Courses in digital logic design are required by most electrical engineering and computer engineering programs and by many computer science programs. Typically, these courses cover logic design fundamentals in lectures with applications and technology covered in the laboratory. As new technologies emerge, it is becoming more and more challenging to incorporate all of the desired material in a single three or four semester credit hour (SCH) course. At the same time, many programs are being required to reduce degree requirements and cut support staff making it difficult to accommodate a second course in digital logic. This paper describes a sophomore-level, four SCH logic design course that strikes a balance between these conflicting requirements. The results and experience gained from our course have demonstrated that it is feasible to successfully cover in one semester a range and depth of topics that many universities spread over two semesters. Thusly, other universities facing constraints on curricular requirements and instructional resources may find our approach of interest and beneficial. The course features a semester-long project to design a four-bit, four-function computer processing unit, implemented and tested on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). An incremental, hierarchical design approach is employed so that the results of lab exercises can be integrated to produce the final design. design work is captured and simulated in software, and some designs are implemented using integrated circuits on solder-less breadboards. This approach gives students hands-on experience constructing, testing, and debugging circuits that cannot be gained from FPGA implementation. Laboratory assignments are introduced during lectures, linking fundamentals covered in the lectures with hands-on experiences, allowing earlier inclusion of interesting and meaningful laboratory exercises. This joint project applied MATLAB and Simulink to improve courses for Metabolic engineering, Parameter Estimation for engineering, Process Dynamics and Control, and a Process Control Laboratory in the Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical engineering (EECE) at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) in 2011-2013. The project also improved the existing bioengineering courses in the Department of Biosystems & Agricultural engineering (BAE) at Michigan State University (MSU), specifically Microbial Systems engineering and Analysis of Biological Systems in 2012 similar to 2014. Both MATLAB and Simulink were used in these courses. More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students per year from both universities have been enrolled in the classes in the past two years. The teaching approach was to introduce MATLAB and Simulink to bioengineering courses. Using computational modeling tools, students developed the equations for various applications in systems biology and bioengineering, solved the forward and the inverse problems, used Simulink to perform process control/design of engineering projects, and finally optimized bioprocesses (both static and dynamic modes) using MATLAB tool boxes. Moreover, students were exposed to real experiments in the bio-reaction lab where data were collected. For all courses, each student had a MathWorks-supplied license to use all necessary toolboxes. The class material is designed to teach bioengineering students multiple-scale modeling skills in both bioprocess engineering and systems biology so that they can have a holistic understanding of both scale-up fermentation engineering design and the microbial metabolism in response to bioreactor heterogeneity. Such skills are especially valuable for students looking to work in bioprocessing companies. A 3D Shenzhen city web platform based on WE-BVRGIS is presented. A 3D globe browser is employed to load all kinds of demanded data of the city, such as 3D building model data, residents information, real-time and historical traffic data. Using these data, the 3D analysis and visualization of the concerned city massive information are conducted in the platform. All the presented functions of the platform are extracted from the practical customer demand. The system design has considered some existing Geographic human-computer interaction (GeoHCI) research results.

The National Academy of engineering suggests that K-12 engineering education should focus on the process of engineering design1. Similarly, the Next Generation Science Standards incorporate engineering design processes alongside scientific inquiry in K-12 settings2 . Using engineering design as a medium through which to learn related STEM content has shown promise3 yet it may be difficult for precollege instructors to incorporate into their practice because many K-12 teachers and students lack explicit exposure to engineering design. Students who do engage in engineering projects often rely on trial-and-error approaches that may or may not connect to deeper conceptual understanding, or focus heavily on building structures without engaging in other design processes4. modeling engineering design explicitly can help students develop design fundamentals, much like the principles of cognitive apprenticeship or explicit models of inquiry 5,6. WISengineering is an online learning environment that scaffolds engineering design for precollege students with demonstrated learning outcomes7. Instructional modules within WISengineering guide students through hands-on design projects. In addition to providing students with opportunities to engage with CAD and digital fabrication technologies, projects within WISengineering are structured to correspond with authentic engineering design processes (i.e. iteration, generating multiple solutions, prototyping, etc.) using an informed engineering design pedagogy8. This study investigates what kinds of engineering design processes middle school students engage in with WISengineering. Although projects in WISengineering suggest a sequence of steps to complete design projects, students can navigate freely within the environment. Using log data from students engaged in a Community Garden design project, we will investigate how scaffolding informed engineering design can help students become involved in engineering design processes. Posture prediction is a key component in digital human modeling and simulation. Deterministic optimization-based posture prediction formulations have been proposed. However, there exist uncertainties in human anthropometric (human height, link length, center of mass of segments, and moment of inertia, etc.) and environment parameters (location, interaction force), which affects the predicted posture. This paper attempts to study the effect of uncertainty on predicted posture. The single-loop reliability based design optimization (RBDO) method is adapted to predict posture under uncertainties. All random parameters are assumed to have normal distribution. A 24-degree of freedom (DOF) upper body model is used. In this pilot study, it is assumed that one link length and one joint angle are random parameters. The other design variables and parameters are deterministic. With the empirical rule, three cases are investigated for posture prediction. SNOPT software solver is employed to solve the optimization problem. Through comparison with deterministic optimization result and experimental data, the predicted postures from RBDO simulation show that the reliability index affects the predicted posture to some extent.

