To generate graphic simulation of human motion, marker-based optical motion capture technology is widely used because of the accuracy and reliability of motion data provided by this technology. However, tracking of human motion without markers is very desirable on the factory floor because the human operator does not need to wear a special suit mounted with markers and there is no physical interference with the manufacturing or assembly operation during the motion tracking. In this paper, we compare marker-based and markerless motion capture systems. First, the operational principles of these two different types of systems are compared. Then the quality of motion data obtained by a marker-less system using Kinect is compared with that obtained by a marker-based system using Optitrack cameras. The comparison also includes the accuracy of body joint angles and variations in body segment lengths measured by the two different systems. Furthermore, we compare the human motion simulation developed in the Jack digitalhumanmodeling software using the data captured by these two systems when a person is performing a fastening operation on a physical mockup of the belly section of an aircraft fuselage.

Current user interface modeling languages usually focus on modeling a single user interface and have a fixed set of user interface components;adding another user interface component requires an extension of the language. In this paper we present CASSIS, a concise language that supports creation of user interface components using models instead of language extensions. It also allows the specification of design-time and runtime user interface variations. The support for variations has been used to generate constraints for custom user interface components, to specify design patterns and design decisions. CASSIS has been used in several projects including a multi-disciplinary applied research project.

This paper refers to the integration of simulations tools to assess the design of prosthetic devices. We address issues arising when the prosthesis needs to be virtually tested, i.e., the gait of the virtual patient wearing the prosthesis. Therefore, we integrate two different simulation tools: the first one to study the interaction between socket and residual limb during the gait and the second one to analyze the patient's gait deviations. Combining these numerical analyses, it is possible to investigate the causes of gait deviations and suggest remedies, both related to the prosthesis setup and the socket modeling. To prove the validity of the approach, we implemented a Finite Element Analysis model to analysis the stump-socket contact and we assembled a low cost Motion Capture system to acquire and elaborate patient gait. Preliminary results and remarks conclude the paper.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are becoming increasingly common in healthcare settings. The occurrence of WMSDs in healthcare is supported by studies of the American Nurses Association and the American Hospital Association. In particular, patient handling activities, such as lifting using a wide variety of techniques, have been found to lead to various types of WMSDs among the nursing staff. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to simulate and evaluate patient Under-arm lifting tasks from an ergonomic perspective using digitalhumanmodeling. In this experimental design-based study, clinical staff's gender (CSG), clinical staff's weight and height (CSWH) were used as independent variables. The output of the comfort assessment (CA) and rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) toolkits were used as dependent variables. The results showed that trunk thighs, knees and foot calves are the most uncomfortable parts of the lifter during the patient lifting process. Moreover, according to RULA, female clinical staff may experience less discomfort during Under-arm lifting tasks than male clinical staff. The results of this research can assist hospital administrators in designing more effective patient lifting protocols.
