University art and design programs are branching out and creating interdisciplinary programs and research centers that connect design students and faculty across various disciplines such as business, engineering, architecture, information studies, health sciences and education. A human-centered, problem-based approach to design research looks to position industry and academic leaders to work alongside students, community leaders, artists and non-profits to develop creative and innovative solutions to the challenges facing contemporary society. But product design benefits even more from practices that engage users throughout the entire design process, often called participatory design. Participatory design process utilizes user feedback throughout the design process to spur innovation and improve design quality. It is possible in the classroom to engage in participatory design and participatory prototyping through the use of inexpensive 3D printers and laser cutters as well as traditional hand tools, requiring only mastery of a few simple techniques and technology readily available on laptop computers. The class research being presented was conceived as part of a new interdisciplinary classroom research space call the digital Craft Research Lab (DCRL) housed within the department of Art and design. Courses taught within the DCRL offer students, researchers and faculty continual access to both low resolution and high-resolution prototyping machinery and materials. This paper looks at the role of action and participatory research in a design course that created printed hand innovations in collaboration with a nine-year-old female user. Students were asked to work on modeling new designs as well as capturing the progress in a final open source book and models. collaboration, action research and work spaces encourage creativity, innovation, and critical thinking in student and professional designers?

Semantic feature extraction technique for human bodies is essential for some application, such as reverse engineering, mannequin dimensions extraction and parametric design of mannequins. This paper present a method on 2D orthographic projection to extract the semantic feature of 3D human model. Firstly, we get the human models orthographic projection and use a new intelligent contour tracking algorithm to get the ordered silhouettes. Secondly, semantic features of the human body model are extracted from the silhouettes which is ordered by CCW counter clockwise before in orthographic projection. Compared with earlier approach, our method pointedly has avoided the complex extracted for 3D mesh surface, and both the robustness and the efficiency of the algorithm are improved.

An adaptive secondary-side digital control is proposed for the series resonant converter to solve the loss of ZVS under certain input and load conditions, making it a good candidate for MHz 48V voltage regulators (VRs). By means of varying AC equivalent resistance, the output voltage regulation is achieved by controlling the duty cycle of the synchronous MOSFET. An additional control variable has added complexity to circuit analysis, modeling and controller design, since the state variables such as the inductor current and capacitor voltage are AC domain. A sine-cosine transformation is applied to these AC resonant state variables, correspondingly, the resonant circuit can be decomposed into two subcircuits under sine and cosine axes at each harmonics frequency of interest. The transformed state space model can be used for the large signal and small signal analysis for the series resonant converter with the secondary-side control. A power circuit is designed based on the large signal analysis and a feedback controller is designed based on the derived small signal model. Simulation and experimental results verify the validation of the design.

modeling the effects of digital control and digital PWM can be complex for power converters with multiple switches and unique PWM switching schemes; hence an approach of measuring the plant and open loop response is typically followed to verify the modeling or use frequency response data to identify the plant. This paper presents a cycle efficient software frequency response analyzer (SFRA), that is added to the software of the digital controller being used to control the power converter. SFRA needs no extra hardware connections and hence can be run periodically. The gathered frequency response data can be used to correlate with the health and changes in stability margins of the power converter; which can change due to aging and degradation of components caused by electrical and thermal stresses. The paper compares fixed and floating point implementation of SFRA and discusses a dual core approach to run SFRA for high switching frequency power converters. A bi-directional buck boost converter is used as a case study to demonstrate the SFRA, where first SFRA is used to extract the plant TF, which is then used to design the compensation and the designed compensation is then verified using SFRA.

