This paper is an attempt to report the modeling, design and build analysis of thermoelectric module (TEM) with realistic conditions for electrical power generation. It gives an insight to static and dynamic modeling with temperature dependent parametric variations and computation of various TEM parameters for modeling power generators. This paper demonstrates the undergraduate engineering technology student-driven research at our university in this arena. It depicts the application of the multi-agent approach which allowed the student team to take full control of the project from inception to completion. The team developed and built a microprocessor based prototype thermo-electric generator for waste heat recovery (module and heat exchanger), computed and analyzed the optimal power delivery by judicious material selection. The dynamic model developed under MATLAB and COMSOL MultiPhysics environment with a consideration of its dependence on materials and temperature will be explored. The microcontroller manages and regulates other systems components. The autonomous device control by a micro-controller gives the flexibility to estimate the efficiency, power, voltage and current parameters and help validate the efficacy of the developed model under dynamic operating conditions resulting in optimum thermo-electric power generation. The ultimate design goal is to capture possible latent potential heat energy that tends to get lost from normal industrial mechanism processes thereby save energy and promote the modular design for satellites and space applications. It furnishes an alternative route for green energy with renewed design emphasis on semi-conductor technology instead of traditional analog mechanization. Finally, the results of the survey analyzing this learning methodology will also be discussed. This will go a long way in motivating engineering technology students to conduct potential future research, and reinforcing the best practices for life-long learning. ©

Robotics, autonomous transportation, and other computerized physical systems become widely accessible subjects for even a semester-long lecture and laboratory class. Sometimes, the physical systems are often transformed to cyber-physical systems (CPSs) by interfacing modules in physical systems to cyber system. It is often challenging for undergraduate students to implement a CPS comprising of analog and digital hardware and software within a limited period (e.g., ˜ 5 weeks) although they are accessible to highly automated development tools. In order to mitigate restrictions of a CPS development time and environment in a classroom, we have developed a comprehensive design and prototyping platform (CDPro) for rapidly designing and prototyping a miniature autonomous vehicle controlled via a cyber-control system as a CPS. The CDPro provides a real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation with virtual and real prototypes. In particular, the CDPro is capable of performing high accuracy real-time simulations. Based on the CDPro development, a course has been offered for three academic years to introduce the concept of the CDPro and synthesize hands-on analog and digital systems and hardware and software integration experiments. The CDPro is expected to mitigate time-consuming learning and utilize the different modeling and prototyping tools from various vendors for class activities. Purpose. Authentic engineering practice is often introduced to students through engineering problem-solving in the classroom. These problems usually have a single, correct answer and fail to guide students' problem framing against real-world parameters and constraints. In this paper, we present techno-economic modeling as a computer-based pedagogical tool in a sophomore chemical engineering course to connect students' collective inquiry activities to real-world consequences. Methodology. We conducted a study to illustrate how a techno-economic modeling tool can be used to enhance engineering reasoning within a collaborative environment. We aimed to answer the following research question: • How might techno-economic modeling enhance students' ability to empathize with the communities for which they design and support students to make informed design decisions? An algae biofuel design challenge was embedded into the sophomore material and energy balances course (n=56 in 10 teams) at a Hispanic-serving research university in the Southwest US. Wikis were used as a supporting collaborative tool for students to visually and textually report their knowledge and decisions on the three phases (growth of algal species, harvesting algae from water and extraction of oil from algae) of the challenge. Each team was assigned to investigate the economic feasibility of algal biofuel plant in a specific county. An open coding scheme was developed and used to analyze each teams' work on the economic feasibility of the algae biofuel plant. Results and Implications. Analyses revealed that all student teams investigated the effect of constraints, such as population size and resource availability on design parameters like the choice of carbon dioxide source and biofuel production rate. Teams used cost and environmental impact as critical decision criteria to make informed decisions about the various process technologies. Virtual simulations of operating tasks provide knowledge on a variety of parameters, useful for preventive ergonomic analysis, that helps to improve safety, quality and promote human-centered design. This paper presents the development of a biophysics-based simulation tool that is used for the evaluation of virtual interactions in different synthetic 3D scenes. Evaluation is based on the simulation of the motion of a digital human skeletal model interacting with virtual 3D objects, followed by inverse dynamics simulation of multi-body systems. This tool can be used for the estimation of body joints loads and energy expenditure during tasks’ operation in different environments, thereby allowing to detect potential risks in repetitive movement patterns and to adjust accordingly the object’s arrangement. Comparative results of spatiotemporal energy distribution support the validity of the simulation framework.

