Management of indoor hazards constitutes a great challenge for buildings design, construction and operating. The question is how to reduce both buildings vulnerability to indoor hazards and the impact of the latter on occupants and buildings integrity. Indoor hazards could result from different source such as fire, air pollution, water and gas leak, domestic accidents, appliances hazards, intrusion and break-out. Standards are already established for safety buildings design. However, in the operating phase, both occupants and buildings managers are subjected to serious indoor hazards, which could lead to significant human and material damages. The development of the digital technology such as Internet of Things (IoT), communication technology, indoor smart monitoring and Building Information modeling (BIM) offers a great opportunity to improve indoor safety. This paper presents the indoor hazards and how the smart technology could help in improving the indoor hazard management. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.

Computational Functional Failure Analysis to Identify human Errors During Early design Stages

Detection of potential failures and human error and their propagation over time at an early design stage will help prevent system failures and adverse accidents. Hence, there is a need for a failure analysis technique that will assess potential functional/component failures, human errors, and how they propagate to affect the system overall. Prior work has introduced functional failure identification and propagation (FFIP), which considers both human error and mechanical failures and their propagation at a system level at early design stages. However, it fails to consider the specific human actions (expected or unexpected) that contributed toward the human error. In this paper, we propose a method to expand FFIP to include human action/error propagation during failure analysis so a designer can address the human errors using human factors engineering principals at early design stages. The capabilities of the proposed method is presented via a hold-up tank example, and the results are coupled with digital human modeling to demonstrate how designers can use these tools to make better design decisions before any design commitments are made.

Computational human factors tools are often not fully integrated during the early phases of product design. Often, conventional ergonomic practices require physical prototypes and human subjects which are costly in terms of finances and time. Ergonomics evaluations executed on physical prototypes has the limitations of increasing the overall rework as more iterations are required to incorporate design changes related to human factors that are found later in the design stage, which affects the overall cost of product development. This paper proposes a design methodology based on digital human modeling (DHM) approach to inform designers about the ergonomics adequacies of products during early stages of design process. This proactive ergonomics approach has the potential to allow designers to identify significant design variables that affect the human performance before full-scale prototypes are built. The design method utilizes a surrogate model that represents human product interaction. Optimizing the surrogate model provides design concepts to optimize human performance. The efficacy of the proposed design method is demonstrated by a cockpit design study.

Given the fact that it is required to increase the efficiency of energy consumption in the premises, it is necessary to develop an effective lighting design that can be used both in old buildings and in new projects. To achieve a lower overall energy consumption by a building without sacrificing the quality of lighting, effective lighting modeling is needed, which allows to obtain reliable results for models as close as possible to real life, taking into account energy-saving lighting devices, integration of daylight in order to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, etc. The research evaluates possibility to measure luminance of light sources and detect sources of glare, using ordinary digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) and image editing software. Methodology and workflow is presented. The results then are discussed and ways to improve the accuracy of the measurements are highlighted.

As the smartphone market gradually becomes mature, smartphone appearance has become a prime factor in the consumer’s decision-making process when purchasing a smartphone. Based on the methodology of Kansei engineering, this paper aims at constructing a Kansei image rating system to evaluate smartphone appearance. Firstly, an initial Kansei image scale was constructed containing 36 word pairs selected from over 700 emotional ideological words from Chinese literature and interview. Secondly, the semantic difference experiment was conducted over 50 subjects to evaluated six smartphones with different appearances using the initial scale. Thirdly, three statistical analyses were applied to the experimental data to further optimize and weight the Kansei image scale, including project analysis, factor analysis, and AMOS structural equation modeling. Finally, we applied the overall weighed Kansei image rating system to evaluate the performance of the six smartphones on four dimensions: exquisiteness, balance, color and reliability. The results show that our weighted Kansei image rating system can be applied to future smartphone appearance evaluation and marketing prediction. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Dulong culture is an vivid and abundant part of the cultural heritage of minorities in China. The traditional protection methods are limited by time and space which can’t retain cultural treasures in a comprehensive and long-term manner. In this paper, we collect minority cultural by scanning, create models by SketchUp, real-time render by 3dsMax to enhance the three-dimensionality of the graphics. The user can recognize the immersive experience in the virtual scene through the palm fingertips and feel the charm of traditional culture anytime and anywhere. It breaks normal forms of cultural communication, such as traditional museum exhibitions, and improves the inheritance of Chinese culture greatly. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