In this study, anthropometric data of 1243 vehicle drivers were sampled and the their age was from 17 to 34 years and averaged 21.85±2.82years. 76 anthropometric static parameters and 11 functional parameters were studied. The 76 static parameters were measured with the Non-contact 3d human boy scanners of VITUS SMART XXL systems while the 11 functional parameters were measured manually with Martin measuring scale. The correlation and fitting formulas of body height, sitting height and other parameters were measured and obtained. We also contrasted measured data with data form GJB 1835-1993. The present analysis showed that the correlation between sizes of body length and sitting height was significant. Sizes of body length and enclosing size and width direction were all increased compared to those in the 1980s. The present results were consistent with other researchers' current research results. The measured data could be an important basis for the data of young male anthropometric parameters and edition of relative standard and design of specific equipment. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The small-signal modeling of dual active bridge (DAB) converter dynamics in discrete time is a useful analysis tool due to the ability to incorporate behavior during zero-voltage switching (ZVS) intervals explicitly, and is advantageous for the direct design of digital compensators. While the control-to-output transfer function has been modeled previously, accurate models of the output impedance of the DAB converter which account for the converter behavior during switching intervals have not been proposed. A discrete time model of the DAB output impedance is developed and tested against experimental results for a 1 MHz, 50-to-4 V, 10 W DAB converter. The model is then extended to the analysis of load current step changes asynchronous to the discrete time sampling instances.

With the growing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in civilian airspace, design and development of this type of aircraft requires a thorough study of its dynamics in order to demonstrate airworthiness of such a system. This paper describes the first step in the development of an unmanned version of the SA160 aircraft by presenting a fully-coupled 6 DoF model of the SA160 aircraft. As the aerodynamic parameters are evaluated with inflight data using the SIDPAC (System Identification Program for AirCraft) software, the problem addressed in this paper is the validation of a predictive model for the dynamic response of the SA160 based on identified parameters. In this work, a state-space representation is used for the dynamic modeling of the SA160 single-engine aircraft. The a priori unknown aerodynamic coefficients are first estimated using a digital Datcom (U.S. Air Force digital Data Compendium) model. These coefficients are used as initial estimates for the output-error method. The effect of the rotating propeller on the aircraft dynamics is included in order to account for aerodynamic and inertial coupling. The dynamic model is based on the small-disturbance theory, so that aircraft motion is simulated around equilibrium flight conditions. Furthermore, the dynamic model elaborated in this paper is based on dimensionless linearized equations. The main goal is to demonstrate that the state-space model parameters identified through flight test program provide reliable and accurate dynamic model. System identification techniques are then used with in-flight data from an instrumented aircraft. Instrumentation includes an air data boom and an inertial measurement unit fitted to the SA160 in order to get a full set of in-flight aerodynamic and 6 DoF dynamic data. Power system restoration after a blackout is an urgent and complicated task. In order to enhance the resilience and self-healing capabilities of a smart grid, an advanced decision tool is needed. This paper introduces a real-time decision support system for power grid restoration which can recognize the blackout scenario and generate the restoration scheme automatically. A local object optimization method and a leader-follower hierarchical coordination strategy are proposed to make multiple temporal-spatial restoration decisions. The system can provide real-time data analysis, network modeling, database support, core decision service, diverse human-machine interaction and perfect function of security check. A restoration simulation module is developed and a case library is built, so it can also be used to dispatcher training in off-line mode. The application in Shandong power grid of China verifies the practicality and reliability of this system.

This paper presents a methodology of an electronic ballasts design for UV lamps filtering system, providing adjustable UV dose in order to ensure the inactivation of microorganisms' reproduction that are harmful to human health and can be present in drinking water. The project methodology is based on a so called MSSS model, used for defining the ultraviolet radiation applied to penstock purifiers, using immersed lamps on a water slide enclosure, which in combination with the hydraulic behavior, provide a good perspective of the microorganisms UV absorption along the entire purifier ducts structure. In addition, a water purifier was designed using CAD model, where hydrostatic simulations were applied to ensure compliance with the NSF/ANSI Standard 55, which provides drinking water directions for commercial and residential environments.

Considering nonlinear and energy dissipation characteristics of STATCOM, realization of the generalized Hamiltonian system based on the model of system, and design nonlinear controller. This paper discussed the generalized Hamiltonian system and its realization, and established nonlinear dynamic model according to the work principle of STATCOM, completed realization of the generalized Hamiltonian system. Based on the generalized Hamiltonian system of STATCOM, the paper quoted control method of L2 interference rejection, design nonlinear controller of STATCOM which is operating in the system of single load and infinite. digital simulation results show that the controller is very effective.
