The objective of this paper is to develop and integrate a learning module on Electric Motors modeling, Control and Testing (EMMCT) into the Electrical engineering Technology (EET) and Mechanical engineering Technology (MET) programs. Preparing future engineers to work in highly automated production requires proper education and training in mechatronics theory and applications. Although engineering Technology programs at various universities offer various courses related to the controls, electrical motors, and automation, they are not including the same methods when it comes to the selection of appropriate electrical motor for a specific application in mechatronic system. MET student do have exposure to the electrical systems in the various courses that are offered at their lower division level courses. However, these methods have to be further emphasized and applied in the upper level courses as well. This paper will present one such application and a learning module that is focused on the Electric Motors modeling, Control and Testing (EMMCT). This module can be integrated in various controls, mechatronics, robotics, senior design and capstone courses. © American Society for engineering Education, 2017.

The border between tangible and digital products is getting more diffuse, and the design methodologies are converging to a more comprehensive and holistic approach in that sense. The output of these novel innovation processes is often a digital entity like an app or a physical object. For users and consumers, it is important to keep a fluid interface between hardware and software assuring a proper and effective user experience (UX) during all user interaction (UI). This work uses review-centric research to identify from theory, a set of innovation and technological capabilities used in the product design stage of software development, and explores onto which of them are common to the tangible product design. The capabilities were grouped in three dimensions: organizational (human and strategy), structural (technology and knowledge management) and relationships (partnerships and transfer). Agile methodologies, rapid application development (RAD), scrum frameworks, lean development, Unified modeling Language (UML), and other software industry tools were used as examples of design capability resources alongside new product development (NPD) and its product design and strategy generation tools for project development in tangible/non-tangible products like QFD, Stage-Gate, TRIZ, etc. A model of a common product development cycle for both tangible and software products is displayed showing their similarity and how they connect.

Learning is integrative lifelong process which requires continuous refreshing of old material and learning new material. This principle holds also for student experiences during their undergraduate studies. Students learn new material throughout their studies, and they may or may not have opportunity to use the material in different context and at different levels. As a result some of the acquired knowledge may be forgotten by the time student graduates or it may not be placed in the context of the overall program outcomes, thus material presented may not seem to have relevance to student's career. An effective method to address this issue is a required capstone course that combines a number of different disciplines into a single comprehensive experience. In addition to required capstone experience, authors have collaborated in development of an elective course on modeling and simulation of mechatronic systems. The course introduces modern computer tools and techniques which integrates number of different areas including statics, strength of materials, dynamics, electrical systems, fluid systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, thermal systems, and control systems. The course provides several benefits including review of material covered at different stages of the undergraduate program, connecting different fields by analyzing mechatronic systems, and introduction to the tools that enable students to solve real world problems that cannot be solved analytically. Although some courses introduce the basics of modern computer tools, most do not have sufficient time to devote to modern computer tools. Hence, the introduction of a modeling and simulation course of mechatronic systems in the engineering technology program provides an opportunity to further improve the quality of the program and satisfy a number of ABET related learning outcomes. © American Society for engineering Education, 2017.

This paper describes a methodological human centered approach during handgun design. For evaluation of reach distances to handgun controls (trigger, slide stop, magazine catch) a digital human models and ergonomic software were used. With these digital human models a variety of minimal, maximal and average reach distance for Americans, Europeans and Asians were proposed. Distances for American and European population were used for creation of a handgun functional sample. Test shooting performed with this functional sample was evaluated by a questionnaire which was filled by 18 male members of armed forces. These responses evaluated the suitability of functional sample and identified specific parameters for future improvement. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