The aims are direct touch of students to industry system, bring students and teachers industry experience, industry supports to improve school facilities and minimize the gap between the needs of industry competence and knowledge of the school. At the completion of teaching factory students should be able to working properly and having entrerpreneurship experience. This study aims to describe the teaching factory at fashion design vocational high school viewed from the aspects of the Business Model Canvas. There are the nine building blocks Business Model Canvas, among others Customer Segments, Value propositions, Channel, Customer Relations, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships and Cost *** study used qualitative methods. modeling by interviews using the Business Model Canvas building block. The results showed that should be improve in terms of the formation of new segmentation, exted distribution chanel to digital world, addition of value to the product, creating a customer relationship trough social media, key activities involving technology, partnership and networking, optimize resources and competent human resources placement As well as the improvement in terms of financial records. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The study contributes to cyber-physical system (CPS) modelling during a building life cycle. The framework through which systems engineers could design and construct these CPS requires an ontology and a structure of terms. Thus, the structure of terms for modern information system, including approaches, concepts and terms, is proposed as the basis of ontology. The task of the study was to present the model of CPS management structure in accordance with the Industry 4.0 program. In order to construct it the dynamics of the relationship of terms has been given. An infographic modeling method has been used in the study. The subject of research is one of the model levels, responsible for knowledge conversion from machine-digital to human-oriented form, which will be the basis for the operator's understanding of the knowledge accumulated by the CPS, and will help to make non-trivial management decisions. The structure of terms including approaches, concepts and terms, is proposed as the basis of ontology. The dynamics of the relationship of terms is given. Model of CPS management structure is presented in accordance with the Industry 4.0 program. The "Infographic models management" level specific to the CPS is defined. Three types of infographic slides which can be issued by CPS within the domain area of construction and design are proposed. © 2019 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Assessing user experience on a new vehicle design objectively is critical for an automotive company to improve customer satisfactory of its products. The technology of motion capture and digital human modeling has been utilized in many recent studies to assist in the design process of a new product. Motions of human interacting with a new product are captured or simulated. The human body trajectory and swept volumes of the motion are overlaid with the product geometry in CAD, providing a guidance for the direction of new design changes. However, a CAD system generally requires some training to be efficiently used to review a design. A more intuitive and easier approach is preferred. In recent years, Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) are taking root in engineering area. The technology provide great advantages to the applications of design review, process simulation, maintenance, and training, etc., by expanding the physical world with virtual components or helpful information. This paper presents a new method of motion-based immersive design system for vehicle occupant package that integrates the technologies of VR/AR and digital human modeling. The method incorporates human motions captured or simulated along with the new geometry of a vehicle compartment inside a VR/AR environment. Through this, the designer is able to not only immersively experience the new design, but also observe the behavior of different users interacting with the design in the 3D environment. It provides a systematic and intuitive approach for a designer to quickly iterate through the test-review-revise design cycle and achieve a more accommodating and occupant friendly vehicle compartment design.

The working environment of dredging engineering is volatile, and distribution of dredged soil is complex. Moreover, dredging engineering management involves a variety of professional disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, etc. While it is hard to provide the information of soil properties and involve project schedule using the traditional two-dimensional (2D) design mode. Moreover, it is also difficult to exchange information and get feedback using the pipeline operation. Combined with BIM (Building Information modeling) concept, BIM collaborative modeling and analysis system for dredging engineering during the survey and design stages is developed. The system includes four modules: three-dimensional (3D) modeling, production capacity prediction, dredging engineering design and analysis, and database management. In the 3D modeling module, 3D soil model can be built rapidly, and parametric modeling of family components, such as dredging channel model, dredging cofferdam is realized. In the production capacity prediction module, the production capacity of cutter suction dredger can be predicted with a high accuracy. 3D modeling module and production capacity prediction module provide 3D digital engineering model and production capacity of dredger to support the dredging engineering design and analysis module, in which dredging quantity calculation, project schedule adjustment analysis (i.e., Four-dimensional BIM, referred to as 4D BIM), sectioning analysis, 2D sketch output, automatic generation of engineering scheme design report can be carried out.