In the complex and safety-critical environment of the operating room the increasing use of technology and the interactions are significant causes for critical incidents and adverse events. Thus, the usability needs to be optimized, e.g. by enhancing the human-Machine-Interaction, the workflow and therefore the safety for users and patients. Hence, big companies offer integrated operation room systems, with harmonized safety- and HMI-concepts. Unfortunately, these systems come along with closed proprietary communication solutions. This prevents flexible design for the hospital operator and easy integration of medical equipment from small and medium-sized enterprises. To open this market, a safe and dynamic networking approach of medical devices has been established on the basis of an open communication standard (IEEE 11073-SDC). Within the *** follow-up project ZiMT (Certifiable integrated Medical Technology), a mobile control in addition to the central surgical workstation use concept has been developed. The requirement analysis for the tablet concept considers existing integrated OR systems and the development and evaluation of human-machine interfaces, regarding the usability engineering process as well as related standards (e.g. Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, DIN EN ISO 9241-110, IEC 62366). The graphical user interface provides inter alia a flexible und workflow-oriented assembly of a function group view. To evaluate the developed concept in comparison to the user interface of the workstation, an interaction-centered usability test with nine participants (surgeons and OR nurses) has been conducted. The results show a comparable effectiveness and efficiency. Moreover, the intuitiveness of the tablet control is estimated to be higher and most test subjects prefer to work with the tablet control.

Nowadays, reverse engineering is used in multiple professional fields that impel to develop different processes for obtaining virtual objects from real objects. Moreover, the importance of providing students with basic knowledge in this type of data collection processes increases, but sometimes the most sophisticated tools are not available because of their high cost and level of knowledge. Among the types of scans that can be found for three-dimensional reconstruction, there is an alternative based on the photogrammetry whose method is denominated Image-based 3D modeling and Rendering (IB3DMR), which uses a set of photographs in 2D to generate a three-dimensional digital model. With the aim of students learning the basics of scanning and three-dimensional reconstruction of objects, point clouds or mesh of an object, reverse engineering, exportation to other CAD formats and preparation of models for 3D printing, a series of activities with tools of low cost related to photogrammetry are proposed in this communication. This study was performed among students from three different subjects taught at the Technical University of Cartagena during the first term of the 2017/18 course: 'Industrial design' and 'Graphic Expression' (both from the Degree in Mechanical engineering), and 'Graphic Expression' (Degree in Industrial Technologies engineering). The obtained results demonstrate a high level of satisfaction and interest in this type of methodologies during the academic education of the students. Using this type of tools prepares students in new technologies and applications that are increasingly being implemented in all professional fields of society. Universities must be prepared for these new challenges and offer them as a complement to their academic education.

This paper presents a semi-automatic methodology to create abstract driver models to be used as formal reference when developing the firmware for embedded device drivers. Our methodology extracts the behavior of driver software automatically as an abstract finite state machine. This replaces manually crafting these models from informal specifications, which is error-prone, laborious, and does not account for undocumented behavior. Our approach specifically targets untrusted driver software that is only available as binary code, for example as third-party IP, and for which the source code is unknown. Our extracted model is formally sound with respect to the implementation, while still being understandable by a human developer. Our experiments for industry-size driver software demonstrate that human-readable, sound, abstract driver models can be extracted from binary code in affordable run times and with small manual effort.

Manual pipetting is still the main task laboratory technicians in the areas of chemistry, biology, and medicine perform daily. Prolonged manual pipetting may lead to Repetitive Stress Disorders (RSDs), Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs), or other musculoskeletal injuries due to force, repetitive movements, and awkward postures of the fingers and wrist. The purpose of this study is to evaluate different types of manual pipettes based on muscle activities and subjective discomforts. Specifically, thumb-push and finger-push pipettes are compared in several pipetting tasks. digital human modeling (DHM) was also utilized to compare the two pipette designs. The results from both experimental analysis and DHM showed that the finger-push design is more ergonomically-friendly and can reduce reduced muscle activities and discomfort in hand, arm and shoulder. We expect that the application of this study will contribute to the reduction of pain associated with pipetting by improving pipette design guidelines. © 2019 IISE Annual conference and Expo 2019. While the building industry has a major impact on the US economy, it is one that is often criticized for poor productivity and waste resulted from interoperability. Additionally, the impending labor shortage requires that this is industry becomes one that can do more with less in order to remain effective. As part of preparing civil engineering students for careers in this industry and to design/build infrastructure that is responsive to changing societal needs, educators have aimed to replicate the processes associated with real-world projects through design/build educational activities (like the Department of Energy's (DOE) Solar Decathlon, Sacramento Municipal Utility District's (SMUD) Tiny House Competition, and DOE's Challenge Home Competition) as part of helping students situate civil engineering concepts in an authentic learning environment. Unfortunately, not all universities have the financial resources necessary to fund these types of hands-on projects. Thankfully, technology has the potential to mitigate some of these inequities. This paper presents an update on a three-year NSF-funded project that aims to: develop mixed reality (MR) technology aimed at sufficiently replicating physical design and construction learning environments to enable access to students at institutions without sufficient resources;and assess the impact of a MR-facilitated cyberlearning environment on cognitive-, affective-, and skill-based learning that occurs during traditional (in-person) design and construction activities. human Centered design principles and the tenets of the Carnegie Foundation's Three Apprenticeships Model (i.e., learning related to "Head", "Hand", and "Heart") inform the design, development, and assessments in this project. Highlights from the first year and future plans will be discussed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2019
