This work presents a modern approach to human Factors engineering enabling integrated simulation and human evaluation of early prototypes of flight deck systems in a immersive environment. The presented approach introduces pragmatic considerations regarding cognitive engineering frameworks such as Cognitive Work Analysis and Hierarchical Analysis for practical use with computational system simulations, laying down the foundation for efficient, quantitative human Factors analysis in early product design phases. This principle is further demonstrated through a decentralized implementation leveraging the advantages of semantically connecting an immersive Virtual Reality environment with system simulations and semi-automated human factor analysis modules. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Ergonomics is the science of human work. One goal is the adaption of work to the human, thus to create better working conditions and to avoid health risks. Increasingly often, digital human models and corresponding evaluation methods are used. Due to the mass of data and the variety of possible analyses which come along with a simulation, the interpretation of the outcomes can take a long time. We introduce a new concept, which enables a quick and understandable visualization and navigation of critical ergonomic situations and their causes. There are filter mechanisms available for changing the level of detail. These enable a representation for specific target groups. Prior to the development of the concept, expert interviews were conducted to specify the user requirements. Each iteration step of the design process was evaluated in cooperation with ergonomics experts. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The research work presented in this paper is part of an innovative framework that deals with the design process of lower limb prostheses. The quality of the whole prosthesis depends on the comfort of the socket, which realizes the interface between the patient body and the mechanical parts. We developed a CAD system, named Socket Modelling Assistant that guides the user during the design of the socket, exploiting domain knowledge and design rules. In this work we present a preliminary study that describes the implementation of a software module able to automatically identify the critical areas of the residuum to adequately modify the socket model and reach the optimal shape. Once the critical areas have been identified, the Socket Modelling Assistant can apply proper geometry modifications, in order to create the load and off-load zones for a good pressure distribution over the residual limb. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015

The use of lightweight aluminum construction has become prevalent in marine structures and it is therefore critical that the performance of such structures in the inelastic regime be characterized. A key aspect of this is the ductile fracture behavior of panels and structural details. Here, the results of ductile fracture tests conducted on large pre-notched aluminum panels seeking to characterize this inelastic response and resulting fracture are reported. Plates fabricated from 5083-H116 and 6061-T6 panels, including a welded panel, were tested with a geometry designed to induce macro-plasticity prior to fracture. Testing was performed using a newly developed heavy steel fixture of sufficient rigidity and included the use of digital Image Correlation (DIC) strain measurement. Through extensive data collection and analysis, the full extent and severity of plastic deformation prior to fracture were obtained. It is anticipated that this data will be of utility in the calibration and validation of numerical modeling of ductile fracture in large structures. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2015.

This research enhance proper gamification scenerios for future Mars missions. Scenarios include mars atmosphere and surface design, cubesat Mars orbiter, micro flying robot demonstration, in-situ research support, human health risk reduction, digital 3D printing and hands-on rover experiments. The scheduled Mars mission concepts consisting of gamification allow the first uncrewed orbital return with Orion around 2024. The forecasted crewed mission can be realized in early 2030. The next generation workforce development for Mars exploration is presented from 2014 IPMC Young Professional workshop "entering and growing into the space sector" group findings, 2014 OECD Space report and NASA APPEL studies. The workshop findings compare young professional development in academia, industry and government. In addition, findings are classified under student, K12 education, boss relations, sociological conditions and global workforce demand data. OECD report show total space economy is $256B US dollars in 2013. NASA APPEL and CKO has new knowledge map for NASA to unite people and systems in sustainable and effective way. The groundwork of the young professional development and impacts of gamification are comprehended by self-knowledge management and decision making. A technique of parameter personalization of a 1d hemodynamic model is discussed and validated against physiological data of 1546 examined patients. Different parameter combinations were used, with the quality of prediction of the systolic and diastolic pressures used as the principle validation criterion. It is shown that with an appropriate personalization the model can provide adequate predictions (correlations near 0.9), where the decisive role is played by the total peripheral resistance parameter. Meanwhile parameters of the largest arteries do not play a significant role in the prediction.

Improper design for the grip structure will lead to inefficient operation or work injuries. The study purpose was to simulate the shape, size, and position of a gripping structure by using a 30 kg rectangular box as a heavy object, to enhance the health and comfort for an operator. Ergonomic evaluation experiments for grip structural factors were performed by samples testing and virtual simulation methods for operational tasks. Research methods and results in this study have some reference meanings and guidance for the man-machine adaptation design regarding the shape, size, and location of manual handling gripping structure of products, supplies and equipment. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Now a day's use of portable devices increasing more. Such as cellular phones, digital cameras and high efficient power managing modules etc. are demanding for low output voltage ripple with fast transient response. The terminal voltage of the battery used in portable applications varies particularly depending on state of their charging conditions. In this paper, Li-ion battery is considered that provides 4.2V when it is fully charged and drops to 2.7V when fully discharged. However, the system requires a constant output voltage of 3.3V under varying load conditions. Thus, this work addresses the design and modeling of voltage controlled positive output synchronous buck-boost converter. Simulation model is developed using MATLAB/Simulink and results analysis has been carried out. © 2015 IEEE.
