, particulate matter monitoring is a priority task on Air Quality Management Programs (MMA, 2020). The present study designs an optimal Particulate Matter Monitoring Network (TSP, PM10 and PM2,5) around a future Port to be implemented in Ilheus city, Bahia's state, Brazil. The optimal station locations were determined in order to evaluate the neighboring air quality impacts, mostly provoked by iron ore, clinker, fertilizer, soy and others solid bulks handling and storage activities. It were applied optimal spatial methodology to obtain representative monitoring data and accurate coverage in the area of interest. The Air Quality Monitoring Network design were determinate based on dispersion modeling of pollutants emitted by the Port and also on the application of Figure Of Merit (FOM) and Sphere Of Influence (SOI) concepts, developed LIU et al. (1986). AERMOD model was used for dispersion simulation, in a study area of 2.450 km2, with three years of meteorological data (from 2008 to 2010) collected from Jorge Amado Airport. It were allocated ten thousand receptors on a square grid of 500 meters. Receptors were positioned on the previous air quality monitoring network, in the neighboring location of the enterprise directly affected area and its surroundings. It was also incorporated topography influence by digital Model SRTM3/NASA. Results has shown that the Port's emissions will contribute with hourly average up to 13,4 μg/m3 of PM2,5, 100 μg/m3 of PM10 and 280 μg/m3 of TSP. The achieved levels obtained for TSP and PM10 exceeded the standards established by the CONAMA'S Resolution No. 491/19. The hourly maximum concentrations on the neighborhood of directly affected area has shown three times greater than those found in the

Outdoor safety way guidance sign's guidance function benefits from its reasonable layout information design. In order to get an effective design method, a series of analyses were done as follows. Based on the theory of human factors engineering, an interactive mode between individual and sign was proposed, dividing the interaction process into four stages: Capturing Sign, Reading Information, Making Decision, and Taking Action. Based on Shannon information theory, a method on how to measure a sign's information and its loss caused by obstacles was put forward, and 305.2 bit was pointed out to be the allowed information maximum value when designing a sign under the consideration of human's ability to deal with information. Signs were classified to be 11 kinds according to corresponding evacuation environment and psychological needs, and what information should each kind show on layout was analyzed with several typical design examples following. A simulation model was created by 3dsmax to verify obstacle's influence on information transferring from signs to individuals, and to analyze improved design methods. The research results were expected to be useful to instruct designers in designing outdoor safety way guidance signs and to improve evacuation efficiency.
