A multi-chip custom digital super-computer called eBrain for simulating Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) model of the human brain has been proposed. It uses Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC), the 3D stacked DRAM memories for storing synaptic weights that are integrated with a custom designed logic chip that implements the BCPNN model. In 22nm node, eBrain executes BCPNN in real time with 740 TFlops/s while accessing 30 TBs synaptic weights with a bandwidth of 112 TBs/s while consuming less than 6 kWs power for the typical case. This efficiency is three orders better than general purpose supercomputers in the same technology node.

Biomechanical study of foot force pattern in Hallux Valgus (HV) patients

Background: Hallux valgus is the angulation of the big toe of more than 15 degrees. Many people during their lives are challenged with this condition. The occurrence is 3 times more in women to men. However one of the causes of the condition is congenital but the other important factor is wearing narrow toe box and high heel shoes. There are some devices measuring the foot kinematic or sole pressure for identifying such condition but as there are lots of variations in foot kinematics and pressure the identification of the disease becomes more challenging. Many previous works are published regarding to foot sole pressure pattern but still early recognition of the condition is needed. Method: To see the existence of force pattern out of gait experiments, Rs-Scan device used to take the kinematic data of the one complete foot contact. 10 trials were conducted of each volunteer with the full right foot contact with the pressure mat. 3 valid trials have been chosen for final analyses. With this method the load/pressure measurement under the 10 anatomical regions of the foot have been recorded and used to recognise people with and without deformity. Furthermore, Motion Capture cameras were used to capture the first and the second metatarsal movements in HV and Non HV volunteers to see whether there is a joint laxity of the metatarsals in HV patients. Results: It was observed that the load pattern in forefoot in people with HV was significantly different compared to non HV *** independent sample T-Test done and the statistical difference less than 0.05 observed in Toe1,Metatarsal 1,Metatarsal 2, Metatarsal 3, Metatarsal 4 and Metatarsal 5. So just there was no difference load pattern on the Toe 2-5. Hence, the maximum load was on the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal heads in people with HV which is already published by previous authors but the walking speed showed a significant effect on the force variations in both group. "Ikebana" is one of the representative aspects of Japanese Culture. However Ikebana arranging skill has been passed down as an oral tradition from master to disciple, rather than in a systematic educational system. This research examines the words used by a teacher with regard to ikebana arrangements created by a beginner and an experienced arranger, examines what parts of the arrangements are focused on and evaluated, and looks at the points ikebana teacher pay attention to in correcting arrangements. It is possible that clarifying the criteria for evaluation and correction of arrangements will contribute to establishing a logical and scientific method of teaching ikebana in the future. With respect to the arrangement created by a beginner, there were many comments about the "tai" portion rather than evaluation of the overall form of the arrangement. So "tai" is supposed to be a difficult part of Ikebana arrangement for beginner. Regarding the arrangement created by the experienced arranger, it is possible that overall balance of the arrangement made the viewer have a positive impression of the whole work. However, a few positive comments were also made about the overall arrangement created by the beginner. Although the beginner's arrangement was not as accomplished as the work by an experienced arranger, it appears that viewers don't always look negatively at an arrangement created by a beginner. Next concerning correction of the arrangement, Comments for correction of Ikebana arrangement occurred both for beginner and for experienced arranger, though experienced arrangers followed the standard method. These results indicate that comments made during the correction of an arrangement can be categorized into two types: "comments made because of discrepancy with the one standard arranging method," and "comments made because of disagreement with the aesthetics of the viewer." Verification of custom-made implants manufactured using the additive manufacturing technologies is the key task to be fulfilled prior to the clinical application of an implant. It consists of parameters verification within individual steps, from a software design, through manufacturing, surface finishing, up to finalisation of a medical product. The use of additive technologies facilitates the manufacture of custom-made implants for human body parts which are not mechanically loaded (e.g. cranial implant), as well as replacement of joints, or bones, which are mechanically loaded during common everyday activities. The article presents possible uses of a plastic 3D printing and the computed tomography (Metrotom 1500, Carl Zeiss, Germany) for the verification of selected parameters of static customised implants manufactured using the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology with the EOSINT M280 equipment (EOS GmbH, Germany) from the biocompatible titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5).