This article proposes methodologies and applications for sustainability solutions through usability. Usability and sustainability are defined in the context of human factors and ergonomics. Economic, social and ecological considerations form the basis for the three leg platform for sustainable development. A return to fundamentals in human factors, ergonomics and industrial and operations engineering can provide insight into effective implementation of sustainability solutions. Principles such as learning curves and economies of scale are highlighted in the context of sustainable energy. It is also suggested that exposure-response curves can be derived using Bayesian networks, giving insight into potential causal effects in existing ecotoxicology data. Ergonomists have used these tools in the past to evaluate performance of other engineering implementations while toxicology can initially provide some common basis for the historical and modern view of ergonomics in the context of sustainability. Sustainability can benefit from such tools that can evaluate potential interventions under uncertainty. From other engineering literature it appears that technical solutions are already available to support sustainability, while the lag may be occurring in coordinating the social, organizational and cultural response. Lessons learned in human factors and ergonomics can support sustainability related interventions building on experience in human-system interface design and visualizations that have been an integral part of the digital human modeling community especially over the last two decades.

Power system restoration after a blackout is an urgent and complicated task. In order to enhance the resilience and self-healing capabilities of a smart grid, an advanced decision tool is needed. This paper introduces a real-time decision support system for power grid restoration which can recognize the blackout scenario and generate the restoration scheme automatically. A local object optimization method and a leader-follower hierarchical coordination strategy are proposed to make multiple temporal-spatial restoration decisions. The system can provide real-time data analysis, network modeling, database support, core decision service, diverse human-machine interaction and perfect function of security check. A restoration simulation module is developed and a case library is built, so it can also be used to dispatcher training in off-line mode. The application in Shandong power grid of China verifies the practicality and reliability of this system.

Lessons learned from case studies have had a significant impact on both education and practice of engineering and related disciplines. The history of practice in civil engineering is, in large part, the story of failures, both imminent and actual, and ensuing changes to designs, standards and procedures made as the result of timely interventions or forensic analyses. In addition to technical issues, professional and ethical responsibilities are highlighted by the relevant cases. Over the past five years the project extended the work of implementing and assessing case studies from Cleveland State University to eleven other university partners, and broadened the scope to cover engineering disciplines in addition to civil engineering, as well as the NSF Materials digital Library. This paper reports on the results from including case studies in various courses at a diverse data set of universities. Student learning was assessed through surveys and focus group discussions. Students were asked specifically about the technical lessons learned, as well as their response to the case studies. Case study questions were included on homework assignments and examinations. Survey questions linked student achievement to learning outcomes. This year, the data from student focus groups and surveys of faculty that teach with case studies have been investigated as well. Case studies have potential for positive impacts in the affective domain as well as in the cognitive domain. The results have been evaluated against the ABET general student outcomes (criterion 3) as well as the Civil engineering specific curriculum requirements. The results are also compared to the 2nd Edition of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Civil engineering Body of Knowledge as well as the ASCE Vision 2025. Furthermore, a number of workshops on incorporating failure case studies have been offered at ASEE annual meetings and elsewhere. Those workshops have helped shape the course of this research.

In this digital era, the natures of services are becoming increasingly complex and diverse due to the convergences between the existing human-centered services and other supportive device services, or interactions between heterogeneous services. Expecting this trend is to be accelerated more, new scientific and engineered approaches to the service design are needed more than ever. In this context, a service designed conceptually and abstractly has significant limitations that keep the customers' satisfaction from advancing above a certain level. Hence, in an initial service design phase, a service delivery process can be expressed quantitatively through a systematic analysis of its natures and the goals. In this paper, a human-centered complex service system is newly defined as service ecosystem. This study proposes a method for designing service processes as a Discrete Event System (DES) in formal ways by utilizing the concepts of affordance, preference, and a Affordance-based Finite State Automata (FSA) modeling methodology. The proposed design method suggests a model framework that focuses on service actions that reflects related properties of customers, employees, and environment entities and their interactions quantitatively. The formally expressed relations between properties of service entities such as customer, employee, and service environment provide guidelines for service designers in a more scientific way than traditional ones. In addition, it is expected that it will enable to add computational to the human-centered service system design and control and develop effective reusable controllers for complex service deliveries as well.