Increasing interest in exploration of virtual worlds has lead to the creation of hundreds of such environments and it's expansion especially in the field of education. A large number of research have focused on analyzing experiences of the use of this virtual worlds environment to the need of education. Instead of research to the design and production process of the virtual world and how it use is still relatively minimal. The purpose of this study was to design a virtual world environment and identify important themes in it according to the needs of teacher and student at this time, with the aim of assisting the teacher as information providers and educators as well as student make the learning process more fun. Model of virtual world environment are design as a product of this research. Vidyanusa e-learning system is a system that quite complex because of many themes include learning activities and subsystem to support the collaboration of the themes events. Therefore, to realize the implementation of this system, will required support from all sector of society, equitable dissemination, and use of ready use resources. Virtual world environment model are made considering of priority themes of the learning process derived from some teacher of junior highschool (SMP) in Bandung. This model explains the role of virtual world environment which differ from teacher, provide ideas and creativity on students, and suggestions for effective and efficient learning process. It can be used as starting point or as a checklist for planning and producing and ideal educational system. With some modification, the modeling process can be used in other case of virtual world environment as well. The introduction of vidyanusa e-learning system using new technologies as medium of teaching and learning, is expected to improve the quality of human resources of its most important life-phase which is the initial phase of formal education and disipline.

Ergonomically unsuited backpacks tend to cause spine and bone structure based dysfunctionalities, especially on an average high school student's fast developing skeleton. Carrying heavy backpacks by school students should be avoided to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. In this paper, we study the ergonomic risks among high school students in a local school district. The research includes literature review, survey design, data collection, data analysis, digital human modeling (DHM), and recommendations. The survey includes 21 different questions under three categories: human physical characteristics, health history, and school and backpack information. DHM simulations are created to assess the impact of the different factors such as backpack weight, carrying position, and human physical characteristics. The results provide recommendations for avoiding ergonomic risks caused by carrying backpacks among high school students.

Traditional construction site monitoring primarily relies on a human presence. Automated construction progress monitoring is expected to make this process much more efficient and precise. The planned state of construction (as-planned) must be validated by the actual state (as-built) during automated construction progress monitoring. This research uses an integrated application of high-resolution low-altitude UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) oblique photogrammetry and Building Information modeling (BIM) technologies for construction site management. A case study was carried out for a renewable energy development program in the JiaDing District of Shanghai, China. A high-resolution 3D model of the construction site acquired by our multi-motor UAV provides data to illustrate the as-built state of the construction program. Comparison of the UAV-based 3D model (as-built) with the BIM-based 3D model (as-planned) for a specific chimney was used for dynamic construction site monitoring. Our results show 3D illustrations of construction progress. This research demonstrates that the BIM technology in conjunction with the use of UAV photogrammetry provides efficient and precise as-built data collection and illustration of construction progress.

There is a need to automate stochastic uncertainty quantification codes in the digital age. Problems in turbomachinery Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are characterised by non-linear and discontinuous responses and long run times. Ensuring the reliability of Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) codes in such conditions, in an autonomous way, is a challenging problem. human involvement has always been required. In this work, we therefore suggest a new approach that combines three state-of-the-art methods: multivariate Pade approximations, Optimal Quadrature Subsampling and Statistical Learning. Its main component is the generalised least squares multivariate Pade-Legendre (PL) approximation. PL approximations are globally fitted rational functions that can accurately describe discontinuous non-linear behaviour. They need fewer model evaluations than local or adaptive methods and do not cause the Gibbs phenomenon, like continuous Polynomial Chaos methods. We describe a series of modifications of the Pade algorithm that allow us, to apply it to arbitrary input points instead of optimal quadrature locations. This property is particularly useful for industrial applications, where a database of CFD runs is already available, but not in optimal parameter locations. One drawback of the PL approximation is that it is non-trivial to ensure reliability for multiple input parameters. We therefore suggest a new method to improve stability in this work: Optimal Quadrature Subsampling. Our argument is that least squares errors, caused by an ill-conditioned design matrix, are the main source of error. Finally, we use statistical learning techniques to automatically guarantee smoothness and convergence. The resulting method is shown to efficiently and correctly fit thousands of partly discontinuous response surfaces for an industrial film cooling and shock interaction problem automatically and using only 9 CFD simulations.