This paper reports on a new methodology to analyze the impact of a distribution of autonomy and authority within a concept of operation. Unlike human-In-The-Loop methods, this computational methodology uses the Work Models that Compute framework to simulate the concept of operation in the very early design phases. The two key metrics assess the trace of all actions that each agent needs to perform, as well as all the information that needs to be exchanged. To demonstrate in a five aircraft scenario, the lead aircraft performs an Optimal Profile Descent arrival. Every following aircraft is tasked with maintaining an interval of 60 seconds behind the aircraft immediately in front of it. Unlike current day operations, where the air traffic controller is responsible for ensuring spacing, this authority was given to the pilots. The simulation provides a time trace of the actions performed by every pilot and the information exchanges within lead aircraft and in-trail aircraft pilot pairs. In this case, this method quickly identified how the information requirement increases in frequency further back in the aircraft sequence.

human communication is fundamental to all aspects of life. Nowadays, communication technologies and communication networks together offer a wide range of options to sustain human social interactions within the modern society. Unfortunately, people with complex communication needs are unable to communicate using verbal means such as speech and written texts; and have been excluded from active and convenient participation in the society. Over the past decades, a number of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems have been developed to provide various methods to enable people with communication impairments to express their beliefs and needs by means other than natural speech. The advent of mobile technologies further brought about a growing number of unconnected, offline mobile AAC apps. The current work assembles multidisciplinary research expertise in Information engineering, Cognitive Psychology, and Learning Sciences; as well as frontier experiences and practical knowledge in humanitarian technologies and specific learning disability; and proposes the novel cloud AAC to echo the call from the disability community for digital inclusion and their daily communication needs. The design has been validated by a preliminary system implementation; and has been adopted in classroom teaching and learning for children with autism spectrum disorders.

As building information modeling (BIM) gains appreciation in the industry, its promise to transform the traditional building design and construction process is being recognized. Building information modeling offers the promise of a common information repository for all project participants. In order to fully utilize the technology in the construction industry, this paper identified a need for developing a new educational approach in increasing productivity and collaboration in the Architectural, engineering, Construction and Facilities Management (A/E/C & FM) industry. With BIM as a digital representation of information developed and associated with all the building components, this paper describes how to utilize the data stored in a BIM with an example of energy analysis and modeling and illustrates how to utilize the information stored in BIM.

There are pedagogical shifts in learning where self-educated are being encouraged to be active in their own learning. Educational research increasingly recognizes the fact that a significant amount of learning is happening in the informal settings. Furthermore, due to the proliferation of varieties of products, consumers need to be educated with relevant information of the products in the informal settings. Cultural background, health reasons and religious inclinations are considered influencing factors to the decision on whether to consume or not. As such, relevant information such as ingredients of the food products may provide strong inclination on the decision to purchase. Thus, consumers may benefit from mobile learning in informal setting (e.g., scanning codes to obtain further information of the ingredient of the product). Thus, the main objective of this study is to design Halal-Checker Mobile Application by using agile user centered design. Agile user centered design is the integration of User-Centered design and agile methods. The human Computer Interaction (HCI) technique and agile approach adapted are Contextual design Model, User Personas and extreme programming. The results shown in this study are, (i) contextual design model and user personas and (ii) development of Halal-checker mobile application prototype using extreme programming. Future work may involve including more HCI techniques and agile approaches together in the agile user centered design methodology to improve the quality of the digital mobile artifacts.

The designing the Future (DTF) project targets the 9th and 10th grade STEM teachers and is focused on curriculum development through project based inquiry using design and modeling tools. The content focus of this project is Math, Science, and CTE (Career and Technical Education) concepts of engineering, 3D modeling, design, programming, simulation, and additive manufacturing (AM). The content is aligned with the Math, Science, and CTE standards for 9th and 10th grades including the embedded student performance standards for engineering and technology. Additionally, STEM Academy(C) standards are covered during the professional development (PD) workshops. engineering and education faculty members co-teach the content modules in order to solidify the content knowledge sets while they increase the comprehension and engagement of the teachers. A number of the state-of-the-art teaching with technology concepts are an essential part of this project as such AM, remotely accessible rapid prototyping laboratory, computer-aided design, and simulation. These tools, along with pedagogical best practices in secondary education, are modeled for teacher-participants through case studies paired with problem-based learning and project-based inquiry. The teachers work together on cross-curricular teams to engage each other in the hands-on projects, then design units they can take back to their own classrooms while aligning lessons to both state standards and the STEM Academy(C) standards of 3D modeling. Throughout the PD activities, all steps of the design process are captured electronically through *** to create digital instructional materials that secondary teachers may incorporate into their classroom lessons. Project evaluation and analysis includes both qualitative and quantitative data elements. Microcontrollers have become a mainstay of mechatronics laboratories. For example, the Arduino boards, and shields, are low cost flexible hardware that can provide substantial capabilities. At Grand Valley State University all engineering students learn to program microcontrollers using Atmel ATMega processors, the same processors used on the Arduino boards. In the mechatronics course, EGR 345 - Dynamic System modeling and Control, the students use Parallax Propeller based hardware. The alternate, Parallax Propeller, hardware platform broadens the students' knowledge and gives them access to a multiprocessing environment. The paper objectively outlines the hardware/software platform and how it can be used in a mechatronics course for Manufacturing engineering students. The supported topics include data collection, feedback control, various sensors, networking, and human interfaces. Educational activities include laboratory work and small projects.
